The Movie Poop

Movies so far this summer have been pretty fine. We had Die Hard, Transformers, and even Harry Potter. As much as I might have expected these to be kind of crap, they left me with a fragrant contentment.

The Crap
Unfortunately, I saw a preview for some real crap and was asking myself "Who laid that sh*t!?" Maybe you're just as baffled as me, but the new film Stardust reeks of buttery popcorn/hotdog/burrito waste from last year's Mordor geek crew.
Never has there been an adventure quite like this....where Robert De Niro wastes a lot of time when he could have been doing something different. Let's not forget Michelle Pfeiffer + Claire Danes = a step closer to the B-list because of this film.

This film is based on the Stardust novella from comic writer Neil Gaiman, who otherwise is brilliant as a writer. (see: American Gods) Yet, Hollywood is getting major lazy or way too fantasy focused lately. It feels like Baron Munchausen, meets Witches, meet midgets, meets Crap from Tolkien. Basically, I dare you to watch this movie and attempt to like it. Stardust Trailer

The Sh*t
In the vein of things much calmer, wittier, and geekier is Rocket Science. More reality-based than Rushmore, less slapstick than Napoleon Dynamite, and a hint of puberty's nostalgia make this movie THE SH*t for this weekend.

Maybe I just relate more to being the nervous wreck in the debate contest while trying to look cool with the girl I have a crush on. (I made the Edmonds District Debate finals, missed my time slot because of gf.)

Its probably just an easy relief from blockbuster mayhem action, and the film has a Korean guy in it. Which makes everything better in movies these days.

Future Sh*t

VOLTRON

That's right, I said, "VOLTRON".

New Regency is close to a deal with the Mark Gordon Company to adapt "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" into a live-action film. Gordon has been developing the pic, based on the popular 1980s Japanese animated TV series, comicbooks and toy line, with Justin Marks penning the script.

Should the deal close, project would be one of the company's more high-profile efforts since Robert Harper took over as chairman-CEO of Regency Filmed Entertainment earlier this year. Interest in the property hit a high after "Transformers" turned into a box office juggernaut, raking in nearly $300 million to date.

Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico. Five ragtag survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders. (Source)

Everybody knows future apocalypse storlines make for ultimate movies. If the Road Warrior says so, it has to be true.

Although, I do worry about Right Wing backlash at Tranformers & Voltron's renewed popularity.

While I can see why someone wouldn't necessarily like 'Stardust', I have to disagree with you. I thought it was one of the best films I've seen all year actually (Rotten Tomatoes is currently listing it as certified fresh with a 75% rating).

Also...see Superbad! Holy @#$%! I dare say it was funnier than Seth Rogan's other flick 'Knocked Up'.

Superbad! i will try.

If pirates vs. witches was what you saw, then mayve we saw different movies...

The flick had a similar feel for me to the Princess Bride (though Stardust is darker and not as quotable). That's really not going to be anyones cup of tea, but I do think you sell it short. As far as fantasy flicks go, I'd take this over Narnia or the Potter flicks.

WOW. Thats a bold statement considering I saw Don Corleone as pirate. I just don't think I can accept that.

I once saw Robert De Niro doing a Shakespeare reading from Hamlet on tv. Elizabethan English and Brooklyn do not match. Admittedly, the film and story may be good. I love Neil Gaiman, but I just do not feel the casting of this film.

Its sort of like someone casting Freddie Mercury to play Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. (sort of awesome, but mistmatched none the less.)

It's funny because I actually enjoyed the hell out of Deniro's performance. I just really got a sense that he was having fun with the role. Maybe I'm just so used to seeing him phone in performances lately. I thought it was a fun role.
And I think with a role like that you can break type. I mean we say the word pirate, but was are talking about a pirate who captains a flying ship and catches lightning in a fantasy world. You're not designated to a particular mold in that scenario.

And I think your video game logic must mean that the The Phantom Menace must be the greatest film ever, because there's been dozens of games released around that steaming turd of a film.

uh...you know what a MMORPG is right? It's not like D&D (though there is a Serenity RPG as well).

I was so much more content talking about Stardust...Serenity could have made hundereds of millions of dollars and we'd still be bickering. I think I just cringe at the thought of it being compare to that horrible riddick flick.

Actually the most recent info I've heard is that it won't be free (I seem to recall though that there might be a demo-type thing that will be free though).

Anyway...

Superbad is an awesome film & y'all should see it in theathers (Yes, that means paying to see a movie, Train. Trust me, it's worth it)

Actually, Warner Brothers picked up the rights to make a Thundercats movie back in June. Some guy named Paul Sopocy is writing the script. No director attached.
