Speculation from the French and British tabloids that Materazzi said something about Zidane's mother or called him a terrorist. Another WC site backed up the claim. Rule #2 of the Lodge is no talking about Mom's. So apparently Zidane was just following protocol.
According to a French co-worker here at Amazon.com, there are some other, smaller news outlets that suggest the slur in question is "harki", which means something like "Algerian who sided with the French" and is a pretty serious slur. And that the closest analogy in American English would be various terms to describe African-Americans who "sell out" to whites, such as "Uncle Tom" and others that aren't fit for print in the Lodge.
After all of the media frenzy surrounding the incident, Zizou did end up winning the Golden Ball for the best player in this World Cup. Only 25 votes seperated Zidane from Italys's Fabio Cannavaro.

No Jayne, WC is not over. You missed a GALACTIC event as indicated by the .GIF, it was phenomenal. I don't know how much trust I put into UK news, especiall from The SUN. I am intrigued, by the linguist in me, how the exchange took place, in french, in english, in italian, in spanish?

Unsportsmanlike, yes and I have no doubt it was provoked. One of the sad things about international soccer is rampant racism still played out on the pitch. This is like a weed that continues to plague most of Europe. Many fans taunt and insult players of color with reckless abandon. You think the Philly/NY fans are bad nope, the Turks, Pols and Germans have them beat ten fold. I’m sure ZZ has had a lifetime of taunts and racist cat calls. The majority of times he turns the other cheek but when you are on the worlds biggest stage your body is aching and you just missed a header to win the game I can only imagine the mounting frustration. Am I giving him an excuse maybe but emotions get the best of all of us. This wont take away from the fact that he is the best player of our lifetime. Plus, no one talks about your mom… That alone deserves a head butt.
The header in OT that was blocked by Buffon's incredible save probably did cause some frustration. Zidane's photo here sums up my viewing experience during yesterday's final.
