Maybe Jack's up for it again?
Thanks to the most critical website on the Internets, for a good Tuesday morning discussion on potential Jokers for Batman Begins the Prequel-Sequel...the report from the reputable moviehole.net suggests Hugo and Hugh for roles as Joker and Harvey Two-Face...I'm fairly certain there is absolutely no creedence what-so-ever to this rumor, and since the film probably isn't going to be released until late '07 and probably '08...its a good time to get to the forecasting:
So here I go, and based on N0lan's excellent casting decision of Prequel #1 I trust that he won't review any of our hack-tacular suggestions (or moviehole.net's for that matter):
#1 on my board and much rumored via the Internets: a personal Lodge favorite and subject of this EW interview a couple of years back:
"I've been making a trilogy of films, producing and directing...''What Is It?'' has a cast mostly made up of people with Down's syndrome, but it's really about a young man whose principal interests are salt, snails, a pipe, and how to get home. The next film, ''EVERYTHING IS FINE!,'' which I made using my money from ''Charlie's Angels,'' was written by a man who has cerebral palsy....I really feel that they could be bigger than the Star Wars Trilogy(author's note: that he states this with complete seriousness)" ladies and Gentlemen:
Crispin Glover-McFly:

In fact the more I think of this casting decision and the direction that Nolan is taking this series, I think the possibility of merely casting Glover and not writing a script for him, just sections where he's present in character seems like the best thing to do. Very rarely has Hollywood produced an actor that is talented AND borderline schitzofrentic....I say exploit this opportunity and make the world forget about Jack and Cesar Romero, but then again what the hell do I know?
21 Comments:
I think Crispin would be an inspired choice for the Joker. Originally every one was citing him and Liev Schrieber (as Two-Face) to be the bad guys in Batman Begins 2.
I actually don't think Crispin really has a chance for one major reason.
Crispin Glover has a reputation for being extremely difficult to work with (Which is the only reason he was dropped in Back to the Future 2).
Chris Nolan, on the other hand, has a reputation for being someone who considers the director-actor relationship to be paramount. He's not going to waste his time with an actor who he's going to have to butt heads with on a daily basis. He's very big on making sure everyone on a production has the same vision (he usually will show his crews other films to guide them. For instance, for Batman Begins he had the crew study "Blade Runner"). Crispin isn't known for being the kind of actor that will play along with that.
The Hugh Jackman rumor, I'm pretty sure is just because Bale and Nolan are currently working on a film with Jackman called "The Prestige" in Australia.
I'm sure whoever they get it'll be great. The casting in Batman Begins was amazing (except for Katie Holmes), but I've heard so many names thrown around my head is spinning
MCP that's why we have you around...to dis-spell ridiculous rumor's and speculations, oh and for someone to spar with 2.0...
all that aside, I think the friction between Nolan and Glover could result in great on-screen preformances...(this is one of the ultimate bad guys)...I'm not going to hold my breath, because of all the reasons you listed, which to anyone that follows films isn't exactly a new occurrance, but I'm going to be skeptical if its Hugo(quickly turning into Alan Rickman 2.0) or anyother relative big name...
I don't want to see this series go the way of the Burton series and become bogged down with too many named actors going way over the top...
That's what I have always dug about Nolan's casting. He can attract big names who are also actors. When you're getting the likes of Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman for what are really bit parts (do either of them have more than 10-15 minutes of screen time?).
That's one of the things that frustrated me about the Burton/Schumacher era: They basically got the biggest name they possibly could, even if it wasn't a good fit (Schwarzenegger, and in my unpopular opinion Nicholson).
I actually think Weaving wouldn't be a bad choice for Nolan's Joker. He's said quite a few times that he's looking to make the Joker a much more sadistic and violent character, citing a book called the Killing Joke.
>Sidebar< "The Killing Joke" is an Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, From Hell) Batman comic that is pretty wildely considered the best Joker story ever. He cripples bat girl and tortures the hell out of commisioner Gordon. It's actually a great read, and I would highly reccomend it even to a non-comic reading audience<
I also don't think that Nolan's series is going to get bogged down because he seems so much more focused on the Bruce Wayne/Batman character than on the villians. The last four bat films really are more about the villians than they are about Batman. It's almost like he's not the main character. Chris Nolan and writer David Goyer really seem out to explore the main character than to spend most of their time with a big named actor pretending to be uber-evil.
good comments MCP...and I'd like to take a look at Killing Joke...I'll make an exchange for the 1st two discs of Firefly...because I can never get enough torture...
