Caution Portuguese

Just another unfortunate reason most Americans can't get behind Futbol.....

LONDON, Oct 25 (SW) – In a statement issued by FIFA by the World Cup referees and medical officials it was established that a staggering 58% of all those players who were seen to be rolling around in agony were not actually injured.

This figure that was arrived at had been confirmed by chief medical officer Jiri Dvorak at the World Cup after medical staff had to report on the injuries during each match.

The most likely reason given was tactics.

The average number of genuine injuries in a match had dropped from 2.7 to 2.3 per match from 2002 to 2006.

The worst injury was that of Michael Owen who suffered a cruciate knee injury.

The Lodge lays blame on the shoulders of the Portuguese soccer federation and there motto of "have you flopped today"

I love FIFA...thanks for the stat...but...what exactly are you going to do about it? Everyone knows, but nobody knows how to enforce it...I say start enforced 3-5 minute sideline outages for injuries...if it's a genuine injury, it'll take that amount of time to get back in the game

Maybe even bring in replay to look at diving and other on field acts.

Why not have a penalty box for diving, you sit out for 5 min. Excessive diving can get your team an automatic red...

OR....they can institute an immediate retaliatory action policy that allows an opposing player that is the target of the "flop" to get one clean blow at the "flopper" if he refuses to leave the game due to the "injury" that he just received. This policy could be called the "swift kick in the junk" policy and I think, could actually deter players from being the pussies that they appear to be.

Just my .02

I can get behind that policy.

it's the black eye on the game...fortunately not too prevelant in Premiership or Champions League...which doesn't explain why the WC allowed so much of it...

From an outsider looking in on the WC all I can say is "WOW". I didn't realize that so many people had received that type of training from Karl Malone. Nice additional income source outside of truck driving for that guy.....

all I ask CTown is you reserve that WC was given a black eye by Southern Europe where they teach that style of futbol...completely unacceptable in the North and totally intolerable in the Isles...oh well...every game has bad elements to it...deal with it

Hey....I'm dealing with it....but as someone that is still trying to "learn" the nuances of the game, it makes it difficult to watch games on the World stage that had so much BS going on.

This just reinforces the fact that I need to check out the Champions league games I guess.

Set your TV to record the Champs Games next tues and weds. I am sure the Barcalona v. Chelsea game will be on. It should be a nice game to start with. You should really enjoy the quality of play.

We can always discuss the game in the lodge the next day if any questions arise.

Well that and the fact it is being played in Spain and they speak Spanish but that just my initial thoughts.

Yeah but this is not the WC and the appeal for the game in ESPN's eyes is Latin America.... That's just my third thought.

My fourth thought is that we should discuss these matchups in a preliminary session over beers and bowling on Monday night at West Seattle Bowl......I just found out that I don't have class on Monday.....
