I had the pleasure last night after I think my 25th hour of Football from the weekend to watch one of the best films of not only the past year, but the past several years. I’ll be the first to admit that I probably watch 10% of the amount of films that our resident fanboy watches, but I try and make good decisions and make every shot count. This obviously was the same strategy that Rian Johnson used when writing and directing his first feature film simply entitled “Brick”.

I know several Lodge members have seen the film so I’m going to give a brief review. Guy gets call from ex-girlfriend, someone dies, he looks for answers, gets in over his head, and someone else dies, character development evolves. Please don’t mistake my one sentence plot review as a telling sign of a weak story. Nothing could be further from the truth; however the brilliance of this film is in the dedication of Johnson to classic Film Noir from everything from the overly loud footsteps of someone running down a hall to the telephone rings that modeled mid-20th century rotary phones. In my opinion the most enjoyable genre of cinema and most difficult to create.

Johnson mirrored his script after the writings by legendary Detective Novelist Dashiell Hammett, who penned the legendary book The Maltese Falcon and the often clichéd character of Sam Spade. The pace and intellect of Johnson’s words mirror a forgotten age in cinema where metaphors were intertwined with script writing to compact 100 ideas into one paragraph. A feat barely approached in the modern era of screenwriting (excluding Cohen Brothers).

The characters that Johnson has created reflect a 40’s era detective story set in a modern-day Southern California High School that has all the ancient old-school charm of say, Redmond. The 21st century decor mixed with golden-era dialect is what really gives this film the brilliance rarely seen from first time directors. His ability to find the aesthetic beauty in a 2A High School football field along with a man-sized drain tunnel proves my point that big-budget directors often lose sight of their natural abilities, hopefully Johnson won’t we he gets a huge payday for his next film.

The film is starred by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, yes, the kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun, who amazed the hell out of me with one of the best young acting performances since Elijah Wood in “North”. The rest of the cast, although no-named, was hired correctly and quality performances from Lukas Haas and specifically Nora Zehetner, who sold the 40’s era female protagonist character perfectly. Without her performance and classic look this movie simply doesn’t work, also a shout out to Claire from Lost for stopping by the set and playing a big character without a lot of screen time.

Just wanted to give some words to a film that I think demonstrates all the elements of quality writing and directing that was shot for $500,000 and edited on Johnson’s home computer, maybe the next step for our own resident fanboy?

Thanks Jayne, I'm amazed it took me this long to see the film and I can't wait to see what Johnson is going to do next...hopefully the big-budget blues won't effect him like it has others...really can't say enough about this film, haven't purchased a DVD in a while and might make this the first one of the year...

It's kinda cool because you're really starting to see a new generation of filmmakers come in and really embrace noir style filmmaking.

It seemed to start back up w/Christopher Nolan's "Memento" but there's kind of been a surge in the last year or so w/flicks like "Brick", "Kiss Kiss Bang Band", "Luck Number Slevin" and even "Sin City".

That's the great thing about low budget filmmaking, and the birth of new filmmakers: They're not afraid to tackle genre pictures that may seem dated.

Twenty years ago we had guys like Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, and James Cameron all emerging out of low budget horror. It kind of feels like we're hitting another cycle.

First of all, come on Duke...stand up and get your movies back!

Second, I enjoyed the film but I thought it lulled a little bit in parts. I thought it had a very simplistic story and it tried really hard to make it fit into the time frame.

The 3rd rock boy was great in it and so were the supporting cast!

I have a hard time taking a movie review from someone who:

A) Had Chasing Liberty in his Netflix queue prior to his relationship with Maude

B1) Owns "When a Man Loves a Woman"
B2) Is the biggest Andy Garcia fan on the planet.

Sorry to call you out Dude, but first Pirates? and now this? You might have to turn in your wings soon...I think you've lost your edge...

I'm just not a huge fan of Pirates...if this makes me a bad person...then put me on top of the list...as for the other two...I have righted those wrongs. I turned in my Andy Garcia fan club membership.

Remember I'm not sayin' I didn't like Brick...I enjoyed it...I'm just sayin' it lacked in a few spots...

Okay, here's the thing. I thought Crash was the most overrated movie of 2005... so when I saw this review, I thought it was friggin Casey who wrote it. But no! It was Jimbo, the same guy who was on my side with the overrated media-driven Crash.

I'm with Dude on this one, Brick is nothing special. Only a *** film in my mind. A high-school noir film is a great idea... and it was edited and executed well. But if you take the high-school setting angle out of the film, the movie doesn't translate. I was excited to see it, and it was a disappointment.

Sophia Loren and Isabella Rossellini. Any woman who can turn 70 and look as totally smoking as Ms Loren deserves respect from the Lodge. In my humble, yet evil opinion. And the 1st Pirates movie was saved only by the impressively creative acting skills of another smoking actor, Mr Johnny Depp. Other than that, it was kind of a boring crapfest. But again, I'm evil, so what do I know?

Guess who? I've been asked to contribute. HA! At this point, most of you should know that my taste in movies, television and books ranks up there with the Golden Girls. If it's not Project Runway (greatest show on TV), Bridget Jones (greatest movie ever made), or Whitney My Love (greatest book ever written), I am not interested. I seriously embrace my lack of credibility, and mindless fluff. Speaking of which, The Last Kiss was a GREAT MOVIE. Much more chickie than Garden State.

As far as Maude protecting Dude... They are dating, and share a lot of time together (MIA Dude), as well as very similar, maybe warped interests in film and movies. If anything, Maude has the leg up on credibility there.

As far as mature older women go, I second my husband's assessment.
