SPEED KILLS

8 am came early this Monday morning but it had begun, what you ask well a full slate of college football the holy grail of sports up until they moved the national championship game to what feels like 2 weeks after New Years day. I pushed aside my grumblings toward the BCS and sat back for a nice ride through a day that featured defense and a huge first, second and third helping of team speed. Did anyone see any Mountaineer games this year? I know I only saw one and never realized that they were any good. I thought ha, this is just the Big Least (east). I think I could coach a team to at least 8 wins in that conference. Georgia playing in a home game last night looked like they had gotten game film from WV maybe circa 1999 when it was Bulger to Becht and that was about it. Not since the days of Major Harris has the city of Morgantown had more to cheer about. Slaton and White where frickin’ amazing last night. I literally thought I was watching a video game. Somebody get me a coon skin cap and a musket. I just became a fan of the spread offense and the Mountaineers. They didn’t know what they were doing when they crashed the biggest home field advantage since The Nazi’s invaded Russia. This gives new meaning to the term slash and burn.

At least one team in the SEC plays D. The Crimson tide played a classic cotton bowl. Solid defense and one game winning field goal that looked like a three iron hit into the wind actually it looked like a Goose toe punch from fifty. This game was my game of the day but then again I have a soft spot for the Tide…….ROLL TIDE……… How can you not root for a team that had The Bear, a retarded kid named Forrest, Joe Nameth and Shaun Alexander? (We do not including the hiring of Mike “pole dance” Price). Bama made Tech look like they were using the Colorado offensive playbook with just about he same effectiveness. To bad that Alabama will be losing most of there team to Graduation and the NFL because they would be at least a preseason top 5 team.

Was there anyone in the lodge that thought the Irish would win the Fiesta? I mean I am a big Quinn fan.. no, dude not Dr. Quinn medicine woman, though I know you love the show. ND is just way to slow this year and there DB’s learned first hand how to not defend the deep pass. It was nice to see Teddy Ginn Jr. show up for a game considering he was a Heisman candidate to start the season.

Do you think a bottom of the pile conversation between AJ Hawk and Brady Quinn went something like this

BQ-“nice tackle, buddy.”

AJ –“ yeah, and just think your sister is going to get the same thing tonight, except from the blindside; we still on for dinner after the game with your family”

BQ - “yeah man see you at 8”

I watched bits and pieces of the other games on yesterday but they really didn’t do anything for me. I didn’t care that Barry Alvarez was retiring and moving to Florida where he and Wayne Fontino will be form the largest illegal gambling syndicate on the east coast. Is it just me or do they look like made men? Well they do to me. Wisconsin is going to be a legit Big Ten contender. Brian Calhoun will be sitting at the downtown athletic club next December.

Train, good calls on the games. It was nice watching them with you. That said, you failed to mention my epic comeback with the Florida State Seminoles, down 28-7 at the half, and winning 42-35 against PSU in a thriller. Just felt that needed to be mentioned.

Also, are we getting together to watch the Championship Game on Wednesday night? After talking to the Dude & Train, we each volunteer our places (although admittedly Dude or my place don't have HD-TV's). So let's decide on the venue and nail down the details. I get off work at 5PM and can get wherever by 6PM.

yes, i did fail to mention the Penn State Debacle. Which managed to be the #7 greatest game of all time. Maybe we should talk about the 35-0 Texas thumping I was giving the Trojans in the Rose Bowl, a game that you made me turn off in the second quarter. I figured we are even.

Anyone is welcome at my place for teh Granddaddy of the All....

So...a little recap from yesterday...Sat: Sat I decide to do some pressure washing outside and before I know it I have half my backyard dug up...anyway, none of that really matters except the fact that I wasn't able to catch the biggest (not best day) of college football all year...but, did I?

This year was the first year of DVR, and I must say that this is an amazing era for sports watching, a couple of things must apply:

1) being somewhere away from all media during the day and knowing you can avoid any media before you get to it
2) making sure everyone else knows that you don't know the outcome of the game and want to see it live(delayed)
3) making sure you know when you DVR a game that you also DVR the next program or next two programs following the game, because sporting events run over and the blue-balls of missing the last five minutes because you're dealing with a computer is unexcusable

Once again, what does this mean?--well it means this: I watched the Fiesta and Sugar, (forgot about the Cotton, sorry Train) in a combined three hours, and saw every Big 'Sis Quinn interview...and thought to myself, I wonder how long it'll be before Train mentions this in the Lodge? my answer sub-12 hours...

Game Thoughts on Fiesta:
*not seeing a single Ohio State game this year, didn't know what the really had...my answer: a lot of phenomenal athletes, but not a lot of heart, never really like OSU for some reason and yesterday didn't change my mind, (in fact the only time I've ever rooted for them was Fiesta '01 vs the U and that doesn't really count)
*Weiss showed that he still has a way to go to head coach in the big game, and I felt went about the gameplan completely wrong (in the first half)
a) pick your poison on D, first half got beat with the run and the pass...should've made OSU commit to the run, which still killed them in the end, but ND seemed to be defending the run a lot better than the pass...
b)don't leave your DB on an island, this strategy connects with a), keep the cover 2 strategy and make Smith beat you with accuracy not arm strength
c) when someone gives you a gift inside the 10 in the first half, don't be greedy...I know, Big Tuna would've done it, but you're still a long way from him no matter what percentage Tom Brady uses of his heart
d) ball control...ball control...by not controlling the ball and limiting the exposure of your Defense, you limited the strength of your football team
e) the three-step drop, I hate to sound like a poor-man's Gary Danielson here, but man, that didn't take a genius to figure out, it looked like lil' Tuna hadn't seen a blitzing D before...

anyway...was disapointed in the Indiana boys, but oh well, they'll be a preseason #5 and could make the BCS championship even with 5 losses next year

Sugar Bowl:
I can't remember the last time this bowl was interesting, I'd say it was Vick's Freshman year at Va Tech in the championship matchup with FSU, I really just DVR'd this game to see how long it would take UGA to take down WVU...but shortly after the first WVU TD I was in..."ok, so how long does it take UGA to dominate now? half-way through 2nd quarter?..."

well 28-0 later, I was sittin' with a smile as all the rich Atlanta suburbian UGA alum's wondered who these back-country hillbillies were?...great sub-text to this game with the difference in societies of the WV and Atlanta, the Big East and SEC and D vs. O...bottom line: loved the game, loved the WVU offense, R. Rodriguez brought it with the coaching job of the year...congrats and I'll be watching the geriatric bowl tonight...
