Morning Thoughts

"They'll come for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes.

And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the the light years, Ray, has been baseball. The Galaxy has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come."

Okay, here goes. I don't hate the film. I just don't think it's only #5 in my Top 5 baseball films. Maybe it's because I was able to play catch with my dad every once in a while & think the script is a puff-piece... or maybe it's because I have no soul. But I just don't enjoy watching the movie like 95% of America... my Top 5 Baseball Movies:

5. Field Of Dreams: One thing I do like the ode to the players of the past. The trailblazers are all too forgotten in today's modern age.

4. 61*: Great acting, great script... HBO did it right.

3. The Natural: Not sure why I get goosebumps over some scenes in this movie. One of life's mysteries.

2. The Sandlot: Baseball is a boy's game that men have the privilege to play for a living.

1. Bull Durham: The Church Of Baseball. My favorite... hands down. Bring on the debate!!!

It's totally because you have no soul...

However, Bull Durham is also my #1 baseball movie.

funny how you place the Natural at #3 even though I consider that more of a Puff-Piece with practically the same ending...don't get me wrong...good film...but I guess I don't see the difference...

also...there's a running debate that Bull Durham is more chick flick than actual baseball/guy film...not really a running debate, just something SG brings up all the time...I tend to agree with him...because my favorite film can't be touched...that's right..."Angels in the m'f Outfield"...the "SoaP" before that thing gained a buzz..

Where is Major League?

"Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls."

I'll side with joy on the sandlot. It really is a gem of a baseball movie. It really captured the sheer love of the game you have when you're a kid.

8 men out was a little dry on actual baseball and Major League is a must in any baseball top 5...Sandlot is a great film with heart, but beside that features certain elements that can't be overlooked:
1) Marion Ravenwood as the mom
2) Leary as the step dad
3) James Earl Jones (a must in baseball films)
4) Benny Rodriguez's stache when he's playing for the Dodgers
