Serene Chronicles of Choice

I was considering the whole sci fi thing yesterday and was pondering what was a good action sci-fi movie? There are great things on tv like Stargate: Atlantis, the extremely well done drama Battlestar Galactica, but I had to think a little lower yet bigger in scale. I reviewed some of my past rentals and then it hit me. I really liked The Chronicles of Riddick way better than Serenity. It was just subconscious geek processing that led me to this so I've come across some hard fact numbers as well as reasonable comparisons that will show this.

Box Office Head to Head
Serenity
Domestic: $25,514,517 65.7% + Foreign: $13,333,148 34.3% = Worldwide: $38,847,665
Opening Weekend: $10,086,680 (2,188 theaters, $4,610 average) % of Total Gross: 39.5% Widest Release: 2,189 theaters

Chronicles of Riddick
Domestic Total Gross: $57,761,012 50.1% + Foreign: $57,605,740 49.9% = Worldwide: $115,366,752
Production Budget: $105 millionEst.
Opening Weekend: $24,289,165 (2,757 theaters, $8,809 average) % of Total Gross: 42.1% Widest Release: 2,757 theaters

Numbers Conclusion: Both of these films were released by Universal Studios and had nearly the same Theatre covereage. More people saw the Chronicles of Riddick. Serenity, around the world, was decidedly less popular. Thats really sad because it shows taste outside of American interests, and usually films do better overseas, and studios push harder outside of the U.S. when films don't make th chee$e at home.

And looking into this a little more, I had no freaking clue that this movie was based on a brief one season sci-fi series called Firefly which featured the same cast in the movie as it did on t.v. This should have given it more edge in terms of demographic knowledge. Apparently the show really really really sucked which is why it didn't matter. As an article I read went:Firefly was one of the beleaguered Fox network's many casualties, ranking 66th in the Nielsen ratings for its first episode and quickly descending to around 100th place for the rest of its run. Out of 14 produced episodes, Fox aired 11, unceremoniously and out-of-order Now the movie came out after the series cancelled and maybe they were trying to do a flip flop of director/writer Josh Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which began as a failed movie and became a successful TV series. Apparently this is not Universally true. The Chronicles of Riddick didn't even have a series and also it was a sequel to Pitch Black which had an even lower budget but was good enough to warrant a sequel, maybe even a third installment.

Movie Comparison

In Serenity Mal is a mercenary guy that takes on Simon Tam and his genetically modified super sister River Tam. They are fighting against the over powerful life infringing Alliance and theres this black ninja assassin guy who says, "I don't have a name. (a.k.a. i'm a poorly developed character) There's also a motley crew of spaceship hands on their ship named, the Serenity. Apparently they were trying to avoid all references to the above mentioned Firefly debacle.

In Chronicles of Riddick (Vin Diesel) is the last of vicious race called the Furions who takes on the universe dominating Necromongers who are lead by the Vaako. Now, as ridiculous as all of that is for Riddick, I liked it a lot more. I feel that bad names are way better than no-names. In T2 neither of the Terminators had names but at least they had model designations. And also, Riddick has a much more epic feel to it kind of like a space age Conan the Barbarian, which was also super cheesy in its own right.

A lot of sci-fi films follow and borrow from other stories. Its the nature of narrative. its the few that stand out which become epic benchmarks. The big deal with Chronicles and Serenity is that neither of them was great or original. Serenity tried to take the a brooding mercenary and give him a heart by helping out two souls as some petty homage to Han Solo. There's some kind of Orwellian addressment to the overarching government coverup in the Utopian dream run amuk. And then we have the reavers, mindless cannibals who go around hunting down normal humans. Riddick had that too with the Necromongers but they were undead armies that had a plan led by some extra-dimensional forces that made them scarier. Actionwise the definition of character was more emotive. When the assassin in Serenity tries to reason with Mal and then he just shoots him point blank in an instant. And then theres the scene where Riddick creeps out of the shadows and takes down some goons to save a family. Riddick clearly says less and brings out more for his character.

Also, Serenity couldn't even come up with its own slogan, they borrowed from the X-Files "Fight the Future" creedo from their last movie, which also kind of sucked. I was with Joe at Frye's electronic store last night and apparently Universal is trying really hard to get rid of Serenity. It was packaged with a red sticker that said $10 off of Serenity (with purchase of the award winning Battlestar Galactica series set). I guess it can't even sell itself so they have to try to throw it with something good. Kind of like accessories you really don't want or need that are added in on Home Shopping Network.

