World War Z

This book is probably the best social/political analysis book I have read this year. Its fictional, but because of its reinterpretation of society it allows a whole different perspective. More specifically, it allows a hole into the cultural problems of our personal lives and societies'. Did I mention also, its about when zombies take over the earth? World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War is oddly enough not filled with the gore, bad humor, and desensitization expected with horror. Its a real story, given to you as fact. Because we all know that the undead will rise soon and you better get yourself a semi-automatic pistol or at least a shovel to kill all those G's. Man, i still dream about this sh*t - and randomly picking up this book has brought it to the imagination again.

(book intro excerpt)
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result....

Ranging from the now infamous village of New Dachang in the United Federation of China, where the epidemiological trail began with the twelve-year-old Patient Zero, to the unnamed northern forests where untold numbers sought a terrible and temporary refuge in the cold, to the United States of Southern Africa, where the Redeker Plan provided hope for humanity at an unspeakable price, to the west-of-the-Rockies redoubt where the North American tide finally started to turn, this invaluable chronicle reflects the full scope and duration of the Zombie War.

The author Max Brooks is Mel Brooks son. From the strange minds of comedians I guess their progeny strangely evolve into mangling reality further. His first project was the oddly successful, but less narrated, Zombie Survival Guide. Besides the absurdity of his story in WWZ (which could still tottally happen), Max does a beautiful job of intimately detailing the connections of military, government, business, and religion throughout this entire book by fictionally retelling the stories of survivors. My personal favorites are of Russian soldiers being "decimated" by their own armies after they refuse to fight, or the Japanese otaku computer geek who is stranded in his apartment building and saves himself after confronting an outside world that is even more alien than before. These respeak of dehumanizing killings in Chechnya, or hyper technological detachment - in itself a loss of humanity in tech illusions. What makes these stories real is that the characters are essentially human and their lifestyles and feelings are ones we live.

His story was inspired by the original WWII book The Good War: An Oral History of World War II by Studs Terkel. In the same way it takes into honest account those who lived through WWII. For our modern 21st century lives - without a truly connecting and unifying spirit in our nation and globe, this fictional book is a kind of identity stimulator that is sorely needed in our culture.

World War Z's main site is really fun. You can Calculate Risk of survival or death during the Zombie outbreak. I scored a measly 38% and I even live in a house with bars on the doors and windows. The other cool thing are the podcasts available on the site. An audio book was compiled as interview recording from survivors. They feature actors Alan Alda and Mark Hamill as voiceovers among others. Pretty much everything about this is high calibre.

There was a high dollar shoot out war over this books movie production rights between: Brad Pitt & Leonardo Di Caprio. WTF. This ocurred even before the book was released. Brad Pitt and his production company Plan B won the rights. I can't imagine what Tyler Durden is up to anymore. Zombies are a great threat vehicle to really assess where we're headed; i mean i haven't planned my terrorist bombing escape route, but i sure know how to survive the undead outbreak.

Awesome review Duke! I've actually been meaning to pick this up for a while now, and now I'm totally gonna get it this weekend.

If you dig the epic-zombie stories, I totally would recommend you check out a comic book series called "The Walking Dead"

It's a continuing series, following one guy through a world taken over by zombies. The really cool thing about it is the fact that it just keeps going. Instead of stopping @ the 2-hour mark most movies are forced to, this book just keeps on following the survival story as the world gets more and more @#$%ed up.

It's got a surprising realism to it, and is one of the best new titles I've come across in the past few years.

Hey Dutchie, you take the Risk Calculator and tell me your chances aren't slim. If that doesn't scare you into getting ready, then I'll have to call you as good as Zed to me.

Well... looks like I came in on the risk calculator at 44%. Higher than you, Devo. Looks like the firearm experience with my cop friends has paid off.

No, but you come from a long line of machete wielding Filipinos. And there is something to be said about that... it might give you a percentage or two... maybe get you to 35-36%.

I really hated Land of the Dead, and I was really cheated with Dawn of the Dead (remake). I'm hoping that Romero's new film Diary of the Dead will redeem itself. Some of the stuff i've read about it indicate a Blair Witchy kind of vibe, but there's modern content to it, like people uploading footage of Zeds on myspace like crazy instead of real news footage.

I was a little let down w/Land of the Dead, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit (And I'm in love with Asia Argento), and to be honest I LOVED the remake of Dawn of the Dead. It's one of my all time top Zombie flicks. It's right up there with 28 days later.

If you think about it, it's a natural progression for the Romero films. Think about it:

Night: Utterly stupid zombies
Dawn: First signs of intelligence, remember the mall, etc.
Day: We introduce 'Bob' and see the first possibilities of Zombie Intelligence
Land: Basic understanding from a zombie.

my thing about that is mindless zombies = chaos. an unorganized mass of death is a much more terrible fear than something with calculating reasons. its one of the things that drives horror, bad things for no reason. it creates something more powerful as well, like Nature. something uncontrolled is better for a zombie. smart zombies instead become drama - which is not what zombies are for. i don't need a macbeth zed.

Fri Sep 22, 01:24:00 PM PDT
Blogger Casey said...

At the same time thought look at it like this:

Romero's already done the Zombie-chaos aspect. Every one of his films has used Zombies as a metaphor. This time the metaphor was in regards to class systems. Whether you want to look at them as lower class or slaves, the metaphor is still there.

I have nothing but respect for the fact that Romero keeps evolving to new ideas in this zombie flicks. It would be so much easier to just repeat himself.

I got a 53% and you know what, it is totally accurate. Believe me, I know. After spending the last four years planning and drilling for Z day, I think I have a good idea of what's going to happen. Also, Devin would more likely be 40%. This is primarily due to his recent purchase of a weight bench and 80's era aerobic trampoline. He is ready to run.

Joe, I am sorry but you are really just 15%. No offense but your people just go and try and plug a hole in the nearests dike anytime there is an emergency of any kind. Not your fault, but after your people decided it was worth living below sea level (the better to harvest your precious precious tulips) they have pretty much been bred to repair sea walls as a response to any stressor. Dutchillvania would best serve the cause by acting as lure, enticing the undead with the promise of sweet eats. As soon as they are in there, munching on your clog wearing kinfolk, we could blow the dikes and let the sea usher many zombies to a watery grave.

Devo, I need to ask. Seriously, what is the sustainability of your house? Like right now. Personally, I have some anxiety about the place I am in. No defensible positions and it backs a large golf course. I know what your thinking, "sweet! Open kill zone out the back!" You would be wrong...and dead. House sitting blows because I had to leave my gear in the bunker.

Don't worry, Ryan is one of us. Yea Ryan, the house is pretty sweet, every window and door at ground level has heavy cast iron bars on them. Even at the rear bedroom there's a latch that will release and swing the bars open from the inside if immediate escape is needed. I don't know what my feelings are on the hill behind my house. It could make for a good escape route since the undead don't climb over obstacles well, and also a kill zone, but I don't know how long that could hold up.

and we shouldn't be to hard on ourselves on the risk assessments. when 3/4's of the U.S. are reanimated, your chances are likely not double digit in reality. unless you live near a windmill... then your chance is automatically ZERO.

I just really wanted to get going on the right foot you know. All is better now, we were driving through this neighborhood and she point to house and says something like "Look, they don't have any full sized ground floor windows! Very secure!"

Between that and her ability to wield a Hanzo Sword, I think she is a keeper.

Ryan, I think she's a keeper because she keeps your clean and presentable to society. Of course, when the Z hits, that uncleanliness will have it's advantages... and your sliding scale incompletely inaccurate.
