NFL Free Agency...and my 2 cents
Gooses take on the NFL Yearly spending spree.
March is here and while that means college Basketball for most, for John Clayton and Goose, it means NFL Free Agency. Its like Xmas for the NFL. New Players coming and going. Daniels Broiler in Bellevue becomes the place to be in Seattle when wooing Free Agents to join the Hawks.
Also this time of year my buddy Ryan makes his yearly trip to Vegas, where he places my futures bet for the upcoming season.
There is always at top 5 or 10 players that will make the rounds in the NFL. I’ll give you my take on the recent signings.
Lets start with the hawks big prize and then I will break down the Lodges teams
Seahawks
Patrick Kerney. I like the signing. This is a workhorse DE with outstanding physical ability. You may look at his sack production and ask what gives? Well Sacks don’t always make the player. He had 14 in 2004 when Brady Smith was opposite him in ATL. Both had double digit sacks. The next year the Atlanta DL was plagued by injuries and Kerney saw a ton of double teams. I think he is a great piece in a defensive end rotation of Wistrom and Fisher.
Also look closely at the Daniel Graham negotiations. If you guys remember the 2003 Draft. The Hawks wanted Graham at the #22 pick. NE took him at 21 and the Hawks traded down and to Jeremy Stevens at #27. What goes around comes around.
Broncos
I like the Dre Bly trade, giving them two solid CB’s after the death of Williams in the offseason. What Im not to sure of is the Travis Henry. He is ok, but I don’t think he is a top tier 5mill a year RB. I’ll bet they could have traded and got Willis Mgehee. for less. They need a good Vet QB behind Cutler.
Cowboys
So far I think the Cowboys have made the biggest blunder in FA signing Leonard Davis to a 50 million dollar contract. The man has poor footwork and not a bulldozer. Yet you are paying him Walter Jones/Jonathon Ogden $$$. He stunk for Arizona. I could be wrong, but he looks to be the bust of the year. (And the Redskins thought of signing him as well, but for way less) The Brad Johnson signing was solid. Good #2 behind the sure handed Tony Romo.
Redskins
I really liked London Fletcher as a player, especially in 2002-03 when he was in his prime. Yes he is a solid Middle LB who knows Gregg Williams but again they overpaid for an aging veteran. Welcome back Fred Smoot. You “Love Boated” your way out of Minnesota.
Some other big moves in the topsy-turvy (note: 1st ever Lodge use of the term topsy-turvy) world of NFL Free Agency
The Patriots signed LB Adalius Thomas The deal is for $37.5 million for five years
This is the granddaddy of all signings and may have landed NE back in the super bowl. This man is a STUD!!!!
After visiting Seattle and looking at Cleveland, free-agent guard Kris Dielman opted to re-sign with San Diego
You got used Seattle. Get over it
The 49ers have signed CB Nate Clements to the biggest contract ever given to a defensive player -- eight years, $80 million, including $22 million guaranteed
Scratch Leonard Davis as the worst signing. If his name aint Champ Bailey, he aint worth 80 million
The Miami Dolphins and LB Joey Porter have reached agreement on a five-year, $32.5 million deal that includes $20 million worth of guaranteed money.
Too much guaranteed money for a big mouth who will not play well out of the Dick Lebeau defensivesystem.
Free-agent quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo visited the Cleveland Browns and is scheduled to visit the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers later this week
Good for Marques. I hope he finds a good home outside of Raider Hell
Free-agent RB T.J. Duckett is in Detroit visiting with Lions. Duckett is scheduled to visit the New York Jets on Wednesday and the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday
Hmmmm Duckett in a Seahawks Uniform? That’s a solid Veteran backup to Alexander, plus a good 4th and 1 bowling ball.
Thomas Jones Traded to the New York Jets.
Ahhh TJ. Life may be greener in uniform for the Jets, but you’ll miss a solid Chicago Offensive Line.
Jeff Garcia signed with Tampa Bay
The Bucs have the #3 overall pick, a solid defense and are going to be improved. I placed a futures bet on them on Friday in Vegas at 75-1. (Before they signed Garcia)
Drew Bennett signs with Rams.
This is an interesting signing. A 6-5 Wide Receiver vs Kelly Herndon. This matchup does not favor the Hawks Defense

First off it's good to have the Goose back in the mix. Seems like you've been away.
Solid post, Goose. I dug it.
I agree with you on the Dre Bly trade and the best part about it was that Denver really didn’t give much up for him. I think that Foster and Bell are very replaceable. Now we have two of the best shut down corners in the game. It’s just to bed we had to trade for him in the first place… RIP DW!!
