Roundup Time
Despite your specific flavor of the football colours, you had something interesting going on this past week/weekend. Let’s get caught up with things that probably don't matter:
One thing that may or may not matter, but worth mentioning anyhow is some big ups to the Newcastle Jets of the Australian A League. I try and catch the Grand Final every year, since it’s the only A League game broadcast in the States and they've only had three of them so far. However, I found myself fascinated with the intensity of the Grand Final and came up with this formula to help explain the A League to outsiders:
1 part MLS (talent) + 2 parts ex-Pat Support (crowd noise and attendance) + 1 part Australian Rule Football/Six Nations Rugby (off the ball knocks) = Australian A League.
The game didn’t match the 5 or 6-0 drubbing last year, where Archie Thompson netted four goals in the biggest game of the year. I don’t care what league or place you’re playing, but four goals is knocking on the door of a golden shower and that’s why we watch the game (I realize that statement may need some more explaining, but I’m going to let your imagination run wild for the moment).
One bit of news that came out of the game was a clear hand ball in the box in the 92’ minute that should have netted the opposition Central Coast Mariners a penalty kick, but ended up netting their goalkeeper a 15 month ban for hitting the referee Mark Shields after missing the call, congrats to Danny Vukovic for crossing the line we’ve all wanted to go with Mark Clattenburg for a long time.
Moving continents…
Spain...looks like Real wasn’t as locked as thought in La Liga after blowing a home match to mid-table club Getafe, 1-0 and everyone’s favorite Dutchman wondering how he can get back on the DL.
Compounding Real’s issue is the fact that Barca now look like the Alpha dog in not only Spain, but the rest of Europe after getting a 3-2 result at Celtic and handing bottom of the table Levante a 5-1 mercy rule loss.
Italy…a few minor notes after a mixed review for the Italian clubs in the Champions League…
*Roma is getting closer to Inter (9pts w/ 14 games left) with a nice 1-0 home decision versus 5th place side Fiorentian (a game currently being shown delayed in the Lodge)
*This also marks the point of the season where AC Milan have re-entered the top 4 and make their San Antonio Spurs type run to the top of Champions League playing some of the most unattractive brand of Football out their, so kudos to them for making the beautiful game look like U-12 All Star game.
Germany…
England...Today’s pic of the day describes the big news that Spurs has finally achieved at winning something and with current form look to challenge to become a new member of the big four. I’d like to thank Lodge favorite, the G&D, for providing a good atmosphere last night for a 12 hour delayed game, big ups.
*Question of the week—where does this put Chelsea who are still playing for the other three trophies? A) 3 for 4 B) 2 for 4 C) 1 for 4 D) 0 for 4, please text in your answer.
Even quicker roundup:
*
Kevin Keegan’s back line is really, really bad, no I mean, really, really f’n bad
*Martin Taylor’s not a big fan of Brazilian born Croats playing for an English Team, seriously though, I did see on the Sky this morning that Taylor has only received 8 (2 red, 6 yellow) bookings in 240 matches, which is un f’n believable for any premier player. The Lodge’s thoughts are with young Eduardo da Silva and his out in the first round of Euro ’08 Croatian national teammates.
*El Nino is a good player when not on the bench
*Let's see if Dave from Seattle's Everton can get some points today to secure themselves back in the fourth place and give Timmy Howard an opportunity to get back to Europe's big stage
Relegation watch:
Derby 9…Fulham 19…Reading 22.............Newcastle 28
Be Champions...

Where do we start? For one thing, it was nice of Chelsea to at least start giving some effort in the last 15 min of extra time. That’s all you could do? Play 15 min of football? You were out hustled, out played, out coached, out classed. Pretty much out’ed in all aspects of football, you showed everyone one exactly who we thought you were. A boring football team full of individual players.
Grant starts a 4-3-3 with Anelka as a winger? Wha? “ I played him on the wing because of his creativity” said Grant. Here’s a clue… You have Joe Cole who’s job is to be creative. Maybe you should start him and play a 4-4-2 with Drogs and Anelka up top? Anelka’s job is to score friggin’ goals. Hey, you’re the boss. Bring Cole on during extra time, that worked out great. Hey, why not bring on Ballack ( your best player over the last month) on in the 88th min.
Don’t even get me started with the Ballack v Lamps debate. I’ll take the Hun every time.
Grant you’re crap, Lamps you’re crap too. Terry you’re slow and your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash…. I done with you three. I’m almost done with Chelsea…. Be happy I wasn't at the G&D.
PS – keep up the good work on the Monday recaps…
Joe, when can we expect your Oscar party wrap up post?
that's the most passionate comment I've ever seen from you Train...and I like it...
