Super Cheese 1138
Instead of going tasteful this week’s movie recommendation, I’m offering up complete schlock. But it’s fun schlock.
The Returner
Okay…first the synopsis:
After an alien invasion threatens to annihilate the human race, a young Japanese girl, named Milly, travels back in time from 2084 to October 2002, and enlists the reluctant aid of skilled Tokyo gunman, named Miyamoto, to discover and prevent the start of the war. However, trouble ensues when the two protagonists are forced to deal with a Japanese mafia boss, named Mizoguchi, who is somehow involved in the start of the war by keeping the first alien spaceship and its alien pilot captive, while our two heroes race against the clock to find a way to stop the oncoming destruction from the vengeance-seeking alien invasion fleet on its way to Earth.
Now, that’s what they say it’s about, but let me really sum it up for you.
Take the Terminator, Transformers, the Matrix, and Independence Day and put them in a blender, and change the setting to Japan. When you’re done, you’ll have the Returner. What’s great about it is the fact that it really doesn’t even try to pretend that it’s not ripping off other movies. And that’s kind of what makes it fun. Even though there's not a single original concept in the movie, the whole thing is so over the top you can’t help but enjoy it. Hollywood wishes that it could churn out rip-off films that were so enjoyable, the audience almost likes it more because it's a rip off.
The thing that caught me off guard was the production value. Traditionally Japanese effects films don’t have big budgets, and it shows. This on the other hand had the record for the most expensive film ever made in Japan, so it really looks sleek.
If fun, over the top action is your kind of movie, you really can’t go wrong with this movie.

-should we revist the record setting "Devil's Rejects" post and comments as exhibit A?
Is is dubbed in Godzilla speak?
The mouth does one thing and the voice does another. Thats one of the greatest things about Godzilla Movies.
The difference is, Devil's Rejects sucked, and made me want that 2 hours of my life back.
This, on the other hand, is at least entertaining.
well...your taste in movie's is up for debate with comments like that...so we'll give your recommendation another try...2.0 has already brought better recommendations and its fair to say his movie tastes are ... as we say questionable...