"Listen kid, I'm not gonna bullshit you, all right? I don't give a good fuck what you know, or don't know, but I'm gonna torture you anyway, regardless. Not to get information. It's amusing, to me, to torture a cop. You can say anything you want cause I've heard it all before. All you can do is pray for a quick death, which you ain't gonna get."
oh and I'm not taking anything away from Weaving...I think he's an excellent actor (thanks for the Interview recommendation)...and I think he could do it, but to me Glover was born to play the role, and he won't because of other factors...also I'm upset that Cillian Murphy was already used...
Nice inside info on the "Blade Runner" viewing about Nolan, TP. Weaving & Glover are a little too serious for my tastes. Don't get me wrong, I think the Joker should definitely have a dark side and Nolan brought out the best of the "Dark Knight" angle of the Batman characters.
That being said, if the rumors are true, the Jackman casting would get me the most excited. He has the knack for comedy, but also has the edge (see Wolverine in the X-Men series).
Joe, why don't we just get Julian McMahon to play the Joker. He would be just as good as Jackman.
I don't think Jackman has the goods to pull off a Joker role in this current style of film. I want someone who is borderline not someone who was in a movie with Ashley Judd.
Judd was hot in that movie. And, for the record, I saw it on a plane. McMahon would work also, and I do agree that a newcomer would be ultimately the best case scenario.
Were there Snakes on the Plane also?
I believe Joe would think anyone would be good for the role.
Oh, And I do like the possible casting of Liev Schriber as a young Harvey Dent.
Train...you stole my thunder on the Jackman comment...although I do think he does a good job in Logan in the Xpeople...and I am stoked about the announcement of a Wolverine movie...
I think ultimately the audience would have a hard time with an actor changing comic book character's on screen...especially two of the most prolific and fan-loved ever...
I don't know why, they just would
Actually...Jackman would be Harvey Dent (and would become Two Face in part 3) and Hugo Weaving would be the Joker.
I think a serious actor is exactly what a role like the joker really needs. You can throw someone like Jim Carrey in the role, but he'll probably just come off as over the top. A proper Joker has to scare you the way that clowns scare children. He will kill you because he can, and he'll do it in such a violent way that he'll be the only one that's going to think it's funny.
Speaking of Crispin Glover. If you want to watch an older, dark movie. Check out the Rivers Edge.

Yes I know it is a Keanu reeves movie and yes there are parts of the film where Keanu's acting will make you want to shove a 6 inch model of the Empire state building up your nose up to the 95th floor until the radio antenna sticks out and you look like the fake unicorn from the Barnum and Baily circus. But it actually a pretty good movie.
plus it has
a) Dennis Hopper
b) A young hot Ione Skye
Plot Outline: A high school slacker kills his girlfriend and shows off her dead body to their friends.
**Bonus**
I'll buy a beer (or Zima for Joe) for the 1st person to post where the Empire State comment from above came from. (Be exact)
Hmmm, Jackman as Dent isn't bad either. I am just going from visuals from the Long Halloween and Loeb/Sale version of Dent look very much like Schriber but Jackman in a role like that is more believable then The Joker. You hit the nail about the Joker scaring kids I mean I friggin hate clowns ever since I saw Poltergeist.
Man the two scariest clons ever were the friggin Poltergiest Clown and the freakiest of all
Pennywise the Clown. From Steven Kings IT. Played by Tim Curry. Scary ass clown. (Insert Ass Clown jokes here)
I once cried for my entire birthday party because of Ronald McDonald...true story...needless to say McDonald's told me not come back this year...
Good call on the IT clown from Steven King. Scariest clown, hands down.
They all float down here. And when you're down here, you'll float too....
Some good recommendations...I think Crispin would be a great choice...The guy plays Joker in the Charlie's Angels movies but doen't have speakin' parts. Tim Curry would also be a great choice. Someone that has that Joker laugh somewhere and he has donned the clown make-up.
How about Sid Haig (AKA Captain Spalding) from Devil's Reject and House of 1000 corpes
If not for the Joker...what about a possible character of Egg Head or Mister Freeze...to name a few nemesis of Batman...
I have to say, Nolan has gotten some names but they haven't wanted the big screen time that the Schumacher movies did.
I think James Cromwell might make a good Mister Freeze. Especially if Mr Freeze was an Irish gangster.
And I'd really like to see a cameo by Miss Harley Quinn if they're bringing back the Joker. I'm thinking Kristen Chenowith because I like her funny voice.
Wow. Jimmy.
Sharing that precious moment of childhood really made me feel for you. Next time that happens. You can come hide in my McQuade fort. We dont allow clowns in there. (Or Grimmaces, Hamburglers, or those freaky ass fry guys)
hate fry guys...