I knew once I saw the starting lineup that Grant had just signed his own termination papers...JT and Lamps are not the f'n managers and both of them might have just signed their own termination papers for the national team...
I'm not sure where this adversion to the 4 4 2 comes from...but if you want to your 5 best midfielders then keep Nic Anelka on the bench...Chelsea has the pieces, but you have to stop having players select themselves into the starting lineup...
I'm curious to see what the fallout is after this game and if Grant can keep the dressing room...Vegas currently has that line at 7 to 4 against it...stay tuned...
Grant’s not getting canned until he goes 0-4, Roman will bring in some big name manager who will win a lot, then get canned for speaking his mind… It’s a cycle. A sad, sad cycle.
I really want to get rid of Lampard. I believe Terry will stay because A) he has a contract B) We will loose Ricky C. This will force us to keep him and play with Alex. Though if the new Serb kid is quality like they keep saying, we won’t need Terry for much longer.
Subject change...
Martin Taylor might be better suited for the A league.
Eduardo should be happy he's got a broken leg. Not only does this keep him out of the EURO's but more importantly it might just keep him out of the next Balkan Civil War.
I didn't see the Carling Cup Final and thus don't have any comments, but I watched the highlights and the fact there were no Chelsea shots as highlights echoes Train's thoughts on the lack of creativity on the front line with Grants unique formation. Although, I love seeing Train fired up like this. Mentioning keep up the good work to Jimbo is shortsighted since I wrote the first Monday Morning Recap, but I digress...
Jimbo, what's with "the sound of Liverpool being knocked out of the top four" in the header today? With Saturday's win thanks to Torres hat trick moving him into the next level of strikers, Liverpool moved 'into' the top four again, not 'out' of it. Although, within minutes Everton will take it back. But keep in mind L'pool have a game in hand.
After last week's showing against Inter in the Champions League - coupled with Saturday's win, I'm feeling good about the Reds chances of finishing in the top four. More confident than the winless January - that's for sure.
Taylor's tackle was poor. He obviously went in with his spikes up, but the ripping he's receiving in the press is unjustified. Hard tackles happen all of the time in football and Eduardo's leg couldn't take it. Horribly tough break. But lay off Taylor.
The tackle was clumsy more than hard, but I get what you're saying about Taylor...and that "game in hand" is huge now that Chelsea, West Ham and Spurs have one too...don't be mesmorized by a temporary spike in form...two wins on the cuff is not enough to sell me that they won't be prominent contributers to the UEFA Cup next year
but then...I digress...
Calm down Joe.... I didn't give the all the props to Jimbo for the monday recap.
I noted:
'PS – keep up the good work on the Monday recaps…'
I didn't say
PS-Jimbo your are totally rad and your recaps blow 2.0's out of the water. 2.0 should hang it up, he's done, he's finished.
Just to clarify:
Jimbo and 2.0 keep up with the Monday recaps. I'm loving them.
Joe, will that stop the tears?
Thanks, Train.
Where is Shawn in all of this? Did he cry himself to sleep on his huge pillow after the Eduardo break?
it doesn't sound like the Federal Jury he's on allows him time to comment on:
"The Most awesomely rad 2.0/Jimbo Monday Recap/Roundup of all things Footy"
Hell yeah...how about that soccer game where that bloke kicked the ball into the goal...and then ran around...and then they kicked it around until the clock expired...and then....hey that was "Pants"....um....yeah. So when is the NFL Draft?...I got nuthin'....I ended up watching the Combine on NFL Network...I was just feeling left out.....Ummm...yeah....how bout that Franchise tag on Trufant? That was "Pants" too?
Goose, sounds like you're in postpartum depression following the end of throwball season...it's ok...we have plently of room on the football bus...you're welcome anytime...and it's not too late...
but until that time comes...anyone impress you at the combine?
Howie Long Jr looked really good. Ran a 4.6 forty and his bench reps were solid. He may have vaulted past Glenn Dorsey of "The U" as the top DE in the draft.
What do you think of these rumors or Jerry Jones trying to get the #1 pick so he can take McFadden (Who also looked really good)
Are you willing to part with 4 draft picks and Marion Barber?
Isn't Dorsey from LSU?
I was curious to hear your thoughts about the combine also... when I was driving around on Saturday listening to ESPN Radio at the NFL Combine I just knew you were watching. Keep the updates coming!
Thats right..."Ken" Dorsey is from the U...I get those two mixed up....hahah
Wow...get selected for a Federal jury for a few days and look what pops up...? A post that has some actual smack talk that I would LOVE to particpate in....
Too bad nobody is going to read this since I'm the last one to comment and it's been 2 days....but will that stop me?
