Observations From The Pearl #4
***Joe: Talking about lost. Vader is Luke’s Father***
Round 4 of the ‘Observation Series’....
Whatever the Case May Be
Not a whole lot of unexplained stuff in this episode. Primarily this episode set up the mystery of Kate’s past as she goes kinda nutso trying to get into the Marshall’s case to get her hands on that little toy plane.
One interesting thing of note was a brief scene of all of the Losties on the beach scrambling to move their things further up the beach to keep away from the tide. Apparently the tide was coming in at an unnatural time of day and considerably further inland than it ever had before.
I wonder if had something to do with the magnet thing in the hatch or if it’s something we haven’t seen yet....
Hearts and Minds
You know what they say: Incest is best, put your sister to the test. Poor Boone. I love the Sawyer cameo in his flashback at the police station.
I love Locke in this episode. He ties up his apprentice, gives him a hallucinogen and leaves him there. That’s hardcore. You’ve got to love it.
Not really a whole lot of unsolved Mythology stuff in this episode. I guess that’s what happens when the flashback character is dead.
Although it should be of note that Boone is set to appear in at least one episode this season. Should be interesting....
Special
I’ll be honest. I liked the character of Walt just fine. But I HATED the little brat that played him. I’m not all that sorry to see him go, and it was nice barely seeing him in Season 2.
But that question should be asked (and will probably never be answered): Why was he so special. Clearly he had some kind of abilities. The bit with the bird he was reading about flying into the window, the Polar Bears appearance (Which has kind of been explained already), having insane luck at Backgammon, and the whole knife throwing experience. The writers seemed to be setting it all up to be more than coincidence.
Did the others want him simply because he was a child, or did they see something more? We may never know. But I would really love to see a flashback episode chronicling Walt’s time with the others.
Homecoming
Claire escapes Ethan, but has amnesia.
She nani gans ensue.
There’s a line in this episode that cracks me up. Its where, in Charlie’s flashback, Liz mentions her father is buying some paper company in Slough, which is a reference to the British “Office” series. Just a little geek thing.
One little thing I read about but never put together:
When we see Ethan in this episode, he has a set of scratches on his cheek, probably from Claire. However, when we see the episode in season 2 where she escapes, he never gets scratched. I realize that it’s probably just a continuity error, but it’s always fun to speculate.
Another thing that got me thinking was when Ethan threatens to kill someone every night that he doesn’t get Claire back. The first night he gets past the Losties defenses and guards without even being seen. Sayid theorizes that Ethan must have come in from the water. The first thing that jumps into my mind is that underwater hatch. Perhaps it’s bigger than we thought. Or maybe it’s located rather closely to the area of beach everyone is living at. Still, how do you get in or out of it? Only time will tell....

are cowboys from outer space going to save anyone in the next episode?
Probably not
good refresher...I've forgotten a lot about Season One...I for one would like to see more Polar Bear and a entire episode dedicated to the technical readouts of that battle station...sorry...the research stations...
I have read that you do see a polar bear in season 3...so that's good.
Casey, I have a few questions about the SIFF that I was hoping you could help me with & since your email address apparently is a mystery to the Lodge, here goes:
What level of SIFF membership do you recommend?
What level are you?
Is there an advantage to joining now/later?
I just do the goodwill level, which is $50. If you do the higher levels you get first dibs on screening that they only have limited passes to, which is a perk. I usually don't go that route because I usually get more than my fill anyway with the screening I get at the low level.
The big advantage of joining now is that you get passes to a lot of SIFF preview screenings. You get to see a lot of indie/foreign/mainstream flicks that you wouldn't get to see otherwise.
For instance, last night I got to see an early screening of the Clint Eastwood film "Flags of our Fathers" with Barry Pepper in the audience doing a Q&A afterwords.
They've had everyone from Steven Frears (High Fidelity) to Fernando Meirelles (Constant Gardner) to Ellen Page (Hard Candy & X-men 3) come in for free screenings. You really get more than your moneys worth. The way I look at it, is that I paid $50 to see 40-some free movies, plus I get to buy my siff festival tickets before the general public.
Also...I e-mailed everyone in the lodge an Evite for a Halloween party some friends of mine are throwing. It has my e-mail in it.
Great, I deleted that email since I knew I could reply on the evite. No worries, though. I'll get it from Train in case I have other non-Lodge questions in the future. Thanks for the SIFF answers.
