Gooses Classic Rock Corner

I've heard it all. elder statesman, big brother. Yes I am the oldest Lodge member. I have come to accept my role and Im glad to fill it. I have spent the last few months listening to Music Reviews, Top 5 albums and I've kept pretty quiet. Why? Because I am not current when it comes to music.

Last month I turned 34. I found myself about a year ago saying something we have all heard our fathers/elders say at least once. "The music of today doesnt hold a candle to the music of my generation"

In some ways I am starting to believe this. I loaded up my new IPOD with about 600 songs that I have collect and realized that probably half of it is Music that no one would listen to. Bands that no longer exist except for "That Band" Thursday. Skid Row, Warrant. Queensryche. Pink Floyd. Old Van Halen. Plus lesser know Shark Island & Giant. Even my Rap music flows back to Run DMC, Eric B and Rakim.

Then came about 6 songs on my IPOD from what possibly rates as one of my top 5 albums ever done. Metallica's S&M. Metallica fans already swear by this album. For those that have not heard it, I figured I'd make this my 1st classic rock review.

Everyone knows Metallica. Whether you like them or not. You have heard them at one time or another. and unlike alot of bands them seemed to have weathered from a 1st generation band into a second.

So what was the concept? Well Metallica decided to do a live concert with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. S&M. Symphony and Metallica. It was an 80 piece group let by renowned conductor Michael Kamen. Adding this classic symphony to Metallica's Rock sound created a completely unique album.

I was impressed with the idea and was amazed about how different it made Metallica sound. They performed most of their major hits, including their most famous somg...One. About a soldier Who loses all him limbs, Speech, hearing and sight, and lives in his own mind, not able to communicate with the outside world.

The symphony sounds incredible and adds such a classical flavor to this. I can see other bands looking to do something like this as well (And maybe already have).

If you love Metallica and have not heard this, it is a must have.
If you like Metallica or Hard rock give this a listen. One thing about music for me is I want something unique and different. This fits like a glove.

David Mustaine ad lib, "How do you think it feels being the #2 Heavy Metal band ever! No matter what i do i'm always gonna be #2. All I ever wanted was to see my little Danish buddy again, but I can't man...."

I have heard this album. Surprisingly very good. The SF Orchestra did a great job with their arrangements.

the triliogy of Ride the Lighting, Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All equal the greatest three album stretch by any band ever...equal to Tolkein's LOTR triliogy, also including the great parrellel of Kill 'em All as the Hobbit...that being said, the band that I grew up loving did what I respect in most musicians...they grew and devloped into different directions that I chose not to follow...does it take away the creedence of those four records=no...but, I choose not to recognize anything by the band following the Flemming Rasmussen days...
