Observations From The Pearl #5

Round 5. Fight!

Outlaws
This was one of my favorite episodes from the entire season. Sawyer is haunted by a boar that may have a connection with a man he killed....
This was another of those great episodes that weren’t really so much about the mythology as they were about characters. I’d like to see more of these kinds of episodes in Season 3.
This episode really reminded me of something that’s slowly, and some what inevitably, gone away. It’s the idea that literally anything was possibly on the island. Maybe the boar really is a ghost of the man Sawyer killed. The more things get explained in a very logical manor, the more I feel the show loses just a little piece of its charm. Of course, on the flip side, if they didn’t explain stuff people would just get frustrated and stop watching. Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't type of scenario.
I absolutely love the scene between Sawyers and Jack’s dad. The more I think about it the more I start becoming convinced that Jack’s father has some kind of a connection with the island. I have no clue in what capacity, but I just can’t shake the feeling (especially after Jack hearing his father’s voice on the broken intercom on the season 3 premiere).

“...In Translation”

Its right around this episode that Jin started becoming cool for me. He started off the series as a character I didn’t really like all that much. But by midway through season 2 he suddenly become one of my favorite characters. He became the islands “Chewie”.
I love that when Jin goes to beat up the government guy that Hurley’s on TV after winning the lottery.
Nothing really on the unsolved mysteries front here....

Numbers

4,8,15, 16,23,42
After this episode people (myself included) started looking out for those numbers everywhere in the series. To be honest, I kind of hoped we’d never find out.
Apparently the “Lost Experience” online game gives us something of the story behind the numbers (this info is supposedly not going to show up in the show, so it’s not a spoiler). Their numbers from something called the Valenzetti Equation. The numbers supposedly have something to do with either the end of the human race or are supposed to save the human race or something...I think it’s kind of dumb.
The writers at one point said that there was no reason behind the numbers pre-planned (although the strange coincidences were). The fact that there now scrambling for a reason is a bit lame to me. Especially because the writers are not be the ones putting together the game.
I guess it’s for the best that the numbers have faded out of the scope of the show. It’s probably for the best....

Deus Ex Machina
Great episode. I love the Locke flashback stuff (with his evil as hell father) and the Sawyer needing glasses stuff is priceless (“It looks like someone steamrolled Harry Potter”).
However, what’s the deal with Locke losing the use of his legs? At first he simply loses all feeling, but this slowly devolves into Locke not even able to support his own weight. But once Boone and the plan fall off the cliff, he seems to get full use of his legs back. What’s the deal there?
Locke claims he lost the use of his legs because the island is punishing him and demanding he complete a task. With the way the show has evolved, that’s not going to be the case. Whatever it is, something happened. It hasn’t been referred to since this episode and I really hope they just don’t forget about it. They made too big of a deal about to simply walk away from it. Time will tell.
And another thing: What's up with these crazy ass visions everyone seems to have? Locke has a big one in this episode (finding the nigerian plane). Multiple characters over the course of the last 2 seasons have had visions that have lead them to finding major revelations on the island. Can't be a coincidence. Really. It can't be. At least I really, really hope not.

So what did everyone think of Episode 2 for season 3?

It was almost just a filler. Nothing really new or profound. I did like the ending with the Sox winning the series... Ties in Jacks Father.

Sun just went up a notch in my book.. Hot and Spicy Kim Chee, she is...

Jin, has the potential to breakout this season.

I hate the others - they are now just creepy. I liked them when they were more lord of the flies.

Sawyer is gonna get beat up alot. and Freckles well she tastes like stawberries but I think we all figured that already.

Here's a little geek trivia for you:

That episode of "Lost" was written by Drew Goddard, who was one of the writers on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

The "tastes like strawberries" line is actually almost verbatum from an episode of "Buffy" he wrote back in 2002.

Okay...as you were.

A little more geekness,

When Jin went to "Deliver a message" to the bald dude that was sleeping with his wife, did you notice what hotel room he was staying in?

"1516"

I think that marks to first time we've seen the numbers this season.

I agree it was a lot of filler.

I think the most interesting point was that Ben said he was on this Island "All of his life"

Sun did move up a notch in the Hottie-O-Meter...she has not moved since her bikini beach scene last season.

Jayne. You are a true geek, I mean who really cares about Buffy 2002?

Did you guys know that when Jin said "I dont know what I would do without you" to Sun it was almost verbatum of something that was said in over 50,000 other movies where someone was worried about losing a loved one?

Sorry about that moment of geekness, but it was to coincidental not to share
