The Hot Stove League
Time to get some non soccer talk flowing...
Would you Trade for this Man?
ESPN is reporting the the Mariners are hot on the trail of Alfonso Soriano
"The Mariners are the latest team to make a run at Alfonso Soriano, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports. Their interest is serious enough that the Nationals have two scouts at Seattle's game in New York on Monday night, along with a third watching the Mariners' Triple-A team play in Tacoma"
Would you give up Adam Jones? How about Gil Meche?
at 5 games out and Soriano as a FA at the end of the season. Is it worth it?
Does anyone care about the hometown 9?

Wants to play 2b next year after he is a Free agent. Last I heard Jose Lopez has that spot locked up for the next 5 years
should it happen? no...will it? 70/30 odd of yes...the BavasiGrover contingent feel the walls closing in on them...
The move makes no sense...you only have two positions for him to play, LF and/or DH, his reputation is that of a clubhouse cancer, he's barely a decent outfielder and horrible infielder...
The M's aren't giving up Lopez, so there's really can't be a discussion about resigning him unless he ops to LF or DH for the next 5 years, also...right-handed hitters are going to stay away from Seattle like the plague following the word of mouth from former players and the reduction in numbers once they start hitting in the SoDo district....
This team isn't that far away from being an upper-tier team...it starts with adding another top 2 ace and changing their GM and Manager...not adding an expensive bat for 65 games...
Ok, Jimmy said basically everything I was thinking... No need to post my remarks.
Well, the RH bat comment is pretty much wash since Soriano has already hit 29 HR so far this year in one of the biggest ballparks in the league in DC.
I'd be down only if we could negotiate a contract extension before making the deal. That would be my stipulation, and yes, I'd give up Gil Meche... and throw in a Shin Choo-Choo or the Aussie Snelling... but I'd be weary of giving up Adam Jones.
The other stipulation I'd make is making Soriano play CF and not 2B. Lopez is your man at 2B and Jimbo is right that it would be a mistake to move Lopez to DH and let an inferior 2B play the IF. Soriano has been a better than AVG OF this year and is leading the NL is outfield assists.
I don't think the M's will pull the trigger, and I'd say the odds are only a slim 30/70 that it gets done because of the contract extension thing. But crazier sh!t has happened. I mean, we fleeced Milwaukee for Ray-Ray Allen 3 years ago... who says it couldn't happen again?
good points as always 2.0...I supposed that's what an Insider account will get you...the extension is the key part to the deal and convincing him to play CF when the Mets and Dodgers will give him 2nd base and the extension right now...but, if he does agree to CF and the extension then I think Meche and Jones might be worth it...but, we force the Nats to take Pinerio also
and the ballpark thing is a factor...even though RFK is a big park...he's still hitting off of AAAA Pitching in the NL...
No Insider knowledge on that one. My Insider account expired. That is just what I would do if I were the M's. Of course, they still have Chuck Armstrong on payroll, so my confidence a deal with an extension isn't very high.
I wouldn't throw in Pinerio, but instead deal him to the Yankees for 1 or 2 Single-A prospects, since the NY farm system doesn't have any developed prospects.
Well it looks like I'm a little late to this party.....everything seems to have been said already.
I can echo everyone's concerns about the deal though.....It makes absolutely NO SENSE unless you can lock him up beyond this season. It's as simple as that. No extension should mean no deal....but I wouldn't put it past this front office.
The M's may not be that far away from being a better club...but that means that they are also not far away from being a bad club either. I think that there is a part of me that wants this deal to get done because it might finally put the nail in Bavasi's coffin. That jackass needs to go.
Maybe he and Wally Walker could go into a sports franchise "management consulting" business together. Their combined success rate at consistently producing mediocre results could be compelling to some....
That's a good idea. Isaiah Thomas would be the President/CEO of the "management consulting" venture...
