Luc Besson's New Film(s)

It’s been nearly 7 years since we’ve seen Luc Besson direct a film, and quite frankly “the Messenger” left me wanting, which means it’s been more like 9 years since he’s directed a film I loved.
Well, it looks like this year we’re getting a double shot of Besson. First “Angel-A”, a black and white French surrealist art film (which means I’ll probably never mention it again at the lodge). The other film just looks odd.
It’s a CG animated film called Arthur and the Minimoys. It’s a fantasy piece (if you couldn’t tell from the picture) that’s set to make its premiere at the Cannes film festival. As intrigued as I am by the film, I have to admit I didn’t see a project like this coming (of course, I’m still waiting for the day when he finally decides to do the sequel to “Leon” he mentions every once in a blue moon). The voice cast looks pretty wild, with the likes of Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland), David Bowie, Snoop Dogg and Madonna.
Besson has always been one of those filmmaker who I make a point to never miss one of their films. “Leon” still stands as one of my all time favorite films, and I love “La Femme Nikita”, “Big Blue” and the “5th Element”. However, when it comes to films he just writes, and doesn’t direct his filmography gets a little sketchy. For every “Unleashed” you seem to get a “Transporter 2” or “Kiss of the Dragon”. It does seem that he only directs the scripts he really feels passion for, so I’m still optimistic about both of these films.

I'm much more excited about Angel-A than the CG flick. I beat Zelda when I was in Junior High.

Have a little bit of Faith.

The early production artwork of the fifth element looked uber-freaky, but it ended up being pretty interesting.

5th E was so close to a classic, but poor casting ended up costing it the gold...replace Willis w/ an actual actor and subtract Chris Tucker's character all together and you have something...
