Sayonara Sonics?

Breaking news......the Seattle Sonics have been sold to a group from Oklahoma City. It's still too early to know if they are gone for sure...but I thought that the Lodge should be among the first to know.

I'm not jumping to conclusions.....but, I can't believe this is happening......

Stay tuned for updates.

This would be devestating to lose an NBA franchise. I know there are many that don't care, but when a city loses a major sport, it's hard to get it back.

I'm holding out hope in the last line of the story as it's currently written: It was not immediately known if the Sonics would move to Oklahoma.

This would put Seattle on par with Kansas City, St. Louis & San Diego. Lame.

I hear ya on holdin' out hope....but I'm afraid that's all it is. According to the comments coming out of the governor's office, it appears as though the Sonics ownership were never really looking for a solution to their problem. They just wanted out.

put this on your next speaking engagement Schultz...visionary, millionaire, man who killed the only pro sports franchise with a title in the Emerald City...well this is good news for Dawg and Blazer fans...the NW has a new "local" team...I can now watch the B. Roy era unfold w/o any Green & Gold interruption...everything is proceeding as I have foreseen

Good news is that this article's source indicated the new ownership group plans to keep the Sonics and Storm in the Seattle region. A boy can dream, can't he!?!

Of course, the lease on the KeyArena with the city of Seattle lasts until 2010, so there wouldn't be any movement until then. Unless Stern starts throwing around his mob-like muscle to the city.

Seattle without basketball? That would make us like a third tier city!!! We might as well trade names and call ourselves Topeka, WA.

honestly, I may be happy that Schultz is going to get painted as the bad guy in this...but I'm not happy to see a Franchise pull up the stakes and leave town...however...I'm going to be more pissed when the outgoing ownership group tries to pin this on the people of Washington for not giving them the backing the felt they were "owed"...maybe we can convice the Yakima Sun Kings to play a couple of home games at the key...

My buddy just emailed me and said that the deal only requires that they stay in Seattle for ONE YEAR.....then it's gonzo for sure.....

Nice, no more games to interupt my ELP watching.

No, I whole heartedly echo the statement that this is devistating to lose a franchise. I don't forsee the NBA wanting to even take a look up here in the future. Stern has painted the city as the bad guy in the arena deal plus with the Vancouver franchise nosediving seems like the NBA only has a need for one NW team.

Personally I don't care if they leave since I am not a fan of the NBA. I would hope the NHL might take a look at expansion but they won't unless the Key is renovated, ironic huh...

I would say we were the Topeka, WA Pittsburgh does fine with out an NBA team.

let's work on getting the Sounders bumped up to MLS...we'll build a Soccer-Only stadium were the Key is now...

Or just put some money into Memorial Stadium. That would fit the Seattle Budget and it would double as a nice field for the urban HS teams.

Nice press conference going right now....."it is not our intention to move these teams from Seattle".

I love how all the talk is about how much the Sonics owners have lost every year......and yet, Howie Schultz bought the Sonics in 2001 for $200 million....and just sold them in 2006 for $350 million.

You do the math.

Is the bright side to all this that Wally Walker doesn't work for the Sonics anymore?

I think I'm gonna cry! (Tears of joy for the end of the Wallyworld era)

It's just too bad that it took actually losing the team to get Wallyworld "fired". Now he is officially associated with the death of Sonics basketball and a dark day in Seattle sports history.

look at the bright side CTown...this means David Locke will no longer be on the Seattle airwaves...there is a SportsRadio God...and he does answer prayers...

I hear ya on Locke...but damn....still sucks pretty bad.

Not sure how the next year will go now....with the new ownership group trying to keep up appearances in getting a deal done while they quietly fire up the homecoming rally back in Oklahoma City......
