Still Fantastic
It is hard to fathom that the NBA Playoffs are over. They were great and we saw the emergence and dominance of Dwyane Wade as he led the Heat to the championship. He claims that he did not do it single-handedly, and if you know basketball, you know this is true. On the offensive side of the ball, one player in a five-man lineup definitely can take over a game... but defensively said one player cannot. You can talk all you want about how the referees blew calls during the NBA Playoffs & throw out your conspiracy theories, but the Mavs are primarily a jump-shooting team. And jump-shooting teams don't go the FT Line as much as teams that are more aggressive to the hoop. You take it to the hole, you get fouled more. It's a simple game. And the reason D.Wade's commercial says, "Fall Seven Times. Stand Up Eight."
But let's get back to Riley's defense. The Miami Heat ranked first in defense in the playoffs holding opponents under 43 percent from the floor. The defensive mentality of Pat Riley and the Heat was the reason that I picked the Heat in six games in the Detroit series and why I picked them again in the Finals against the Mavs. That coaching edge of a defensive mentality coupled with veteran play.
It's easy to say that GP, Toine & Zo were riding Shaq & D.Wade to the Championship... but each of those players are now crafty veterans, knowing to always box-out on a rebound, switch to the hot shooter, take the charge and make the extra pass. Experienced players know this, and experienced playoff players perform it during the high-pressure playoff atmosphere. It all adds up to why the Heat won in 6. Experience, defense, coaching and D.Wade's aggressive play. I love hard-nosed basketball. Aggressive basketball.
So when the Sports Guy worries about the state of the NBA (I'd agree that the NBA should let it's highest rated refs officiate the entire Finals), I say it's more about letting the hard fouls go. Throw back to the clothelines in the Playoffs. Hard hitting is why the NBA Finals are entertaining. Hard hitting is why Goose enjoyed his first World Cup experience this past Saturday when McBride's head was split open. I'm still an NBA fan and I love the outcome more than because I predicted it. But because I enjoy the game played at it's highest level.

this makes two years in a row of not watching an entire minute of the NBA finals...partially due to the WC, but partially due to that burn-out factor but the Miami Heat...Riley is the man who almost single-handedly destroyed the NBA with the Knicks, by making 70-68 scores acceptable...now...thanks to D. Wade and his Jordan-esque calls in the paint...you never get to watch a continual flow of bball...difference between the West and the East...FT's might be crucial to winning championships, but nothing causes me to click the channel more than a phantom hand-check on a superstar 20 feet away from the net...
Kudo's to the Diesel, proving he is the Jordan of this era in terms of winning...and doing it without Kobe or Phil...and kudos to Stan Van Gundy for ...wait...that's right...we don't talk about SVG...2nd rule about Heat bball?...WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT STAN VAN GUNDY...
So here's to looking forward:
*knock-out rounds and finals of WC
*British Open
*NCAAF '07
& finally:
*TRAINING CAMP: UW AND CHENEY-STYLE!!!!
Is the moratorium over on the NBA Finals? ...I have it Tivo'd....I totally didn't know who won yet ;-)
So many "rules" now....I'm afraid to post anything time sensitive.
Stay tuned for my Spring Training Preview - 2006!
Jimbo hating Riles... nothing new. That's why I like you, you're predictable.
The WC going on does make a lot of sport to watch. If only we were riding the severence packages post-ELNK days...
See, now little Shawn is afraid of posting due to this friggin moratorium. The Lodge is now in a state of fear. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they.
I'm fighting the sport scores over there...so the Lodge doesn't have to fight them here...seriously, I should've specified that the moratorium only effects sporting events not played in North America...and the '24 hour rule' is really until 7am of the next day...sorry Chone...that's just the way it is...
I am predictable on Riles and the NBA, as you linked with your Simmons piece, professional sports (especially the NBA) is ruined by officiating....game 5, seriously 40-12 FT difference?....why should I even know the names of the the three worst referee's in the NBA? (Bavetta, Salvatore, Delaney)...anyway, I'm not going to rehash the SG's argument (good article btw), but I'm just not interested in watching that style of bball, and from the ratings, most Americans aren't either...that's all...
that makes the first two major American sporting events of 2006 mired in controversy over officiating...does anytone belive that gambling hasn't infiltrated the highest levels of all professional sports?...unfortunate, but eventually this will kill one of these leagues....
Did you just call me a chode?
in so many words...
In a lot of words.
