Monday Pitch Talk
AND WE'RE BACK! With both Chelsea and United winning their Champions League matches then subsequently falling to second rate clubs in England's FA Cup, the importance of the FA Cup has now reached a new low... regardless of SAF's tirade against the referees. Although it would be tragic because of the rich history of the Cup's, the FA should think about removing the Premier League from one of the competitions and letting the Championship and lower divisions battle it out for alleged glory.
In league play in England, we saw Arsenal draw against the much weaker Wigan... and Liverpool continue their improved form versus the seemingly regulation bound Newcastle side to regain fourth place. Torres is on fire, simply a force of nature. Moving on, a hiccuping Spurs club got over their Carling Cup hangover with a 4-0 Premier League thrashing of West Ham at White Hart Lane. Now we'll see if they can beat the Dutch side PSV in Eindhoven to continue on in the UEFA Cup.
I don't have any updates from Serie A, La Liga or the Bundesliga, since I didn't watch any non-Premiership matches over the weekend. As always, I recommend listening to the Guardian Unlimited's Sid in Spain to get the low down. Or Jimbo and his sidekick Train can chime in with an update from his viewings. Sorry, Train. But you're the sidekick... at least that's just the way I'm writing it.
Lastly, it was looking like half of the Gillet/Hicks ownership debacle at Anfield was going to come to an end with DIC in Dubia buying out Gillet for 49% of the holdings of L'pool. That, until today's news that Hicks is pulling out of the talks. Not good news for the Reds. The faster the better for those Texans to get out of the owners box as far as I'm concerned. After talking to a couple of new Facebook friends [that I randomly met playing poker on Facebook] from Liverpool about the team, they are convinced the two will eventually sell all of their shares. Apparently the papers over there are going crazy over the possibility.

Side Kick?... I can live with that. I’ve been called worse.
I have to disagree with your thoughts on the FA Cup. The beauty of the tourney is the upsets. After I got over the initial shock of watching my team lay another egg. I was happy for Barnsley and their fans. They were up for it and it showed. I’m actually excited for the final.
Why would you want to leave out the BPL teams? SAF wasn’t complaining about it when they won the treble. Now, that is not to say he had some things to be upset about this weekend. Though he needs to quit whining about getting protection for his top players i.e.: Ronaldo. I thought SAF’s nose was going to glow red after his tirade.
Leaving the top teams out of the FA Cup is crazy man, just crazy.
Arsenal is seeing the ghost of Eduado’s ankle. They keep giving the league away.
Kevin Keegan is dead in the water…
Relegation battle: Derby….Fulham…Bolton….. I’D LOVE IT…28 points
I didn’t catch all the games this weekend. Most of the top Italian teams were playing lesser opponents.
I guess Team Beckham is touring Asia. I saw they were playing the Hong Kong Union of tuna fisherman’s pub team. This was on instead of the review show. Train was none to happy about this.
I caught some of the Boca/ Independente match last night but fell asleep. This wasn’t due to the play just the fact I’m getting old and can’t stay up late.
I’m channeling FC Internazionale right now. I’m doing all I can for an upset of the scous.
Jimbo, what are you doing mingling with the enemy online? If you weren’t the Pooh-Bah this would be an automatic two day lodge ban.
Correction.... After re-reading your post and not trying to multi-task. I see what you mean about the FA/Carling cup removing the BPL teams. I think they should just get rid of the Carling cup all together.
I was just about to comment on that... that you didn't mention the Carling Cup. It's just too many competitions.
And yes, I'm glad you brought up the smaller clubs and upsets that inevitably happen during the competitions. Good point, Kato.
Train, Jimbo wasn't mingling. It was just us Scouse. Another wrong credit, no worries... carry on.
Booooo.
Are you poo-pooing your side, Shawn? What's going on over there at the Emirates?
Ummm....no my man...I do not poo poo my own side...and if every game was at the Emirates I think we would be in fine shape.
I remain confident about the Premiership...it just makes the big matches in April that much bigger. Pretty pumped about the CL as well.
I don't like the Schizo personality that they seem to be developing, but it's obvious that they are up for the big matches.
The Arsenal have also been exposed for being a much "smaller" side than any of the other "big 4" clubs. Health will be huge in the next 60 days....
For the record...I was poo poo-ing your club. You seem to only pop up when they have won a match or two, and without your Spanish Savior (Torres), the Scouse could be level with Newcastle. That guy has been a one man wrecking crew.
...and yes...that was a shout out from the '480' (N. Phoenix). booyah!
You wouldn't believe it either...there is an English pub here called "The George and Dragon", complete with top notch British eats and hours determined by that days matches....outstanding I say.
A post from the '480' is in order and it will be coming forthwith. (Well...maybe a little delay, but you get the point)
Cheers.
thanks for picking up the slack this week 2.0...I didn't have a whole lot since this is the 2nd time I've gotten up before 5am on a weekend only to see my team get upset at home...the constant with all of the poor results in the last month...Paul Scholes and Hargraves roaming the midfield...I believe the official tally is now one win in four games and that win being at Championship Side Fulham...
as far as the tirade goes, 2.0 is just jealous that my manager gives a shit about domestic hardware...I could tell things were going to be difficult when before the match SAF was in the officials face because of his inexperience...what happens 10 minutes later? yeah Slyvania Distan pulls his best Messier with Ronaldo in the box...who if it was anyone else would've received a PK...that's not a homer statement, that's a fact...
the bottom line...hats off to DJ, Sol and the rest of the Pompey back line...they played their ass off and copied the Man City formula of counter attacking off corners when they have to get pass the dangerous defensive combo of Rooney and Young Anderson...so that puts us as 9-0-2 in our last eleven FA cup matches...and oh yeah...they were all Premiership sides...
what I also love is that the 'Scouse are back on the hunt two days after the herd has already past..."welcome to the party pal..."...we're 90 minutes away from the opening kick at the San Siro and I'm pulling out all of my Nerazzurri gear...
short recap the rest of Europe...
*as Kato mentioned the big four in Italy all got a result while Fiorentina lost their local derby to Sienna, which now places them a point above AC for the final Champions league spot
*Spain, yes Sid Lowe is the "official" British word on all things Spanish Football, but the short recap: Messi is gone from Barca and so is all of their hardware hopes...6 pt lead for Real that might as well be 16
*France, game of the weekend possibility that I did no see, but Lyon took 4 goals to Bordeaux's 2 and took 6 pt lead on top of the Un Ligue
*Ze Fahzer Land, Bremen give up 6 goals to Stuggart and any hope of the league title as they go 7 points back of Bayern
*Ze Sistah Land, well I just went to check the scores and 3 matches from Sunday were postponed due to "police dispute" more on this later
Of other note in the northern plains...American midfielder Michael Bradley netted his 13th goal fo the season tying him for 3rd in the Eredivisie...well done young Bradley
that's all I got in the longest comment ever...
apparently it wasn't riot related, but the Dutch police are on strike and Juande Ramos is not happy about it...
