2006....And the return of HOF Friday

Ive been thinking of this one for a while and it should stir some passion especially from the folks in the 303

Terrell Davis
Can an injury shortened career get to the HOF? Can 4 Outstanding years get you to the promised land?
Lets take a look at Davis Stat Wise.
Drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 6th round, 1995

7607yds 4.6ypc 60tds in 7 seasons. (Really only 4 seasons)

History Ranking
Rushes: 48th
Rushing yards: 39th
Rushing TDs: 35th

Member of the exclusive 2000 yds club with Simpson, Dickerson, Jamal Lewis and Barry Sanders (# of the 4 in the HOF)
3 time all pro and pro bowler

Another 1140yds and 12tds in the post season inclding two super bowl rings.

Total yards about 8800 and total TDS 65

2008 Rushing Yards in 1998
1st in Rushing Yards in 1998
1st in Rushing TDs in 1997(tied) and 1998
2nd in Yards from Scrimmage in 1996, 1997, and 1998
1st in TDs in 1998
30 Rushes for 157 Yards and 3 TDs in 1997 Super Bowl against Green Bay
25 Rushes for 102 Yards in 1998 Super Bowl against Atlanta

We all know the story of how injuries ended this promising career. But did he do enough? Is there precedence that where an injured running back shined for 3 or 4 good seasons was nominated by his flash in the pan reputation?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Gale Eugene Sayers.
Led NFL rushers, 1966, 1969. . .Named all-time NFL halfback, 1969. . . All-NFL five straight years. . .Player of Game in three Pro Bowls. . .Career totals: 9,435 combined net yards, 4,956 yards rushing, 336 points. . . NFL lifetime kickoff return leader. Player seven seasons but only 4 games in his last 2.

I leave the debate on the table for HOF Friday.

Gut reaction is no...but, that's based purely on my disdain for Denver Athletics...here is a case were you have to look at what I believe is the criteria for being a HOF player:

*during a 5 year gap, could you consider him one of the top 2 or 3 RB in the league...I think the answer is definitely yes...the 2000 club alone should probably get you in...
but what I think gives him the edge is this: the winning

* the hall rewards winners and I don't think its a very big strech to say that #30 was almost exclusively responsible for the back-to-backs...well...him and Eugene Robinson

*If we use Sayers as a guiding line for TD...then its fairly basic...but, let me ask the Lodge this: does the influx in quality RB's since Sayer's day change the criteria a bit for the light bulbs that shone brightest for shortest?

Good points. Can we reward a HOF spot on potential?

I am the biased one here but I don’t think that Terrell gets in based on the fact that he has two super bowl wins and a 2,000 yard season. The historical ranking stats speak volumes. He played in an era of enormous talent at RB. So I think it is hard to compare the Sayers stats with him plus Sayers was a return man. Look at a guys like Curtis Martin, Jerome Bettis these guys are HF players they had the longevity and the stats. Davis should be happy with the fact he was a 6th round pick who played college ball at Long Beach State before they cut the football program and the had to go to Georgia and take a back seat to Garrison my NFL career is in a Hearst. He has two rings and 2K season and the love and admiration of not only the train but the whole 303.

My goal is to start a petition to get Rod Smith into the hall. The all time leader in stats for an undrafted player. I know he is on the bubble. Peter King even did an article on SI.com about how he might be a solid candidate. He has a huge Art Monk look to him.

Wow. I didnt expect that reation from the Train. I figured you'd be the 1st one to start carving Terrells bust

Well, I had the bust all done right after he retired but that was just reactionary. I have had time to think about it and look at the stats and his overall place in History.

I would love to see him in the Hall along with Steve Atwater and Karl Mecklemburg but that ain't going to happen. I can live with having the greatest QB of all time in the Hall and know that he played from my team.

Joe Montana played for the Broncos? Or did you become a Niners fan?

I was going to bust out with an Otto Graham or Johnny U comment, but I figured I would make a reference that Trader Joe understood.

Hey we're up to 10 replys and its not even 11am!

I'd vote "no" since TD's career resembles one future Governor, Lynn Swann, who at the WR position didn't have the career stats to back up his HOF status.

Swann got in to the HOF thanks to his clutch SB performances, which were amazing, don't get me wrong, but I'd rank TD's SB performances ahead of Swann's (he carried his team more than Swann) & I just don't think Swann's career ranked up their with the other WR's that deserve the honor (quick shout out to the aformentioned Art Monk, who should be in and hopefully will be in the next few short months).

Here's the thing. TD doesn't stack up:

7607yds 4.6ypc 60tds in 7 seasons.(Really only 4 seasons)

Compared to another RB currently playing:

7817yds 4.6ypc 89tds in 6 seasons.(5 as a starter)

That RB is your newly crowned NFL MVP from Alabama, Shaun Alexander. If Shaun pulled a Barry Sanders and never played again, would he get in? Probably not. TD has the 2 rings, HOF though? Highly debatable.

I'm just saying that the Hall adds yardage and td's with those two SB rings...does he deserve it based purely on stats? no...but, we have to agree that the Hall doesn't always look at numbers...I think if he could've give 5 or 6 years, he'd be a solid lock...and the fact that #7 was on those teams probably takes points away too...figure every SB winner will have a future HOF player on it...now that's a good debate...

That is a great debate, has there been a SB winner without a HF player?

I was really going for the whole -

"stop it train your broncos are not going to win the SB" thing....

I can only imagine either a Broncos v. Seahawks SB or a Broncos v. Redskins rematch. Friendships would be lost that day... Goose's nest might not survive that.

Good thing Vegas has that at about 30-1

Broncos Redskins would elimate a Train invite to the Goose Super bowl fiesta. The nest would not be disturbed by bad Karma

We couldnt be in the same room.

That was pretty much my thoughts too. Good Thing this probably won't happen at least for the Skins

that would be very tough SB for me...I might obstain from viewership...and I have to argue with TB not having a HOF...I think you could make an easy argument for one of the following:

1-Good Hands 6x Pro Bowler career: 68 total TD for a FB?
2-Big Fine Lynch 5x Pro Bowler
3-Big Daddy Sapp 7x Pro Bowler
4-Brooks and Derrick 8x Pro Bowler

I had more questions about Baltimore, but check out this list:

1-Horses Mouth Sharpe 8x PB
2-R. Woodson 11x PB (LOCK)
3-J. Ogden 8x PB
4-R. Lewis 5x PB and one murder charge = another 5 PB

In fact...going back to 1980...the better argument is what SB winner didn't have 2 HOF playing on their team...the only team I've decided on is the Pats for all three championships...a couple of players will need to continue to play at a high level or get lucky in order for it to work:

R. Seymour &
A. Vinatteri (if the Hall recognizes the "kick")
+ others

I havent been able to do it except maybe for 1

The 1982 skins
John Riggins is in the HOF

Joe Jacoby, Russ Grimm and Art Monk were finalists...but they only have 1 HOFamer