I know you are late to the show Duke but we have really beatin' this Serenity horse to death and even served up some horse burgers later.

Lets put this to bed.

I enjoyed Firefly the TV show after viewing it on DVD. I believe it does help to have viewed this before the movie no matter what Casey tries to tell you.

Chron of Riddick I thought was horrible and in no way enjoyable. Now I loved Pitch Black, that was original to a point and had just enough plot and action. No way did it need a sequal. Just another sad movie made by a studio to feed off a stars popularity.

For the record Serenity made it's entire production cost back off of DVD sales alone.

Secondly the TV series is amazing. You have to take some things into account when you consider the fact that it was cancelled in one season.

All of Joss Whedon's shows (Buffy, Angel and Firefly) slowly unfold. What happens in one episode affects the next episode. Watching it like this is like reading chapters of a book out of order.

Next, they decided to show the pilot last instead of first.

Then they didn't start showing the series until just before baseball playoffs. This caused the show to never been shown more than 2 weeks in a row.

And in regards to the $10 off sticker. It should be noted that Battlestar Galactica had a $10 off sticker if you also bought Firefly.

The reason the movie was made is that after the series was cancelled the DVD set was released and it sold exceptionally well (as we speak it's still #21 on Amazon.com's top DVD sellers...pretty good for a set that's been out since it's been out since 2002). So well in fact, that it's one of the all-time biggest selling DVD TV series ever. Universal saw the potential or this and bought the rights to make a film.

I'll always be in the minority as far as the lodge goes...which I find a little odd. I've introduced this series to at least 50 people and this is the only group I have ever found that hasn't really dug it.

Battlestar Galactica is THE BOMB and can tottally stand on its own. it hits ipod sales like crazy. i don't have numbers for it, i'll find them later. also, the addressment of political commentary is insanely in touch with current events.

talking about serenity is a right of passage in the lodge. i have now placed my two cents.

I think Jayne just went to roof jump off it.

You should have seen the steam coming out of his ears. He looked like Yosemite Sam.

PS - Duke shrink your post pics. You messed with the lodge Feng Shui

Firefly (Serenity tv series) in the top 3 right now on Amazon??? Thats very very weird. Its over Band of Brothers-35, The Sopranos-34, and Battlstar Galactica-28. I dunno, hardcore geeks shop hardcore online only. This is not comprehensible to me. Joe you need to find out what wheels are turning over at amazon. Someone could be stuffing the ballot boxes, so to speak.

I think Jayne might be the first lodge memeber to sign a contract with another blog due to the constant Firefly/Serenity ribbing. Our own little Steve Hutchinson.

Train, Chen Kenichi is my favorite on Iron Chef as the most entertaining. I can't count how many times his expression at the unveiling of the food item has gone off the charts. As far as reactions go he is out there.

The Future must really Be Worth Fighting For for you Jayne. Just take a deep breath and remember Vin Diesel was a nanny. Hopefully this is calming. Let that be a mantra for you. Oceans of pacifiers and Vin Diesel.

I was a huge fan of Rocubura Machiba who was the original Iron Chef Japanese and always felt that Moromoto was overrated. After that I was a Kenichi man from that point on. He always looks like a deer in headlights when they unveil the food. I love it.

I think I've only seen an Iron Chef lose once and it was Iron Chef Italian who in my opinion was a waste. They never used him. Come to think of it that was the only time I ever saw him used in a battle.

I want to see some of the episodes that were banned in the US - Whale, Sea Turtle stuff like that.

Word of advice young one.
Dont go getting you frilly little pink panties all knotted up, dropping those Fbombs like you have some point to make.

I love a good debate over anything but you pissy ass little tone in that post got me a little irritated.

Gentlemen. Enjoy the rest of your day.

I think that Jayne and Jimbo are the only two who have seen it well unless you saw it; which i am sure you have. Needless to say Jimbo hated it and Jayne loved it. This is generally how it goes in the Lodge.

I've seen Ichi the Killer, same director. I've also seen the entire Dead or Alive series. The first was really bad ass, and the end just went tottally surreal. This seems to be the case with a lot of his films. Dead or Alive 2 was strange enough that I still liked it, Ichi the Killer... it was Ok. If Audition takes the extremity of horror and focuses the surrealism of it into a coherent plotline i'll probably be ok with it. If its loopy with non-sensical inserts, like Suicide Club, I'll probably be borderline with it.

Tue Mar 21, 04:17:00 PM PST
Blogger Casey said...

I does venture into the surreal, but it's plot is pretty linear. I never myself getting confused, so I don't think you'll have much of a problem with that...