I'll keep things short:
Joe: Congratulations to your Scouse brotherhood for somehow maintaining the lead in the Barclays Premier Reserve League North. BIG ups. I hear that is some quality leatherware.
Train: I can't say too much bad about Chelsea...but your manager blows. He makes changes because he knows that a change is needed...but the changes he makes don't effect the flow/outcome of the match. All we need is a sexual harrassment suit from an assistant coach and he's the Isiah Thomas of the Premiership.
Jimbo: G&D late night replays are the way to go. For some reason I can take in many more pints at 7 pm than 7 am....hmmmm.
All of the above: Now about this Eduardo and Martin Taylor business...(and eff you 2.0...I don't know why exactly, it just feels good to say that...)
....Is Martin Taylor a dirty player? No. Especially after I heard that he had tried to see Eduardo at the hospital. Most players could (and WOULD) just blow it off and move on...but this guy was obviously distraught. Do I think he's getting a bad wrap in the press? FUCK NO. He was trying to set the tone for the match (3 mins in...) and came in a foot over the ball because he wasn't up to speed. Now, let's examine this for that final comment...."up to speed." First of all...Eduardo is never fast. Even when he's headed to the bathroom after a bad basket of fish 'n chips. Second, it's 3 minutes in...and the Gunners aren't even attacking....if you watch it in real time it almost looked like it was in slow motion...that's how bad it was. It was completely ridiculous. Do hard tackles happen in every match? Absolutely. But, regardless of how great this guy is...how nice he is....how many bookings he hasn't received....he came in A FOOT (12 inches) OVER THE BALL...with his spikes up....straight into #9's shin. Shitty...tragic...call it what you want...but don't defend the guy.
Maybe we should just run with this idea and develop the new attitude that high tackles occur everyday in The Lodge...and that's just the way it is. Usually, nothing bad happens....but there is that 1%...
So, get ready...because one of us is going to have his leg snapped in the next few months...it'll be "lucky number 100"..........Joe, when are you back in town?
I think any point I've made on Taylor was not about the tackle, but about the call for his lifetime ban from the game (suggested and then later retracted by Wegner)or a ban until the end of the season...
the problem with either one of those options is that they set a dangerous grey area for the FA to discipline in the future...
i.e. if Player A goes in as high as Taylor did on Player B, but Player A misses the leg, does the FA now have to give Player A the same 10-15 game ban as Taylor, even when nothing happened?
Somewhere in NW England Sir Alex is already calling a protest to rail against my suggestion...
Leave my Scouse brethren out of it. We are fine in 4th place. I'll be happy when ManU overtakes the Gunners in May.
Furthermore, I'll still defend my comments on the Taylor Tackle. If you would have played football growing up, you would know bones get broken in football plays. Twice I broke an opposing players bones on hard contact plays when playing soccer in High School as a Senior.
The first was a race for the ball, where I gained control of the ball and followed through my pass into the opponents shin. It broke. Those are the breaks of the game. Literally.
The second happened when there was a chip forward to me moving past the defense from my midfield position... the ball landed between me and the GK and he made the decision to try and beat me to the ball. I was the first to the ball and made a shot past him, again following through as he dove for the ball, this time hitting the GK in the collar bone and breaking it. Needless-to-say, the opposing team was out for my head the remainder of the game. But both were fair plays.
I think it's interesting to note that first of all....you are a HUGE dude Joe. Second, both of those plays you described weren't even similar to the situation....so it's apples and oranges. If it's a race to the ball and you are the one that "won" the ball...my money is definitely on the other guy getting screwed on that deal.
However, if you were approaching someone that already had possession of the ball and was heading towards your goal...and you lunged at his legs to try and take the ball away....and missed....and bones broke....then it would be similar.
Don't pull this "if you played football" crap either you f*cker. How frickin' belittling do you need to be? So I guess it's completely impossible to ever learn enough to be on level terms with the almighty Hollywood 2.0 then. I understand that with any contact sport there is a risk of injury...alright? But I'm done with this topic.
Perhaps you can set up some kind of presentation for me the next time you're up here and enlighten me on all of the facets of sports that I didn't play growing up.
Jeez.....screw you again.
I just re-read your comment and I thought that another one was necessary.
I played soccer from the age of 6 to 18... Do I have the ball field cred to make a comment? I just want to be sure...
the committee is still reviewing you comment eligibility Train...we'll get back to you later...
I don't actually possess any hard experience at being an ass either, so maybe Joe can teach us all a few things about that.
Just out of court...."not guilty" was the verdict....or "No" under copyright infringement....the riots have begun downtown by now I'm sure....
