Looking ahead....

It still might be too early to even bring up the Hawks, but I like looking to the future…especially when I’m hopeful about it.

Anyway, I pulled the list of 2006 Seahawks Free Agents, and here’s how things are looking:

Jerheme Urban – WR
Jimmy Williams – CB
Joe Jurevicius – WR
Joe Tafoya – DE
John Howell – S
Josh Brown – PK
Kevin Bentley – LB
Kevin House – CB
Mack Strong – FB
Marquand Manuel – S
Maurice Morris – RB
Peter Warrick – WR
Rocky Bernard – DT
Rodney Bailey – DE
Ryan Hannam – TE
Seneca Wallace – QB
Shaun Alexander – RB
Steve Hutchinson – OG
Tom Rouen – P
Wayne Hunter – OT

So, here’s my topic of discussion for the lodge:

Who are your top 3 (in order) priority re-signings?

Here’s my list:

1. Steve Hutchinson: Unlike Shaun, this is a guy who you pretty much give whatever he wants. He’s still young, and he’s only going to get better. This is exactly the kind of football player Ruskell looks for, and anyone else in his place could only be considered a down-grade.
2. Joe Jurevicius: This is a guy you can always count on, and a 2006 Hawk team without Joe isn’t one I’d want to know. Apparently Bill Belichick has let the Patriots GM know that he wants Joe in New England next year, which worries me, although I’m confident we can make a re-signing happen.
3. Mack Strong: Whoever we sign as a running back after Shaun leaves is going to be chomping at the big to have a guy like Mack Strong at his side. I really don’t see him going to any other team.

As for Shaun, I don’t think he’s going to be worth the contract he wants. He’s entering his 30’s which means the numbers are going to drop and the guy doesn’t play the defense that is needed from him. If he could block the way guys like Brian Westbrook and even Maurice Morris do than he might be worth resigning for mucho money. Besides, there are a lot of good running backs that are going to free agents this year, and I think any above average running back would excel in the Seahawks system.

1. OL Steve Hutchinson: You sign your All-Pro's, especially when they are on your O-Line. So Steve is priority #1. I have a feeling they could franchise him though.

2. RB Shaun Alexander: Say all you want about him not being worth the money he's asking for. He's still a RB. And my #2 priority is signing a RB, whether it's Shaun or not. I'd rather sign the Edge to run for the Hawks, to be honest. He's a better pass catcher out of the backfield, and he's a better blocker.

3. DT Rocky Bernard: You need the biggies on the DL. They did well the entire season and Rocky was a big part of that. Sign him.

I agree about Rocky. He's probably #4 on my list.

I also agree about the Running Back situation. It should be their #2 priority (Behind Hutch). I just don't like the idea of a long term Shaun Alexander contract.

No, I've said it all year... unless the Hawks won the SB, I don't think Alexander will be back with the Hawks next year.

For those who haven't heard Holmgren's comments. Here they are, courtesy of the Seattle Times.

Here is my opinion on several of the key free agents

Joe Jurevicius – WR
I'd like him resigned because he is a solid WR. However we lack speed at the WR position. We need a guy whp can strech the defense. We need a Koren Robinson without the Koren Robinson.

Josh Brown – PK
Solid Kicker. We should resign his as our #4 priority

Mack Strong – FB
I think he will give a hometown discount to play one last year and make another run before retiring.

Marquand Manuel – S
I think the lack of depth at Safety was GLARING in the superbowl. He is your #3 priority

Maurice Morris – RB
I could see Mo going. Especially if they resign Shaun. He may end up in Arizona or Minn.

Peter Warrick – WR
Wont be resigned. Brought nothing to the offense

Rocky Bernard – DT
He wont be resigned. Someone will over him about 4 mill a year.

Ryan Hannam – TE
Good Blocker who knows the system without a huge price tag. He will be resigned

Seneca Wallace – QB
He is a solid bargain as a #2. Unless you can get a Dilfer or a proven Vet at the league minimum.

Shaun Alexander – RB
#1 Priority. Here is why. If you sign him you can use the Franchise tag on Hutch. That way you can most likely get both signed. With the new CBA looming in 2007, this would be the best move. Sign Shaun. Francise hutch with a 1 year tender and work a long term deal.

Steve Hutchinson – OG
#2 Priority. See above. He is All Pro at a premium position. Lock him up and let him and walt retire as Hawks

The problem with Franchising Hutch is that he wouldn't get paid in the top 5 for his position, he would get paid for the top 5 of offensive linemen, which means he'd be getting Walter Jones money.
That's why no team ever puts the tag on that position, you end up overpaying.

He'll get top5 Offensive Guard money. They dont dump them all into offensive lineman.

Its like RB/FB CB/S Centers Guards and Tackles are seperate under the Franchise ruling

I could easily be wrong. I'm just going off of what David Locke said the night of the game, I'm far from an expert.

Neither is Locke.

Neither am I. I could be wrong. I was trying to find the actual rules of Free agency on the net. Not such luck

I think Hutch is #1 and the RB position is #2, whether it's Alexander or someone else. I think Brown should be in your top 5 resigns and Joe Jar is a resign if you make him your fourth receiver. He is money when it comes to catching. See if the Hawks might get a receiver somewhere later in the draft. Although with their record, a quality first pick will be difficult.

I think Senaca Wallace is an important resign too. The guy has progressed and knows the offense. Another veteran may not pick on up things so fast.

Bringing up Seneca Wallace reminds me that we need another steady backup QB. Think about the fact that if they would have brought Seneca out as a receiver again, like they did in the NFC Championship game.....and he gets hurt. All of a sudden David Green is our backup? .....nothing kills this team faster than an injury to Hasselbeck.
