I liked V

Last night, 7:45pm showing...

"This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V. " ~V

It was good. The comic is more poignant, the movie is still daring. Viva La Revolution!

Melissa and I saw 'V' last Sunday.....we thoroughly enjoyed it. She was being nice by going with me because she didn't really want to see it, but she said she enjoyed it "way more" than she originally thought. Good flick.

Then....we leave the Cinerama and walk towards the car....and the first guy we see walking down the street is wearing a Vanderbilt baseball cap....with a big, fat 'V' on it. Very spooky.....

I'm getting deep watch out.
The symbology of religion is so prevalent in all the Wachowski brothers films. As a student of this and taking into consideration of the full trilogy of the Matrix films they were retelling the theology of Gnosticism - which was the melding of Platonic thought and Christianity.

In V for Vendetta the features of Jesus, especially taken from the Book John exist as well. V standing in the fire alludes to: "He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire." Then he became an instrument the salvation of from oppression. Also, the story of the lesbian internee who relates that her grandmother said, "God is in the rain." After which Natalie Portman had to go outside much like Jesus and the Samaritan woman where he offers, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." Natalie, or Evey releases herself to the rain and the water and her true self.

The overall thematic is much more than political and more theological. Our lives are being suppressed and we choose it ourselves and he (V) makes us recognize our humanity and connectedness to something more stripping away who we are and identify with. Especially at two points involving Evey's family after her breakdown. Much like from Matthew disassembling these connections and abandoning family for a greater sense of involvment of all: "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

Could they have been any more pointed about their criticism of the Bush administration? I particularly liked the "Coalition of the Willing" poster with the swastika on it in Gordon's basement. Huh, wonder what they're trying to say...

Well, it followed the graphic novel pretty closely. And the comic book was written in 1983... so I think stretching it to Bush specifically is a feat. But stretching it to any controlling administration is easy...

After watching Good Night & Good Luck a couple of nights ago, it's eirily familiar how McCarthy and Bush have violated citizens basic human rights to privacy & freedoms in a time of "war".
