If. You. Are thinking. Of Missing This Film....DON'T!!!!
First off...fear not. The comic-con post is coming. It's written, I just have to get all the bloody pictures uploaded. But right now, there's a more pressing matter.
Last Friday 'Grindhouse' opened in theaters nationwide. I can tell you right now that the flick is spectacular. Both films are roller coaster rides, and the fake trailers are priceless. Watching this film in the theater was one of the most enjoyable viewing experiences I've had in quite some time. This is a pair of filmmakers in their prime doing what they love best. Even the reviews seemed to gush about how great the flick is (It's got a stellar 82% on Rottentomatoes.com).
Sadly, no one really seemed to want to check it out. The film only made $11 million dollars and landed in 4th place. A far cry from the $30 million it was expected to make by analysts (similar numbers to 'Sin City' & 'Kill Bill').
There's probably multiple reasons for this. I'm sure that the film length had something to do with it (Including previews, ads, etc it clocks in at about 3 hours 15 minutes), but personally I think the big killer was releasing a hardcore genre film on easter weekend, which is usually a weekend that only family films really seem to thrive (and seemed to be the case judging from the final numbers).
Apparently the Weinsteins are so dissapointed in the performace that their ready to chop the films up (with a little extra footage added to each) and give them seperate releases. Now, while it would be cool to see the extra footage (which has already been confirmed to be on the DVD versions of the film), I think it's a terrible idea to split these movies up. Together, the experience is so much better than it would be apart.
So I'm putting out the call: Go see this movie as a double feature while you still can!!!!! From what the rumor mill is saying, the flicks could possibly get divided up in the next couple of weeks, so time may be short. It's still showing at Cinerama (hopefully where it will stay until Spidey 3 on May 4), which can't be beat. Hell I'm planning on going again this week!
I don't want to give away too much about the film to entice you. You know how most movies give away all the best parts in the trailers? This movie isn't one of them. Some really great actors show up that you won't expect, and none of the best scenes are shown in the trailers/commercials (maybe with the exception of Rose McGowan & her machine gun leg).

I'm going to try and catch it on Saturday at Cinerama. I agree that splitting up the films would literally and artistically cheapen the whole idea behind the project. Plus, Weinsteins don't need the money & I think they'll wise up.
Actually the Weinsteins really do need a cashcow project. You have to remember that they're no longer Miramax. They're now trying to build up a brand new company pretty much from scratch.
I too am going to try and see it this weekend. I think this movie is a great idea and splitting them up may be a good idea but the idea of the films were to go together. I really hope they don't break them up...
I was thinking Friday, but I might be down for Saturday afternoon at the 'Rama...let me know who's down?...and Dude trying to topple his previous years worth of comments in one day...
Don't read the reviews. I just came across spoilers... ARGHH!!!
the fake trailers shouldn't be spoiled, but the damn reviewers did.
