Sorry, Venkman, I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought

So maybe 'Top Gun' in 70mm wasn't for you. There's only so much Kenny Loggins a man can take.

Maybe seeing 'Blade Runner: The Final Cut' on the big screen didn't sound all that enticing. Especially considering you could be watching 'Universal Soldier' at home on DVD.

But starting next week...there's just no excuses.

Ghostbusters in 70mm!!!

Show times are:
November 4, 6, 11 & 13
Sunday shows are at noon. Tuesday shows are at 8.

If you didn't love this movie when you were a kid there was something deeply wrong with you. This is one of the all time greats, and is one of the most quotable movies in the history of cinema.

Off topic....

After seeing 'Blade Runner: The Final Cut', I can highly reccomend seeing it at Cinerama. If only because it's really a film that needs to be seen on a big screen. This film truly is Ridley Scott's masterpiece. I was really struck this time by the camerawork. Every single shot is perfectly framed and composed, I think you could spend a year studying and analyzing every single shot. Really, really worth seeing.

I recommend a Lodge gathering for either the 6th or the 13th...whose with me?

and I'm pissed I'm stuck in SJ this week, its almost like I'm being punished for enjoying Ridley's "A Good Year"...that will be the last time I get burned by French Vineyards...

I can probably make either the 6th or the 13th...but I'll have to confirm.

If you are bored in SJ, there is always the scintillating Carling Cup action available on LiveFooty TV!

.....ha.

Well, I will be there tonight regardless. I'll be the guy in the Firefly t-shirt reading 'how to pick up chicks'.
If Train's there he'll be standing next to me, reading over my shoulder taking notes waiting for the appropriate time to ask for money.
If Goose is there, he'll be proudly sporting his flash gordon t-shirt pelting me in the back of the head with skittles
If Jimbo's there he'll be the drunk guy attempting to get into a wrestling fight with the Dude occasionally muttering 'Gotta sweep the leg Johnny!'
Seatown won't be there...he'll be drunk and stumbling outside Qwest field, screaming 'How can you not get half a yard?!? SHAUUN!'
Joe will be there in Spirit form ala Obi Wan...only more douche bag-like. And he'll probably be in a patriots jersey (they're inevitably his new favorite team)

Pats Jersey! That's sacralige! I will be there in spirit though. Ghostbusters on the big screen is something I would jump if the opportunity presented itself.

This coming from a guy who if the Lodge had 10+ gathering before the end of the year still would be last on the list of Lodge Gatherings Attended. Pot, meet Kettle. He's Josh Whedon's b!tch, still collects comic books & gives Blade Runner way too much credit than it deserves.

yeah...get your hits in big guy...but there was a Lodge gathering on Saturday morning that the entire world was watching and I didn't see your peroxide top anywhere...and my country was dissapointed with me shortly after my first presidential vote for Nader...

Damn me and my non-soccer watching ways.

And when did reading comic books become a diss? Am I really supposed to feel bad about that?

I was watching the match here thinking of the Lodge.

And no, Casey, you shouldn't feel bad about it. To use a Jimbo line... "I'm gonna be honest with ya"... I've been reading Joe Quesada's Daredevil: Father series at the Border's here in Pasadena when I need a study break and loving it. Also, all your talk about Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men series has me waiting for Book 4 to come out. Yep, I read the first 3. PHEW! It feels good to get that off my chest. Man, I need a drink.

Wow...do you two need a private chat room?...and MCP..."I'm gonna be honest with you..."...don't be a hater...1 Billion viewers WW places you in the minority...despite what ESPN might tell you...

Not saying I'm not in the minority & not trying to be a hater, just saying I don't watch Soccer games on TV. It's not my thing.

I love watching soccer on TV....it's all I have until I can make up an excuse to go to Europe....

There probably won't be a line out to the street this Saturday for the Sunderland/Newcastle matchup though....

you should at least give it a chance one Saturday...that's all I'm saying...I understand your point of view about "Soccer on TV", but if you can watch the current version of the Seahawks on TV you can watch a proper Futbol Match...

Btw...It's really worth seeing Ghostbusters @ Cinerama if you get the chance. It's amazing how many little things you don't really notice when you are just watching a flick at home compared to the big screen.

Just a followup to the Radiohead thing...they say 38 % paid for the record and paid an average of $6. Lets do the math. 38% of 1,200,000 is 456,000 people which ends up being about $2,736,000. Major artists usually only make $1-$2 an album at best. So Radiohead still made more money this way than if they had actually sold 1.2 Million copies through conventional means.

from what I understand the general opinion Radiohead is success...however, no one is certain how this same model would apply to artists with smaller fan bases...

Didn't Prince or the "symbol" try this a while back w/o a record label? I think he charged for this record though...that...and it probably sucked...

Does this mean the death of Easy Street?

I think the death of the record store at least as we know it is imminent. Before coming to insurance land, I was a buyer for Tower Records and in my time there you could really see things starting to change.
(funnily enough I remember having a conversation with a Warner rep in 1999 about the impact of the internet and he literally laughed it off)
I think you hit it on the nail though, Jimbo. The real question is how will this model work for smaller bands.
There's a really cool artist named Saul Williams who just put out a new album produced by Trent Reznor that's doing something similar. You can download a low quality version of the album for free, or you can buy a high quality version for $5.
And speaking of Reznor, he's announed that he is leaving his record label and all signs seem to point that he will do something at least similar to Radiohead with the next Nine Inch Nails record.

Personally, I will always have a great love for record stores, but the fact is the world is only going to get more difficult for them to survive in.

We're still a couple of years away from having to reinvate Easy Street into another skank bar...and the vinyl shopper (me) will always need a place to rummage so it will never go back to the CD warehouses of the early-mid 90s...

is Tower even alive anymore? they always thought very highly of their products....

Wed Nov 07, 03:39:00 PM PST

Tower finally completely went under in 2006. A couple of things really caused it. They couldn't compete with the Best Buy's of the world who undersold major new releases. The internet and MP3's didn't help things and the founders son took over the company and pretty much ran it into the ground.
It really was a franchise that was built on the concept of having the best possible selection, which was great in the real world, but when you can get anything you want on the internet, that ceases to be much of an advantage.

Wed Nov 07, 03:58:00 PM PST
Blogger Unknown said...

Yep, Tower went bankrupt and closed down their operations everywhere at the end of '06.

I've always wondered how Silver Platters stays in business? Does anyone you know shop there? They've always been a mystery to me.

Silver Platters keeps overhead costs low by using indentured servants instead of waged employees.

I think that you won't ever see the small time record store disappear. Years ago they figured out that a large part of their bread and butter was going to be harder to find artists and used cd's and records.

Even though the internet has obviously made it easier to get music faster....people still like perusing the used bins for that bargain cd that they never knew that they wanted....until it was 5.99.
