Noodle Information - Israel/Lebanon
(This is a school post, but i figure the Lodge is dead right now anyways.)
I thought this was extremely interesting in terms of contrasting media material. This morning many papers had an Israeli attack against Lebanon featured. Not knowing what it was really about I began to read about it in a coffee shop and online. Considering being critical I decided to go to an Israeli site to compare what was being reported to the American public and the foreign domestic public. It really makes you consider what filters are on. Thankfully we have the internet to assess more information. Still you wanna ask the question: Who is most credible?
The Seattle Times article, where we're at, gives a flat account: Warplanes again smashed runways at Beirut's airport with hours of airstrikes, trying to render it unusable, and destroyed mountain bridges on the main highway to Syria. Warships blockaded Lebanon's ports for a second day.
Israel National news gives a strategic military account: IAF aircraft also struck other Hizbullah targets, including Hizbullah headquarters in a densely populated neighborhood in south Beiru, deep in the Lebanon Valley near the Syrian border, major roadways and other strategic locations. Fighter pilots focused their efforts particularly on the Beirut airport, repeatedly bombing the facility which serves as a transfer point for weapons to the terrorists.
And a World News article via beirutnews.com gives a more humane focused domestic version: Despite international calls for moderation, Israel continued its military offensive in Lebanon on Friday. As Israeli forces targeted infrastructure throughout the country including the Beirut-Damascus highway, Hezbollah militants fired rockets into civilian areas in Israel. In what appeared to be a further escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, Israeli forces bombed sensitive parts of Lebanon's infrastructure on Friday in retaliation for the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah militants earlier this week. Early on Friday morning, Israeli jets destroyed a bridge to Beirut's airport in a densely populated area.
Are we becoming irresponsible for not being more critical and asking more questions about the situation. Our local news seems to be less concerned about additional details as asserted in the Israeli and Lebanese accounts. Maybe we are just being flat with our coverage so as to remain neutral. Is that irresponsible? These are not revolutionary thoughts - to hear both sides of an issue. This article I came across from the Middle East news gives a questioning commentary on the bias that may exist in our society.

The Seattle Times should never be mistaken for legitimate journalism. Is it irresponsible? Depends on who you ask. I think most people just can't handle knowing too much about certain situations.....the term 'ignorance is bliss' wasn't just made up, it was 'realized'.
When I read the front page of any news paper I look for the flat out facts of what is going on in the world/state/city. I want to know the basic Who, What, Where, When and how. I think that is what the front paid/local sections are for. Thats what news reporting is.
When I want to expand on my reading I will read a commentery or an OP/ED section. I don't need who is right or who is wrong on the front page. I look for that myself with my own research and form my own opinions.
Newspapers are a dying relic, who really reads them everyday? I read it online and can choose to read virtually any paper I want. I know this isn't news to anybody.
It's up to the individual who has the choice to look deeper into the situation or just take a passing glance and see what, who, when, where and how happened. If you want to know WHY then you got to take that upon yourself.
I've always found any American Newssource as somewhat bias, leaning one way or another albeit slightly or overtly. This is why I get my local news from The Seattle Time/PI and get my world news from the BBC whenever possible.
But train, aren't you shorting yourself of facts when you do not get the two opposing viewpoints from a central source? We deserve at least that beyond facts. Because, its clearly obvious from the three comparisons SEA/P-I is not keeping us hip. (also, i read this last night but I found it really funny, that most Americans found themselves above average: CNN polling showed 25% of Americans surveyed believed their intelligence was in the 99th percentile) Our news is making almost as dormant yet hostile as the Romulan/Klingon neutral zone.
and -- Ctown -- harsh harsh Seattle Times assessment, i agree to a point, i still think they put out a great Sunday paper.
I think you miss read what I meant. No I dont short myself, I look at the Seattle paper to just get a general what's up. like, A bombed B and then C came over and bombed both A and B... Then I go online to take a look at papers from all over the world/country... Then Like Joe I watch the BBC/Spice Channel to get a better world view
I am actually quite a news junkie.
I don't think it's too harsh. I still read it.....I just think it's funny what our local reporters deem "newsworthy" sometimes. I agree with Train though.....if you want to be informed, take it upon yourself and become informed. The internets are a wonderful place that make being informed on certain topics easier than ever before.
People that don't know shit, don't know shit because they CHOOSE to not know shit. Then, those same people, go and pick up the local paper because it's the easiest thing to do....and then they deem themselves "informed"...and that's too bad.
the foreign news correspondant for regional newspapers is the California Condor of the Newspaper World, very few companies can afford to have quality reporting abroad (and quite frankly even domestically)...so were are we at? well, Washington Post, NYTimes, LATimes all have the capital to invest into quality journalists,
but...just because Journalists are highly compensated and hold a high profile at a large US Newspaper doesn't mean it's objective...
I guess the point that I'm trying to get is this, regional newspapers are quality at what they are...regional...they rely on the same 2-3 news sources for they actual copy that goes in the article and then they create the headline...
If you feel this is wrong or slanted, please feel free to read some Middle-Eastern publications, or Chinese press to get truly honest slant on issues...
I know the BBC was mentioned, but I also have to give a shout out to The Christian Science Monitor , ok that's it,

