Teaser Poster A Go-Go Pt 2

Three teaser posters were released today for the upcoming Clerks 2 movie….

When I first heard that Kevin Smith was going “back to the well” with another Jay and Silent Bob film, I was a little bummed. Don’t get me wrong, those first five “Jersey” films are great, but I was looking forward to seeing Kevin Smith try something new…

First there was the infamous “Superman Lives” script. The story behind the writing of the script is crazy, and makes you realize just how stupid they are out in Hollywood. For the story, I recommend you check out the “Evening with Kevin Smith” DVD. There’s some great stuff on there, including his feud with Tim Burton, his never to be released Prince Documentary and tons of other stuff. Anyway, that project fell through, and with good reason. The script is pretty good, but some of the stuff he was required to add just made the thing pretty hokey (i.e. Superman vs. Polar Bears?!?!?! Huh?!?!)

Next there was buzz galore about Kevin Smith doing a “Fletch” movie. But after some disagreements with casting (Kevin Smith wanted Jason Lee, Miramax wanted a bigger star) the project fizzled out.

Then there was the “Green Hornet”. An opportunity to write and direct a Super-Hero type film. After an amazing 6 issue comic book run on “Daredevil” and a 12 issue run on “Green Arrow” this seemed like a perfect match. But Smith, realizing that he’s not a dynamic enough director (he said the movie would have just been the Hornet and Kato talking about not getting laid, and then running off to action off screen), walked away from the project so that he could do….

“Jersey Girl”. What. The. F**k.

So after a failed attempt at a non-jersey movie, Kevin’s going back to where it all started with “Clerks”. The previews look pretty decent, and I’m sure it’ll be pretty funny, but I had this feeling in my gut that I was going to be disappointed.

However, the more I’ve been reading the more excited I’m getting….

The film was recently screened at the Cannes film festival, and after the film it received an 8 MINUTE STANDING OVATION! That’s a long f’n ovation. The reviews that have been pouring in since that screening have been really flattering, and a lot of these are coming from critics that aren’t the biggest Smith lovers.

The buzz seems to state that this is a return to form for Kevin Smith, and that this is the best thing he’s done since “Chasing Amy” (which was BY FAR his most well received film).

In addition to this, there’s a Clerks Animated Film called “Clerks: Sell Out” coming out in the future. If you haven’t gotten a chance to see the six episodes of the Clerks cartoon that were made, you have to check it out. It’s some funny stuff (you can’t beat any show that includes a token black character named Lando, who literally does nothing, or has Charles Barkley getting dissed or beaten up during every single episode). The plot of the animated movie is that Dante and Randall decide to make a movie about working in a convenience store. Shenanigans ensue.

You have me excited about this one. The friggin huge (always choose small unless needed) images are freakin me out though. I like that the leather clad honey is super-big, but the mugs of silent bob & jay are waaaaaay to large for the Lodge. TP, you are like a crack addict all hopped up looking for his next hit so he can geek out. That said, well done with the shenanigans.

Movie posters should always be big...especially if they feature the uber-hot Rosario Dawson

See, the great thing about the Lodge is that if you use the image tool (instead of embedding it manually with an html code), you can click on the picture to make it bigger.

Dawson is a hottie. But you are still a moron.

I still think bigger pics are appropriate in this scenario....

"I'm not a moron, I'm a man. I'm a man who discovered the wheel and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal...and brawn. That's what kind of man I am. You are a smelly pirate hooker. Why don't you go back to your home on Whore Island?"

Smith's website had some great 'making of' documentaries filmed on set and during the pre and post production, good cameo's by all the regular bit parters: Lee, Affleck, Mosier, etc...

That being said, Smith has never really adjusted his style to the Hollywood big budget style, I think he tried with Jersey Girl, but he needs to remain in the quasi-indie state, I'd love for him to develop an original Superhero flick built on Indie ideals w/ a lot of dry wit...something like Unbreakable and Chasing Amy or maybe he could pull off a good film on the new Batwoman character...

the above comment was supposed to indicated a fusion of Unbreakable and Chasing Amy...ummm..yeah...just wanted to get my idea across in case Smith ever reads the Lodge archives from 06.09.06...

Im going to jump to the defense of the MCP here.

#1 Good post MCP
#2 You rag on him because he only puts a big pic off IMDB
#3 The pics are not that big. Stop being so F'n anal Joe. Someone may need to remove that stick from up your bum. (a little British speak to honor the Bangers and Mash crown)

Kevin Smith's biggest weakness has always been what he does with the camera. He's the guy who sets the camera up and has two characters talk in front of it. He keeps his camera movement to a minimum.
...What I'd like to see him do is make a film with a really high quality Director of Photography. His previous DP's have been less than stellar:

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back: Jamie Anderson (Batman & Robin, Showtime)

Dogma: Robert Yeoman. Mostly indie fare. Since Dogma he's gone on to do stuff like the Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, Squid & the Whale. I consider this the best shot of Smith's flicks

Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Clerks II: David Klein (Outside of Kevin Smith films, he hasn't done much)

Great point about the DP's used. I'd have to say that Smith's scripts are what set his movies apart... and when they fail the scripts aren't up to the par that he set with Clerks, Mallrats & Chasing Amy.

once again I question why I even bring up arguments with the Geek Prince...I'll just end it with this...what?...like the back of Volkswagon?

I wasn't arguing with you Jimbo...I actually agree with you. I was just elaborating as to why it is he's had trouble adjusting

MCP, you should change your screen name to Geek Prince. Very befitting.

Breakfast, shmreakfast. Look at the score, for Christ's sake. It's only the second period and I'm up 12 to 2. Breakfasts come and go, Rene, but Hartford, "the Whale," they only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime.
