About F'n Time!
Finally! Grover came to his senses and removed Eddie Guardado from the closer role today. Two weeks too late. Guardado hasn't been the same for 2 years, and two weeks ago Eddie gave up a walk-off homer to the RedSox's .200 hitting Mark Loretta. After that defeat, Guardado had some thinking to do.
"Even on the plane ride, you're playing cards, it's in your mind," Guardado said, explaining that he'll try to forget but then start cursing. "The guys say, 'You all right?' I said, 'Yeah, fine.' But it's back there. You learn to deal with it. It's not like it's going to haunt me, but it's in the back of your mind."
Anybody could see after Guardado's shaky first game of the year that he was done. Hargrove was loyal to him until today. Too bad the Mariners didn't listen to their doctors. My good buddy Aaron VanderLinden, who works with ex-Mariner team doctor Dr. Larry Pedegana, said that Pedegana advised the Mariners to not pick up Guardado's option before this season. Aaron said that Pedegana claimed that Guardado's shoulder was D-U-N done after his second rotator cuff surgery. Of course, the Mariners didn't listen to the good doctor's advice and picked up the option. And Pedegana is no longer the Mariners team doctor. Finally we usher in the Soriano regime.

Thursday must be, Everybody Post Day.
I'm sad to see Guardado struggle, like this, and I'm a little dissapointed at how Mariners have handled the situation.
I was hoping to see Grover throw Eddie into 9th inning situations where the game was in hand, but I don't think he ever once did that.
I'm excited to see Soriano get his shot though...I think he has the potential to become an explosive closer.
as much as I like Eddie's honest candor...I like to see the hometown nine winning ballgames, especially on the road, especially after coming back in the 8th inning...the only problem is the dual closer position that Grover is trying to use...Soriano is the guy, not Putz...
I think you have to see which guy will take the roll. See which one puts up the numbers at go from there. Perhaps it might be George Sherrill. Probably not though...
Eddie G was one of my absolute favorite athletes to cover. It was always fun to watch him gut through the ninth inning with that 89 mph fastball of his. The best Guardado story was when he tore his meniscus, an injury that keeps most pitchers out for months following surgery, and he comes back in 15 days. Just a solid guy who had a great career while overachieving with the gifts God gave him.
But December 2003 was the perfect time for the Twins to let him leave. He gutted it out for the M's for a couple of years, but Joe's right -- he's obviously done.
