Geek News You Can Use
It’s Baaaaack.
Finally, after what feels like forever “Lost” returns with 16 episodes in a row. Tonight’s episode is called “Not in Portland” and is going to follow Juliet in the flashbacks. The producers have promised that they’re going to start giving some attention to the rest of the cast real soon, but this episode still deals solely with Jack, Sawyer & Kate.
The Gunslinger Returns
Today is the release of one of the biggest comic book events of the last decade, and it doesn’t involve anyone in tights.
Stephen King is continuing his “Dark Tower” series in comic book form, beginning with a seven issue mini-series called “Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born”. If you’re not familiar with the Dark Tower, you should check the series out. It’s definitely not your stereotypical King work.
Well known writers trying their hands at comics is nothing new (Joss Whedon, Brad Meltzer, Kevin Smith, etc.) but to have someone at the level of Steven King, not to mention one of his most beloved series, is a first.
The art is done by a guy named Jae Lee, and what I’ve seen so far has simply been stunning.
Everybody can relax, I found the car. Needs some suspension work and shocks. Brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission, rear-end. Also new rings, mufflers, a little wiring....
If you’ve got $150,000 lying around, have I got the purchase for you! The infamous Ecto-1 is up for sale. It still runs, & all the lights and sirens still work too! How cool would this be to own?
Apparently Warner Brothers wants to go back to making crappy Superhero movies
So over the course of the last week to filmmakers have walked away from comic book properties they were attached to.
First Joss Whedon (You knew I couldn’t go without mentioning this guy) announced he was leaving Wonder Woman. In a letter Whedon stated, “We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work”.
And then literally the next day, David Goyer (writer of Batman Begins & Blade) announced that he was leaving the film version of “The Flash” for pretty much the same reasons.
Both films were being put out by Warner Bros, as they own DC comics and all of their properties, and this news just bums me out. The word on the street is that they want their comic book films to be lighter, more family friendly fare. Apparently they are still disappointed that “Superman Returns” did not do better business (it still crossed the $200 million mark domestically) and think that the serious tone had something to do with it.
To add insult to injury, a replacement for Goyer on “The Flash” has already been announced. Shawn Levy, the director of such masterpieces as “Night at the Museum”, “The Pink Panther” and “Cheaper by the Dozen” is going to pick up the reigns. Now there’s even word that Joel Schumacher (yes...THAT Joel Schumacher) is trying to get his hands on directing duty for the “Sandman” film.
Somebody may be pretty Frakked
Dunno if there are any Battlestar Galactica fans out there beside Train and I, but I’ve got a little bit of scoopage for the coming future.
Creator Ron Moore states that “after the March 4th episode airs, the name of a major cast member will disappear from the show’s opening credits.”

It’s a pretty cryptic statement. It’s not saying death, or even that they’re leaving the show. But whatever happens it’ll be big. The current rumor is that it will be Starbuck, which would just be a damn shame. Apparently she recently said in an interview that she finished her season 3 filming early, even though there are apparently a couple more episodes left to be filmed.
Galactica without Starbuck? I don’t even want to think about that....

If Devo would ever come out of his shell... I guarantee he'd go off about Battlestar Galactica and his obsession with the series.
I'm not totally surprised about the Whedon and Goyer dropping out news. Just watched This Film Is Not Yet Rated last week and let's just say it cemented my distaste towards all things corporate and belief that censorship is still alive. Great doc.
Coming from a man who works for Amazon...
This Film Is Not Yet Rated is a spectacular film!!! I actually got to meet the director at SIFF when they screened it. He's a very cool dude.
What I thought was really interesting was that he actually did not get permission to use any of the clips from the movies he showed. Instead he basically found a loophole in the whole copywrite system.
Basically, as long as he's using the clip to explain a point, it can be used...kind of like quoting another source in a book.
OK ..... Jae Lee is not just "some guy" that got found from his mom's basement. He's actually a pretty skilled visual artist that got hired out by Marvel as the youngest artist ever, because he was actually dope and schooled. No relation to the also cool godfather of image/x-men, Jae did something impossible by getting noticed for his work under Namor:the Submariner WTF?, well namor still sucks - but his art was super-untypical. a lot of his work is quite abstract, i used to have several of his illustrations on my wall during high school particularly when he moved over to image on wildc.a.t.s. unfortunately, his distorted abstract style seems to have toned down from this imagery i'm seeing, but Jae is dope.
As for Battlestar Galactica... well what can I say besides it being the best DRAMATIC show on television today. It will not be Starbuck because she holds a major role in finding Earth --- I would even speculate further that she is one of the final five cylons. Maybe that's too geeky for you guys but this is major geek dedication for casting on BSG.
Oh, I totally agree about Jae Lee. He's one of my favorite artists. His Inhumans run alone is a sight to behold.
As for BSG, I can guarantee that Starbuck is not a cylon. She is actually the only cast member who has it written into her contract that she is not a cylon.
I still have a bad feeling about her future on the show. The fact that she finished filming season 3, when the rest of the cast had 3 episodes to go is not a good sign....
About Jae Lee...I also didn't want to bother going into detail about the guy when no one besides myself, and now you would even know what I'm talking about.
Wouldn't that be a great twist for her to say that it's written in her contract though? Totally throwing the internets-using geek fanbase off on false tangents.
I'm bummed about Wheaton leaving the Wonder Woman movie. He was my only hope that it wasn't going to be one big inevitable disappointment. Now I fully expect them to get Michael Bay. Just blow a bunch of crap up and forget having an actual story line. Maybe if I'm really lucky they'll toss in Beyonce as WW so she can sing a couple of fightin' songs for the soundtrack. God, that's depressing.
