The Great Gatsby
So there was a new addition to the Elenbaas Family over the weekend, as Jenny and I got a puppy. His name is Gatsby. Gatsby is a 10 week old Pug. He's a purebred, and specifically bred with smaller pugs to be a "pocket pug" and will grow to be about 70-80% smaller than normal pugs.
The wife has loved pugs forever. Jenny even has "pug-dar", intuitive radar when pugs are nearby. It's pretty creepy. So basically it wasn't a matter of if we'd end up getting a pug... but when. And the when is now. (By the way, I'm open to all training tips and suggestions. Because the little guy is a handful. Especially tips on how to make a schedule around 2 working owners. Any help is more than welcome.)
Why the name Gatsby? Well, Jenny's favorite book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, thus the name. I'm calling the puppy "Little G" or "Gat" so he feels more ghetto and doesn't forget where he's from. Of course, if I wanted a little thug dog, we could've gone with naming him "Ron Artest" or "Steven Jackson". It's not too late to rename him, is it?

dog insanely cute. great success.
wow...first time I've ever seen a baby Pug...congrats big guy and welcome to the club...shoot me an email with problems and I'll see if I can't provide a little insight...if I give you no other piece of advice, remember this: "60% of the time, Crate Training works 100%"...seriously, go out tonight and start working the crate training...it's golden delicous...
Crating is a must. Start them early. As for the Thug name, why couldnt you call him Nate Newton or Michael Irvin?
Ya know, he kinda looks like Nate Newton. I figure I'd have to change the name in the first couple of weeks here or Gat will start to have a bit of a split-personality or something... and since Jenny has had her heart set on Gatsby for a while, it's about a 0.0001 percent chance I'll get my way on this one.
This could turn into a Top 5... Top 5 Thug Athletes To Name Your Dog After...
My list would be:
5. Tiger Woods - okay, he's not crazy in the least. But naming your dog Tiger is pretty funny in a weird twistest way. Plus, he's the greatest golfer ever.
4. Jon Daly - Ah, now we're talking crazy! And pugs kinda look like the rolly poley Daly.
3. Nate Newton - It really does have a good ring to it.
2. Ron Artest - You could call him the nickname Ron-Ron... #1 crazy NBA player.
1. Tyson - Yep, craziest athlete ever. And it's the best dog name to boot.
cute cute cute...he'll have to come over and play with Kuma and Panda as soon as we move to Capi Hill.
tips (especially on little dogs in small spaces with very busy parents):
1. totally agree with the above - crate training is a must. he'll whine for a few nights but don't give in. he should sleep in his own crate...they are den animals.
2. doggie litter works great when you can't be home to let out the little one. "second nature" is the brand we use.
3. remember who's boss. you initiate playing, you walk out the door first, you sit and eat on a higher level.
4. love and kisses and lots of playdates with the johnson's kids.
Joe - Beyond cute, and the name is PERFECT. JEN has tremendous taste. Crate training is a must. Let him cry. Close your ears and remember a sweet dog is a good dog, but a trained dog is a great dog. No need to puppy train - a total waste of time. Just worry about the crate until he's about 9 mos old, then go to training. Trust me. I love him already.
Train Gatsby to sniff out the undead within a kilometer vicinity.
One other thing... We took Cash to daycare two to three days a week until he was about 9 mos old. It pooped him out, and it allowed us to have time for ourselves in the evening, otherwise we were consumed with walking, playing, etc. Try the Barking Lounge
joe.
i just heard about little gatsby.
um...precious.
i have had a little pug for about 14 months now...lyle.
he's the most wonderful addition to my life - EVER.
i've never heard of "pocket pugs" before, but love the idea...although a mini-pug might be too cute for me to physically handle.
are you crate training him? crate training has saved my life with lyle. the great thing about my life is that lyle can come to the office with me...so i haven't had to deal with the whole "having a dog while working" thing.
anyway...i'm happy for you guys. hope all is well...
