Doesn't Dharma Shark sounds like it should be the name of a band?
****Joe. I'm going to talk about YEAR OLD episodes of "Lost". You'll probably want to look away. BTW ROSEBUD IS A SLED!****
LOST Season 2 is finally out on DVD, which meant Jaynee spent all of last night wading through the discs.
This was the season that was completely all things Hatch-like. It was a departure from the previous season, which irked some viewers, but I really dug the way they managed to keep the show from getting stale. Really you can only obsess about things like the numbers for so long before you get bored, and I think that is something the writers were extremely aware of.
This season really started giving us a lot of answers: Why did the plane crash? Where did Claire go? Where's Walt? What about Danielle's Daughter? Etc, etc. However for every answer we got, there were 10 more questions (What the hell is up with the four toed statue?)
But most of you already know all of this (except Joe, who's still waiting to see if this DVD fad has any real footing). What about the special features?
I found the season one set to be very impressive. The branching commentary on the pilot is a highlight that I use as a measuring stick against other commentaries. The menu's were striking, and fun to just stare at. This set is no different.
The one real dissapointment I have is that there are only 5 Commentaries. I would have loved more, or at least a track for the season finale (seriously, what's the deal with the toes!). The commentaries are on:
2.1 Man of Science, Man of Faith
2.9 What Kate Did (And features Evangeline Lilly)
2.10 23rd Psalm
2.16 The Whole Truth
2.18 Dave
The special features disk is presented as a Dharma training video, and even feature new footage of Dr. Marvin Candle who explains the navigation of the disk. It's broken up into 3 pieces: Observation, Conditioning & Conclusions.
Phase 1: Observation
Fire & Water: Anatomy of an Episode: This is a feature about the creation of an episode from writing the script to post production. It's pretty interesting, although I get the feeling the only reason they included this was to explain that the length of time it takes to make an episode is the real reason for all of the re-runs last year.
Lost: On Location: This is a series of 10 featurettes (each about a particular episode) giving a brief behind the scenes looks of certain episodes throughout the series.
The World According To Sawyer: This is a funny little feature about all of the various nicknames Sawyer has come up with for the characters on the island (Calling Hurley Deep Dish & Jin Chewie are probably my favorites)
Phase 2: Conditioning
Lost Flashbacks: These are deleted flashback scenes from two episodes: Abandoned (Shannon's Flashback) & Lockedown (Locke Flashback). These scenes don't really offer anything new, although I did really like the Shannon flashbacks.
Deleted Scenes: There's about 15 or so deleted scenes. Nothing really new, as far as mythology info goes. Most of them seem to have been cut primarily for time, and they are pretty good. There's a scene with Ana Lucia and Mr. Eko that I particularly liked.
Lost Bloopers: I'm a sucker for Blooper reels.
U.K. Promo: When they started showing "Lost" in the UK, they made this really trippy commercial for it that is totally worth checking out. It's hard to explain, but it's basically everyone in the cast dressed nicely dancing around the crash site. You really need to see it to get it.
Sneek Peeks: Various trailers for ABC TV shows, a couple movies and a behind the scenes featurette of Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto"
Phase 3: Conclusions
Lost Connections: This is a pretty neat feature that allows you to trace the connections between all the characters we've met in 2 seasons of the show.
Mysteries, Theories, And Conspiracies: A featurette about all of the theories that people have come up with. The writers chime in and offer up a few little hints about what it's all about.
Secrets From The Hatch: A pretty cool look at the creation of the hatch set, the various designs they went through and some of the little stuff you never really got to see on the show. Pretty neat stuff. You finally get to see a really clear version of Desmonds painting at the entrance of the hatch.
All in all, this is a fantastic set and, of course, I completely recommend it to all "Lost" fans. This is a show that really benefits from repeat viewings.
Just barely a month to go until season 3!

way to bring it MCP...good recap...I'm usually not one to get into the details of the DVD sets, but the UK trailer sounds good, going to look around utube for it...
I think the 5 episodes they gave commentary are good choices, obviously the finale would've been better, but 23rd Psalm and Dave where two of my favorites...
Unfortunately, I don't watch tv very often unless its Battlestar Galactica, or World Poker. It sounds like LOST is crack and require a hit of acid to navigate it. Suffice, your summary will allow me go glaze over commentary with people in the elevator.
amazing that LOST isn't Geek enough for theDuke...how does that make you feel MCP...like you need to go out watch the entire 2nd season of Voyager?...
oooh, i didn't instigate that. but ITS STILL ON!
Lost is crack. But it's the high quality imported stuff. You really should check out the series. You've got 2 seasons on DVD you can watch at your lesiure.
Excuses are inacceptable.
that's like unacceptable's cooler brother
inacceptable???
Not one of my prouder spelling moments.
