Post 400!!!! Booya grandman. Booya.
This Saturday (May 6) is a very special day in the world of comic books. It’s the 5th annual “Free Comic Book Day”!!!!!
Free Comic Book Day is a really cool event, designed to get new people into comics. Every year all the major publishers put out an exclusive book to give away at comic stores. Sometimes it’s reprints of popular issues, other times it’s brand new material. This year’s offerings include….
X-Men/Runaways - Marvel couldn't not do an X-Men book this year (X3 comes out in just 3 weeks). But Marvel did something extra cool and they did a crossover with one of their best new titles, "Runaways".
"Runaways" is basically about a group of kids who find out their parents are super villians, and that they were being groomed to follow in their footsteps. "Runaways" is a book that easily makes my list of top 10 new titles in the last 10 years.
Chances are, this book alone will make "Free Comic Book Day" worth the trip to the comic store.
Over at DC comics, they're going with a repring of "Justice League Adventures" #1. This title is basically the comic book equivlent of the Jutice League cartoon that's shown on the Cartoon Network. Basically, this is a much more "All Ages" title than the normal JLA book.
Although I haven't read this title, these books are generally okay, particularily when they're free.
IDW Publishing is putting out an original Transformers comic. IDW's Transformers comics have been an enjoyable read solely for the nostalgia factor. The publisher has been really smart and stuck primarily with G1 characters (Which basically means Optimus, Star Scream, that whole crew)
Dark Horse Comics has made it a tradition to put out an original Star Wars book every year, and this year is no different. But they are mixing things up this year by making the book a flipbook. One half is an original Clone Troopers story, and they are also including a Conan book on the other side. Good stuff all around.
Image comics is doing something a little different this year. They are putting out a book containing 4 page previews of 8 of their titles including Spawn, Shadowhawk, Savage Dragon and Invincible.
Now...this isn't even half of the books that will be available on Saturday. There's also an Archie Book, a Simpsons Comic, GI Joe, A Tokyopop preview book, as well as 18 or so titles from smaller publishers (which aren't always available everywhere).
Anyway, this is a really great opportunity to pick up some free comics, maybe even check out your local comic book store (Click here to find the store nearest to you). I always encourage as many people as possible to check this out as it's a really unique opportunity to get exposed to comics. And hey, while your there maybe try and pick up a book or two.

So during lunch this friday I can either go Xanadu, or make it a real event and take the shuttle to Pike Place. For you Pemcoians, if you walk to Metro Park (the shiny buildings next to 24hr Fitness) you can get a free ride to downtown and back. I'm super hype on the Runaways X-over, dissappointed with the Image preview which is just their way to boost revenues. It seems to me thats against their original premise when Lee & Co split from Marvel. As for Darkhorse and DC, they seem to be consistent through time; Darkhorse nice & gritty, DC sux0rZ.
Just an FYI...it's actually Saturday, not Friday.
I'll be at my store for Free Comic Book Day, which is Corner Comics in Kenmore. They're having a sale in which they will beselling all back issues for only $1.
They did this last year, and I managed to score some serious gems (including a handful of Alan Moore & Neil Gaiman's Miracleman issues)
good looking out MCP...informing the Lodge about free stuff is the article 2.03 in the Lodge Bill of Rights, right after the section covering the best free porn sites
I've never been so happy not to have understood anything in my life about this comment exchange.
By the way, TP... where is the ComiCon post? It's been over a month!
the ComiCon post is MCP's Chinese Democracy
Like Joe....I have nothing to bring to this one, other than to say that I may have to stop in and pick up a free comic to see what this is all about.
Can a newbie get a recommendation?
I'm happy to see my draft pick back on the horse and churning out posts.
If you're gonna hit up free comic day I would recommend jamming with Darkhorse as an adult reader, X-men is always good to go, and if I haven't said so already V for Vendetta was way rawer in the graphic novel. Although its ugly by todays art standards it was still great and you can get it at Barnes & Noble without feeling dorky. If you are at BN, for something prettier, I highly recommend Superman: For Tomorrow by Jim Lee. Its more of an emotional take following a tragedy on earth where Lois Lane was lost along with millions of other people, and you see Superman trying to deal with it.
1 post is not churning. Its more like Tommy Tutone. Its a One-Hit-Wonder
Jaynee, Jaynee, who can I turn to?
You give me something I can hold on to.
I know you think I'm like the others before
Who saw your name and number on the wall
Jaynee, I got your number,
I need to make you mine.
Jaynee, don't change your number,
8-6-7-5-3-0-9 (8-6-7-5-3-0-9)
8-6-7-5-3-0-9 (8-6-7-5-3-0-9)
Reccomendation post is coming....
