M's Coaching Vacancies

So the Mariner's need to hire new hitting and pitching coaches. Is it too early to talk about the M's 2006 season? Sweet rumor about Mel Stottlemyre possibly coming home to help out our pitching staff...

So what do you think? I'd love the addition of Mel. He's savy and will bring more experience to the table, pairing with "Grover", experience that the Mariners as an organization haven't seen since "Sweet Lou" was kicking dirt and throwing bases at Safeco Field.

This possible hitting coach doesn't excite me as much, though. The phrase -- "formerly a hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs and the Kansas City Royals" -- doesn't inspire good feelings. Not the best hitting clubs in the past few years.

I guess my thing with baseball compared to other sports is this...how many games does a manager, hitting coach and pitching coach give you compared to your talent...right now the Mariners have talent for about 75-80 wins a year...does Melly Mel push that to 85? and does the addition of a ex-Royal hitting coach then automatically take it back down to 80...point being that as long as Lincoln and Bavasi evaluate talent and keep the current structure of our minor league system in place...the Mariner's will be in a quagmire for decade's to come...the formula for success in MLB is not very complicated; pitching and defense and offensive execution (which does not mean HR's)...last year's drafting of the kid from SC who was scouted as a C- defensive catcher with a B+ bat, shows that they still haven't figured it out...but that's just one hacks opinion

Jimbo, your hacks opinion is right on. This team will always be in the 75-80 win range with the leadership they have. I have faith in Hargrove as a manager. That is at least on thing they have done right in my opion.

But lets but the Baseball talk on the back burner for now. We can heat the stove up again around Feb.

PS... Congrads to The Dude and his White Sox.

One positive about the KC hitting coach is that he's the guy who coached Jermaine Dye when Dye donned the Royal Blue his first couple of years in the league...

Excuse me, Jermaine "World Series MVP" Dye. Congrats, Kevin. The ChiSox are World Champions.

As I told you over the phone, you knew the Stros were D-U-N, done, when they failed to score with the bases loaded and only 1-out in the 6th against Freddy. It was over, and the Mariners creep up the list of longest-franchise-without-a-world-series-appearance.

The Mariners are also creeping up the list of most former players to win a World Series...

See...I believe the Strohs were done in the 5th inning of game 3 when their ace couldn't get an out and the collective optimism of Enron Field was exterminated...oh yeah and the fact that the Astros went the whole series w/o a manager...seriously did Garner want me to manage the team?...haven't seen a job like this since BoMel after the first two weeks of the season last year

Thanks for the kudos...I'm just fan...nothing compared to the die hards in the South Chicago. Thing is that the Cubs will still have that town.

Mariners still think they play in the Kingdome. They believe if they can out slug opponents then they will be okay. The truth is as soon as Gillick left the Mariners went with an inexperienced guy for the job. Not to mention they stayed with their horses too long (Edgar, Bones, and Boone). I agree with the mighty Jim and Jordan. Pitching wins championships. Defense also wins championships. This team is no where yet when it comes to those two elements. The last inning yesterday summed it up for the Sox. A shortstop making a diving play into the stands and a lazer to throw out the final out. The Mariners need to get a clue before they can be back among the elite franchises.
