Time to Kick Ass and Chew Bubble Gum
All right…I’m gonna veer away for the movie thing for a minute hear to bring on some Old School goodness….
So…I got a little drunk with my friends last night. And every once in a while, beer + Jaeger bombs = Time to break out the good ol’ Nintendo Entertainment System. And last night, we pulled out on of the all-time classics:
CONTRA
Now this was the game that set the standard. Back in the day when Men were Men, Cheetos were CHEETOS and Mountain Dew was the drink that made wusses shake in their boots.
It’s amazing that nearly 20 years later, this game holds up so amazingly well. And, really, who needs story lines? We got 2 guys. They’ve got guns. And there are aliens. ROCK AND ROLL!!
Who can forget the spread gun or the lazer gun, or the pseudo flame-ish gun? These became staple of the shoot-em-up side scroller.
But if there’s one thing EVERYONE who played this game remembers, it’s this:
Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start.
If that doesn’t mean anything to you, then…quite frankly, I pity you.
The world may offer up Halo’s and Doom’s and Tomb Raider’s and whatever else. But the two guys from Contra can still rip it up better than Chuck Norris in a Nazi Womens Prison (Ilsa the She-Warden era)

A little movie trivia
"Ive come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass...and Im all out of bubble gum" is a line from what movie delivered by what actor?
And a bonus
What was the characters name?
Are you sure you want to go there with the "They Live" trivia?
Fine...lets do this!!!!!
Roddy Piper says the line, and the characters name is kind of a trick question. His name is never mentioned once in the film, but the credits list it as Nada. Two tidbits about that line:
1. The line was actually an ad-lib.
2. Pretty much everyone too young to have seen the film remember it as being a line delivered by Duke Nukem in the game "Duke Nukem 3-D" (along with the Ash line "Come Get Some")
Is there any other trivia we can do for "They live"? Thats pretty much the only relevant thing.
Good work MCP!
It's all about the "Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start." Man, you've got to love the cheat codes. Although, I got so good at this game in Junior High that I didn't need any cheat code to beat it.
They Live Triva:
-Writer "Frank Armitage" is actually director John Carpenter
-The fight between Nada and Frank was only supposed to last 20 seconds, but Piper and David decided to fight it out for real, only faking the punches to the face. Carpenter was so impressed he kept the 5 minutes and 20 second scene intact.
-The communicators that the guards use are the P.K.E. meters from GhostBusters

MCP....BRINGING IT SOLID ON FRIDAY!!!!...much like Han and Luke taking down Tie's from the Falcon...Contra is the ultimate duel-action drunk buddy game EVER!!!!...I won't even field arguments for that comment...not even Rampage...serious
"They live" - the insperation to a classic South Park "cripple Fight" Jimmy vs. Timmy in a battle royale for the ages.
Actually, I would have to give an honerable mention to Guantlet 2. That game was a fantastic for duel action drunk buddy gaming