Looks like the SG is going to pick a team to follow in the EPL. I'm guessing he'll pick Chelsea since they are like the Sox in England, second banana to ManU in publicity but actually a better squad.
I agree that our news sources are weak for an educated major city. A big part of making people 'want' to be informed is giving more information. It can't be as sensational or hot as King 5 news with Mimi Jung, but people need more content to question. Its not enough to sit with SEA/P-I and say I got enough I'll get more if I want; a culture needs to be developed and our newspapers don't have a resounding history of being proactive like other cities. Seattle needs to beef up and not just leave choice to the individual.
and yes, big props to the Christian Science monitor, they have some gangster underground reporters in the hotspots.
I also recommend the The Nation it's a weekly, but it gets real Raw with an extremely liberal slant, but not all the way Green Party, which is as far as I'm willing to go

But looking into the actual subject these articles are related to: do you feel we are far off from an All Out Widespread Middle-East War? (israel is in battle tactics against beirut, iran/syria are funding hezbollah, the U.S. incursions into afghanistan/iraq, no one is trying to tone anything down right now)
I guess, going back to your point about the local papers, I just don't look for them as a quality source about foreign reporting...I recognize that the copy that I'm reading is the same one everyone else on the W. Coast is reading...if I'm intrigued about it, I take another look, 99% on line, as slanted as Google is...I do dig the News search and the 15 different takes Internationally on the same story...
BUT...even then it's crap shoot because of consolidation in NewsMedia...just because it comes from Australia doesn't mean it's any better than Fox news...
The middle-line is this, we find the print/sites that we like for various reasons...normally because we side w/ their viewpoint and we stick to those...I don't know anyone that looks to the Seattle Times for foreign reporting...now, if I want to know about the quality of the local Salmon season, my man Ron C. Judd is there for me...
and as the question posts, an answer echoed... it has begun: MORTAL KOMBAT!
well the Middle-East conflict is Live and On-Air right now...and no matter where you're getting your intel from it honestly doesn't matter: Isreali/Lebanon is not anything new and really has been boiling for some time, I don't have enough space to go into the reasons behind the US/Afghan/Iraq situation...and Iran is getting ready to add their name to the "The List"...are things f'd?...things were f'd about 30-40 years ago...things are close to apocalyptic now...
Here's the good news though...eventually someone is going to win in the Isreali/Palestinian conflict and we'll finally be able to answer the question about who's God is more powerful...so we got that going for us
Its not necessarily who's god is better, its more like who God thinks is more special. I still have my backup faith in Salt Lake City though just in case things get ugly.
Well, we got some good news and some bad news today.... God returned but the bad news is he called from Salt Lake
and the correct answer was....Morminism...yes that's right...I know...we were all a little shocked up here...
SG mailbag - I think the SG is going to pick Liverpool for his EPL team
Liverpool - great working class fans, great stadium, Team is quailty in England and Europe
I was going to agree with you...he couldn't pick a London team (too much like NY) and wouldn't pick ManU(Yankees), and Newcastle is too insignificant....plus they have the Crouchatron
Man. Every post reverts to soccer....Why cant every post revert to porn?
Soccer is the porn of world sports...universally understood no matter what the language...and in my case...the more Eastern Bloc, the better...
That might be the post of the day
I threw in Mimi Jung but nobody bit;i guess this is a Kathy Goertzen kind of lodge.
Mmmmm, me loves some Kitty Goertzen
amen to that brother...
Amazing, the Bush swear comment actually made it onto the seattle times. They have balls, or at least one editor does.
The Duke vs. Seattle Times battle Royale continues...and let's all welcome back 2.0 from suspension
Yes, welcome back Joe and keeping the PEMCO team off the site for the day... Thanks W, we blame you.. Cowboy diplomicy rides again.
And it's Galatasary... Bi#CHs
that was me...not 2.0 w/ the middle-finger of the day...
man, are you guys assigned hall monitors on the floors at Pemco too? or do you and jayne just go potty during recess like good boys?
I like the pic, keeps the theme going from the past couple of weeks. Plus, the undeserved blame from the Lodge keeps that theme going too. So, thanks, Train.
Apparently Pemco leans to the right. Whenever Jimbo puts up "questionable" material on the Lodge, Train starts crying like this kid here. At least Jayne is a man about it. Man up, Train.
no more crying...man...god bless Photoshop and 60 million Kerry voters who seem to have endless amounts of time to doctor photos...
What insurance company doesn't lean to the right?
Oh, and Jayne has the same views. you won't see him on that chat at all today.
Oh, and we have to clean the chalkboard at recess.
I thought more from you Jimmy, leave the low class humor to 2.0, Unless it is about midgets, farts, poop and monkeys.. so in this case it just might be appropriate.
Look at Train...going after the PoohBah
In the Lodge way of blaming others. I say we suspend Joe for Trains comments
