Cheers to the Land of the Rising Sun
Anyone who knows me knows that I have some strange appreciation of the Japanese and there culture. Not saying that I know everything about the people and the lands but I do know who Iron Chef Chinese is.
I think I might be the only one the Lodge who really enjoyed the WBC. I’m not the biggest baseball fan per say but I am a huge fan of world competition. The Japanese team was vindicated last night after that horrible hose job given to them by team USA. If I remember correctly I said Oh would have the last word.
You could not have asked nor had a better championship game then the one you had last night. Such a dichotomy between two nations and fundamentals, on one had you have the Cubans who play with the Latin flavor. They are about power at the plate and an aggressive style only Fidel could love. With the Japanese you have precision and patience. Proving that the best comes to those who wait, extending pitch counts making pitchers over work and sweat out an inning. Every batter looking like an Ichiro clone, just call him the Jengo Fett of Japanese baseball. I just hope I see some of that fire and passion in the Safeco dugout that he displayed in the tournament.
I can’t leave out the fielding which like always was amazing on both sides. The Cubans have so much athleticism it makes you wonder what they could do against a real MLB team. Also make you sad to see there talents wallow in the Havana but who am I to be the judge cause I am sure those men are gods to there fans back home. The Cuban team were gracious in there defeat. They met the champs on the field to shake hands a true class gesture. Something that makes me think why can’t I get some Cuban cigars in this country. What is the problem? We have a cold war relic embargo on a nation that needs all the help it can get. Inevitable this rant would turn into a political debate. I question why is it that all Communist governments turn to dictatorships? Really I am just mad I can’t go to Cuba and I can’t get a box of Cohiba’s at the corner market. I digress, the game was great and I loved the whole concept and it gets me excited to watch 162 games of mediocrity here in Seattle.

I actually watched most of the game last night. What amazed me was the Relief Pitcher that threw Submarine style from the FRICKIN DIRT!!!
I have to say that once they got to the quarter than semi-finals, I started gaining interest...that and once the US team was outed, I felt it was safe to watch...all the teams in the Semi's impressed me...each brought something different to the plate...I was dissapointed by the all-star lineup of the Dominicans, but I thought it was great that the two teams that play great "team" baseball ended up 4 runs apart for the championship...
Kudos to the Japanese squad, doing it w/o Kenjhi and Godzilla, but great pitching, excellent D and contact-Ichi-style hitting that theDuke touched on...
I was just hoping that anyone other than the US squad win the title...much like Basketball...the world is learning the fundamentals of our games and perfecting them...I'll resist trying to sound like a Frank DeFord piece, but its sad that the US puts together All-Star teams for all World events, instead of trying to develop an actual "team" that is made to win instead of sell tickets...I suppose I should be glad that the rest of world doesn't care about Football American` and the US doesn't care about Futbol...even though it is the only US team that actually has a chance of winning on the global stage...
Here's to hoping that Cohiba's become legal and the WBC comes back sooner than 4 years...
The one thing that I enjoyed most about the WBC is that it reminded me of how much fans appreciate this game on a worldwide level, and how lame fans in the US are. You go to a baseball game here and you see people sitting quietly...talking on their cell phones.....and they practically get mad at you if you yell or cheer when everyone else is quiet. It's like you have to sit on your hands until something on the field happens that warrants a reaction....then it's OK to stand up and cheer.
This is NOT the case in the WBC. These fans are rabid...they cheer all the time. It's fantastic.
I'm thinking about bringing some pots and pans to bang together at Safeco this year......I think I need to do it just to see the reaction that I get.
It was a good game. I was able to catch the last 2 innings.
By the way... Iron Chef Chinese's name is Chen Kenichi, bitches. I love that show. Just found out a couple of facts... turns out that Iron Chef Kenichi won 73% of his battles.
.730 batting average ain't bad...CTown I'll bring the Cowbell and Whistles...and I'm serious...
Iron Chef Chinese is know for his use of Shezchuan cooking and ingredients and his kick a$* Wok
Count me in I will bring the Flags and face paint.
Side note -
We doing a lodge gathering for Thurs or Friday for the NCAA? I am looking to do both night. I am open for one night at my place...
Can this work? maybe even a SeaTown sighting?
I'm hosting the Dawg game on Friday...so open invites to everyone...maybe a little Rock Rolling afterwards...
Seatown has a final exam on Thursday night....but I would be up for getting together for the Huskies X 2 matchup.....
Sorry guys.
Thursday Goose turns 34 and will be spending some time with the family. The wife has plans for me on friday.
However.....
Starting on thurday I am on Vacation until the 30th so i will be open to a Thursday Poker Night at Casa Goose on the 30th?
I am in for a little mini Goose Birthday celebration... We have a nice stretch of Lodge B-days.
Thursday night I might be stranded around Greenlake to watch the game since Jenny will have the car for a board meeting she is required to attend (she's a workaholic... it's a disease).
And Friday night I'm in the same boat Goose is in... the wife has already made plans with my brother and his wife. David & I will be watching the game during said family gathering though, I guarantee you that!
I'm down for Thursday Poker Night at Casa Goose if I can arrange a ride or get the car from Jenny. I will make it work.
I really loved the WBC also. Its better than the Olympics. The dynamics of countries are more evident and it pits head to head better. I'm surprised Japan wiped Korea so raw this past weekend after they were doing so well. I guess when you get everybody mad enough they start going BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!
Joe let me introduce you to this:
http://transit.metrokc.gov/
it will help you locate a bus that can get you around town. Try it sometime.
Nice touch Train. I enjoyed the WBC. It showed how each culture embraces the game. I was happy to see Ichiro not eat his words. He said they would win and he was right.
Lodge gathering I'm down for Thursday and for the game Friday. I think we need to roll rocks after the game...Meghan has got some friends in town and I think it would be a great Lodge gathering...extending to P-town folk!
Wow....almost an ultimate mistake. I've got dinner plans with my future wife on Friday night to celebrate our 3 year anniversary......I'm out for the game and rock rolling....
How easily it slips my mind that the heart and soul of the Lodge shares my Bday week w/ me...happy 21st Goose...Ctown, you suck for blowing us off, but not as bad as blowing off your wife, here's to hoping you get the reverse of that statement on Friday (giggity)...Train, Dude...sounds like the boys are back again for Thurs/Fri...here's to Husky BBall and WS Lanes!!!
