Epic Baseball Viewing

Bonds On Bonds debuted last night on ESPN2. Weird show. Somehow Bonds was followed throughout the entire year prior and through last season... through the entire season! The best thing about the show is the documentary style format used where the producers edit in other interviews with baseball people the likes of Peter Gammons, Dusty Baker and Jon Miller. These snippets are to the point, bold, truthful looks into the controversy surrounding Barry Bonds. Bonds himself seems to have put up an emotional barrier that he displays in public and around the media. But he lets these barriers down in the comfort of his own home, even crying in one scene [linked above] when talking about the pressures of living up to his family tradition. Another great bonus is the f-bombs dropped in every other sentence Bonds busts out. Ballplayers curse almost as much as sailors, and it was refreshing to see.

After watching the episode, I think Bonds agreed to do the series to unmask himself and show that he is a human being who is an extremely hard worker, enormous ego, inherited talent, and in some ways I think Bonds thinks he might win back the populous that's (apart from SF, where he's still adored) turned on him amongst the steroid scandals, rumors and backstabbing. Very interesting watch.

As Devin branched over into sports blogging and noted... Kenji Johjima homered for the 2nd straight day. Yes, he's on pace for 162 homers to shatter Bonds' record*. I think Vegas moved the over/under from Christmas to the All-Star break as to when Train will purchase his own Johjima jersey. The M's offense came alive last night, followed by Eddie Guardado almost giving the game back to Los Angeles in the 9th. They should trade Guardado and move Rafael Soriano into the closers role. Soriano took out Vladimir Guerrero in the 7th inning with some filthy stuff.

And finally, the 5th of April. The Lodge's own train, Jordan S. Lovato, aka "J-Train", aka "Lovato", was born on this fine day. When the "Lovato" chooses to come out... it's not only special, but it's an event. Jordan, may this year be filled with laughter, love & many epic memories. Happy Birthday, Train. Hopefully you'll give the gift of the "Lovato" back to us this week as we celebrate your existence.

good post 2.0...Tyler's words were coming out of my mouth...1st on the Bonds thing...not sure how much sympathy the guy is going to get from the populous (outside SF)...the slight that many (including myself) have against any professional sport, gives little wiggle room for justification for certain actions...

If Bonds wants to play the expectation card that's fine, doesn't mean we have to except it, Is he looking for everyone to say he's a better ball player than his Dad and GodFather (Mays)?...if so the answer is yes and no...Bonds chose his own misery, by shunning the spotlight and turning against the media, which only intensifies your coverage and depletes your own privacy...

I'm not ever going to side with athletes that have the pressure of preforming underneath the "burden" of a multi-million $ contract to play a game as loved by many as baseball...that money can by a team of therapists and legal head-meds to get your sh*t together...and that's what kills me about the 'roids and Bonds...this wasn't Boone or Caminiti trying to find an elevated game...Bonds was there, several MVP's and status as best player in the game didn't have to be achieved via 'roids....

Bonds is still an amazing player, enhanced or not. The guy is probably the 2nd greatest slugger I've ever personally seen (I give the nod to Junior Griffey '94-95) in person. Having a Bonds last at bat HR lofted over your head into the drink in San Francisco to give the Giants a victory was almost unbelievable. Thanks, Balco!

Quote from a Toronto Star article:

"If it makes them happy to go out of their way to destroy me or whatever they want to try to do, go right ahead. It doesn't bother me," Bonds said. "You can't hurt me anymore than you've already hurt me. You can't hurt my family anymore than you've already hurt them."
