"You know what, in fact... I'm gonna have to ask you to just go ahead and come back later, I've got a meeting with the Bobs in a couple minutes."

The Sonics made a surprising mid-season move and fired Bob Weiss today. In the past, Seattle normally hasn't made mid-season moves of any kind, let alone a coaching change. But, when you are only a couple of games out in a under-performing division (Minnesota leading the Northwest Division by only 2 games) and more importantly, playing absolutely sorry defense, ranking last in opponent's points allowed (105.2) and opponent's field goal percentage (49.8), the team had to make a move.

Replacing Weiss is Bob Hill, Weiss' lead assistant, who has a noticeably more impressing NBA head-coaching record of 257-212 (.548) over Weiss'. Plus, Hill graduated from Bowling Green. Which is pretty sweet. Now we'll see how the team reacts to the Bob Hill era. In the one game that I've attended this year, Jimbo and I called Weiss getting tossed just after the 4th quarter started to spark a rally that forced the game into OT, a game where Bob Hill took over the team for the remainder of the contest. Of course, they lost that game to the Golden State Warriors... not really giving you confidence in the new Bob era.

Of course, I write that its an uncharacteristic move... later reading that Weiss is the third coach fired by Seattle during the season since 1992. In 2000, Paul Westphal was let go after a 6-9 start, replaced by McMillan. In 1992, K.C. Jones was fired after an 18-18 start and replaced by George Karl.

I wanted to write this, but being the NBA guy I let you take this one 2.0...as for the change...let me ask you this?...was the problem with the scheme's and execution or was Weiss getting what he could out of the personnel he was given?...

I think, like most things, it was a combination of both, but not exactly sure what Bob Hill gives you for the remaining 50 or so games,

Bob Weiss has coached some extremely good teams over the past 11 years...did he forget how to this year for some reason?...or should he never have been head coach to begin with?...this was a Sund mistake from the get-go...Weiss is an X's and O's guy that works well when not in the front...this is farily evident from his overall NBA record...

Not to worry...we'll have Ron Jermey on the sideline before too long...that is unless the siren decides that it isn't right for the community...

also...do you notice that when the Supes usually make this move, it tends to work out? Westphaul to Mac 10 and KC "Watch Your Speed" Jones to Krazy Karl

The difference between the Bobs... not much. And I don't think we'll see a Ron Jeremy sighting any-time soon unless you rent a porn in the near future, because I've read that he left the Heat truly because of family issues and that isn't going to change by season's end.

I think the scheme is the main thing though. You don't try and run with this team because it fundamentally takes away from your defensive focus and pressure. The other way to run and have defensive pressure is to throw crazy presses and traps in your defensive schemes (ala George Karl), to create turnovers and ample fast-breaks. The problem is: 1) The Sonics didn't trap or zone it this year to create the breaks, they were careless in their running schemes, because... 2) Seattle doesn't have the personnel to use this kind of defensive or the personnel to run as much as they were doing (see defensive #'s in the post).

Danny Fortson returned from a two-game suspension Monday with fire for NBA senior vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson, calling the executive a "gangster" for the nearly $200,000 in fines Fortson was docked for his latest transgression with an official. ... "What Stu Jackson just did is criminal as far as I'm concerned, like a gangster, like somebody strong-arming somebody, taking their money," Fortson said.

I'm not sure I wouldn't take that as a compliment coming from Big D...you think he does this when he's filling up his Hummer and the gas prices go up .10cents?...of if hair bands spike up to $5 bucks a pop..."truly f'n gangster"...like Edward G.

Joe...as you later mentioned...the last mid season firing that helped immediate was the George Karl hiring. Even when Mac-10 came aboard it took him some time to get his groove. As for the team...I think Bob Weiss was too laid back for this team...I'm not the lodge NBA expert but I think this team, like last year needs to be pushed...when that happens you'll see Vlad play better and perhaps Damian, Luke and Flip will play better.

I have to say, I think I called it. First couple games when I did a little review of the league and put the official Bob Weiss count down. Jimbo, you are right, Weiss is a good second guy but he looked most of the time like he was mute on the sideline. I want to be able to hear the coach. Perhaps this team needs Hubie Brown? Which seconds the point made, is Bob Hill much better. When he coached a little team out of S.A. he had a dominant center named the Admiral. Who else would you considered to be a good coach down the road?
