Lodge expansion, The Whale, Nigerian drug running and post industrial revolution western European imperialism and other thoughts from the Train
This lodge expansion reminds me of the NHL circa the late 90’s… I just hope we don’t water down the lodge with teams like Columbus and Atlanta… I have faith Shawn will be able to step up and uncork a few slap shots from the red line. Speaking of the NHL I miss the Whale; I was passing buy a store the other day and saw a man wearing a Whale jersey. This immediately brought me back to NHL live 94 where I took the Whale on a quest for the cup with a guy named Ulf Sammuelson. It was a beautiful thing seeing my Whale; the lowest revenue team in the league take on and beat the mighty Jagr, Lemiux lead penguins; there is something to be said about a franchise whose home town is Hartford. I can’t even tell you where it is on a map. But I can tell you that they played at the Hartford Civic Center (think high school gym expect smaller) they had the sweetest jerseys in the NHL and should never have moved to Carolina. What this has to do with anything I don’t know but I had to share my thoughts. A part of me died after that... A small part but a part none the less.
So, I have been listening to the Sam Alito hearings this week on NPR (I think Jayne wants to throw my radio threw the wall because of this)… Let me tell you I could never imagine being under a microscope like that. No matter how you feel about the guy he’s got guts for being grilled for 7 hours a day for 5 days. I would love to see a congress men have to be grilled like that prior to every election campaign. This guy has had to recall things he did when he was in college. I can’t remember what I did an hour ago. I understand that he is going for arguably the second highest position in all the land but man alive… the dude is going to be confirmed. He is like a wall stoning all questions thrown at him... He’s definitely not my choice but what can I do about it except vote in ’08. This also taught me that I know nothing about law and the legal system.
Mr. Eko just became a house hold name last night... if you didn’t catch LOST last night then you are either a loser or in Vegas(making you exempt). Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is an amazing actor. I never saw OZ on HBO but have heard through the lodge that he was awesome in that and I don’t doubt it. The man exudes emotion. I felt his heartache and his trouble past. I was blown away by his performance and this is just TV I am talking about here. Is there anything more compelling and heart wrenching then a storylines that includes the continent of Africa? I’m sure there is but with movies like Amistad, Hotel Rwanda and The Constant Gardner you realize that place is like the Wild West with Warlords and dictators and carved up countries still reeling from post industrial revolution western European imperialism. See the movie Shaka Zulu or Breaker Morant if you don’t know what I am talking about better yet read a book. Lost really surprised me last night with its strong back story and return to the element of the supernatural. We can talk about this for days but why and how does a plane from Nigeria and up in the south pacific? What is with the monster? Ideas anyone?
Not sure if anyone cares about any of this but these were just some ramblings I had milling around in my head, nothing profound or shocking just ideas and thoughts

I love the Whale jerseys (the uniform history link was a good find, Train). But unfortunately, thanks to my growing up in Seattle, I have no NHL knowledge having just learned what "icing" was a couple of years ago.
In fact, thanks to my wife being an ex-Ice Skater, I know more about Ice Skating than Ice Hockey. Sad, I know. But the sport just doesn't do much for me. Maybe it's the low scoring, but it's probably more about the lack of a hometown team since I love Futbol (Soccer), having grown up playing the sport, and in Soccer the scoring is just as low yet I can sit through a match with tons more interest than a Hockey game.
So you know what a triple sow-cow is then Joe?
Hockey is much like the NBA - I dont really watch unless it is the playoffs or the Lanch are on TV. It is very much an aquired tast. Once you really have the basics down it is easy to follow and quite entertaining. When you get a chance sometime watch a little hockey night in Canada saturday nights on CBUT (channel 99). The best coverage you can find. You might enjoy it.

Good call on Africa storylines by the way. I love films about Africa, but don't forget Cry Freedom (my parents made me watch this heartbreaking film when I was in 6th grade to teach me about racism), Black Hawk Down, or The Power Of One.
But man, even with the bloodshed and struggle I'd love to visit Africa's beauty some day (one of my lifetime goals + the music is transcendant, highlighted by a great song by Paul Simon of Graceland titled African Skies).
Black Hawk Down - Possible the most underrated Ridley Scott film. It has some of the best camera work and action pieces I have seen. With the exception of having Josh Hartnet in the lead this movies is a solid 5 star film. Great cast (Bana, Glenn, Sizemore, Obi-Wan to name a few). I recommend the Book too, by Mark Bowden. Quality read. He makes you think you are reading a straight novel, he is great with his narrative.
