LA to Bend it like Beckham

David Beckham has or maybe it was Posh that decided that it was time for a change of scenary.

The LA Galaxy have ponyed up 250$ Million to the former England captain. Beckham and Real Madrid have parted ways which left the door open for a MLS team to swoop in and pickup there first major star in a struggling leauge.

Might this be the first of many aging stars to hit the US? Might this be NASL redux?

you stole my thunder for pic 'o the day...and let me tell you the way I heard...

Me: (Sitting on couch doing email)
Mrs. Poohbah: Did you hear Becks is going to LA?
Me: I knew he wasn't staying in Madrid, this must've just happened
Mrs. Poohbah: Yeah, I just got an update from People.com
Me: (Shrugs head)

Anyway, I think this is a positive for MLS, although $250 is a little much to be paying a downward sliding RM who can't defend or keep pace with anyone on the European Continent anymore...he'll still draw crowds...good move Alexi...

wow...did you read this article from the Guardian...

"According to the Battersea Dogs' Home website, "giving a home to a rescue animal is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have". However, they warn: "It is important to know and feel that you are ready to take on the commitment of another life, a life that will be totally dependent on you for up to 15 years." Or just five, if the mangy mutt in question answers to the name Becks"

Nobody rips their stars like the UK print...amazing...

I love how the SF Giants are now off the hook with the worst contract of all-time... and it only took 10 days. This story is crazy. Seriously, didn't he want to come to L.A. and Posh was Hollywood-crazy? Apparently the MLS doesn't know the concept of "leverage". Unbelievable.

I would have made it the pick of the day if I could have. Sorry Jimbo.

The move is all positive from my point of view. MLS will be on the frot page of the sports page and even maybe the front page of the paper in the middle of August. The need this from a marketing standpoint. Do I think now there will be a flood of players now but I know that a few more older mid level players should make the jump

Remember this isn't the MLS paying him. I believe it's up to LA to pay him under the "Beckham rule". So most that will happen is that LA will have to fold.

Ok. Question for the Soccer Group. If the MLS is stuggling how does one afford a contact that is 5 years 50 mill? Are there good TV or Advertising contracts? Is attendence that good?

Im not familiar with soccer financially so Im not sure now they can affort this. Who owns the LA team?

I believe that MLS might be using some ENRON accounting here. I believe they are banking on the "Beckham brand" which will increase there revenue so they can afford the signing. I also think they now they cannot pay him all of the money so it will be deferred and he will make up for that in endorsements. He is the face of MLS and that alone is worth 250$ or so LA and the MLS believe.

Yeah but 50 mill a year? There is no player in sports worth that much.

Well except Jay Fiedler (Insert Train song Here)

No player is worth more than about 7.75$ an hour for playing a kids game but come on that's not the world we live in.

so who has the best commute from hell story? Here is mine.

Left work yesterday at 3:15. Got home at 9pm. Counted 33 cards from Redmond to Fdub in ditches or abandoned

Trip included parking the Charger 2 miles from home and walking the rest of the way. I felt like I needed a Tauntaun to get home last night

Did anyone make it to the office today or is everyone working from home (Except Pemcoians)

I'm at work... probably the only one. We haven't heard from Devo yet. Speaking of Devo... he always reminds me of Zombies... maybe because he and Ryan Hoffman can't stop talking aobut them all of the time. But anyhoo, The Latino Review got a hold of a new Zombie flick by Robert Rodriguez coming out next year. Thought ya'll would like to read up on it.

Sorry to hear about the traffic woes for Goose and CTown...it took me an hour yesterday to go from Fremont to W. Seattle...I know...minor compared Goose's story...

I've been enjoying doing some typing from the Lodge today and more important I've enjoyed "Bond" month on Comcast DVR...finished up "Live and Let Die" this morning...(one of the worst...but could be the best theme song)...currently on "Man with a Golden Gun", which I think could be the most underrated Bond film ever...Hervé Villechaize (midgets make everything better, he was the greatest midget of all time)Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland and Maud Adams (two top 10 Bond Girls)...and made excellent when compared to Live and Let Die...