Travis Henry was a stretch but I do like his one – cut running style that suits the Denver Offense. I think we will be a solid running back for Denver though they need to pick a running back and stick with him I not a fan of the RB carousel that Shanahan has been running. A) it doesn’t work and B) it messes up my FF draft.
I was shocked to see Tom Jones go to the Jets? Cause from what I see Benson isn’t that great and his is prone to injury.
Write it down – Pat Kerney is the new Grant Wistrom.
I have been away. Did a little travelling and been engulfed in some projects at work.
Plus I was really pissed at 2.0
(Actually im not...but I can see his response)
"WHY? WHAT DID I DO???"
Mark it boys. The 1st Lodge bet was the Tampa Bay Bucs for $10 at 75-1 odds.
Newsflash. Part of my travels had a stay at the Quinault Beach Indian Casino in Ocean Shores and I learned how to play a game that rivals Blackjack in its profitability...Yes. Goose now has learned how to play Craps. And Goose likes.....Im not ready for the Tables in Vegas yet...but its getting close
D.Graham would be a HUGE signing for the Angry Seagull...another member of the NE-SEA trade/FA pipeline...
oh...and Brad Johnson named his first born son Maximus...just thought that warrants mentioning...
I'd also love D.Graham in a Seahawks uniform... and I knew that Seattle wanted to draft him 4 yrs ago, but I'd forgotten about NE trading up in the Draft. That's why we keep Goose around.
Great recap, Goose. You even brought color to the Lodge. I agree that the Nate Clements deal was moronic. "What's that? We are finally out of our salary cap crisis due to overspending in the 90's? Sweet. Let's overspend for the 6th best corner in the NFL!"
Who placed the bet? Ryan? Did the Lodge approve of the picking of TB? I have questions.
D. Graham comes home to the Rocky Mountain air.... Yet, he doesn't give a hometown discount... Sorry Hawks fans... Maybe Mark Bruhner is still avaliable.
Hey...if Denver wants to overpay, there's not a whole lot we can do. Ruskell has shown that he's not willing to pay someone more than he thinks their worth (I'm looking at you Bavasi). I respect that face that we didn't get into a crazy bidding war that got out of hand.
How quickly you turn on him once he doesn't sign.
5 years for 30 mill which only 15 mill is guaranteed isn't that bad from my orange and blue speckled glasses.
I'm not turning on him, I totally wanted him in a hawks jersey...but that is a huge contract for a tight end and I would have rather seen the Hawks walk away then try and beat that contract.
Bavasi... somehow he's always the one to blame. He's like the Newman of the Lodge.
Joe. I made a last second judgement call. Do you have a problem with that?
FYI in Free agency
Seattle free-agent tight end Jerramy Stevens visited the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday.
Free agent WR Joe Horn still is in Atlanta, on a visit he kicked off Monday night. (I put this here because this makes Atlanta a much better team....competing for the NFC Championship)
Why don't you just take my 20$ and flush it down the toilet Goose... That seem like it will get the same result.
Tell you what Train.
Everyone gets their $20 back (all 3 of you), Im scrapping the whole thing and you can Flush your money yourself however you see fit.
Deals off. End of story. Checks in the mail. Goose is done with the project and the Vegas idea in general.
I tried, you whined, it over
Calm down there Chief. I think you might need a timeout... I was joking big fella... I wouldn't have given you the 20$ if I didn't have faith.
Deal is still off and im shipping the money back.
It was a bad idea to get people to to organize and agree on something like this
Plus it will never get off the ground and whatever money was made we'd never be able to coordinate the trip.
Money is on its way back
Goose, you are the football expert and I'm quite alright with the money on the very good 75-1 odds for TB.
I just was curious if Ryan made the call or you. I'm confident in your football knowledge... but Ryan... not so much. Misunderstanding. Don't go ripping the arms off of anyone, big guy.
No misunderstandings or apologies. I always make the call, Ryan called me from Vegas with my options. I place several futures bets for myself (MLB and NFL) and 1 for the Lodge
Im picking up the $10 and adding it to my own bet (I already put $10 on the Bucs for myself). That way the Lodge money is returned free and clear
If someone else wants to pick up the project, its all good.
Hear me when I tell you that I am done with it.
Like Hans and Frans used to say...
"Listen to me now and believe me later"
Wow. I thought you'd know that we were kidding. Now you're all hot and bothered. I'm still on with the project... otherwise I wouldn't have given you my $20. I trust in the Goose.
Guys...don't fight. This is a day of mourning. Of all days, don't fight on the day of Captain America's passing!
Claudio Reyna died?...WTF?...nihilo sanctum estne?
Actually, I was waiting for someone to make an easy rider reference...
