Mellow Yellow
Both Seatownshawn and I have been complaining about the lack of good releases this year. But until The Roots new album not coming out until later this year, I've had to remain patient (which is never a good thing, since I'm only patient with people). That being said, the past couple of weeks I have stumbled upon four great new releases.
My friends... if you want "mellow and chill out" music, then you should definitely go out and buy the following albums. All have been released since the new year and all are very, very good. By the way, Train, I have your iPod loaded and ready for you. Plus, all of the albums below are included on the 15 gigs.
1. In the Reins -- by Iron & Wine and Calexico
Calexico is a rock band. While Iron & Wine is one dude, who writes and plays some of the most beautiful and chilled out soft folk songs around. This album has Iron & Wine backed by Calexico and with a great rhythm section, the songs come alive even more. Great album. Iron & Wine can bring the mellow with few rivals.
2. Both Sides of the Gun -- by Ben Harper
I've been a Ben Harper admirer for years. Ever since his classic debut acoustic album Welcome To The Cruel World in 1994 my first year of college when he toured through my school. This double album is moderately priced (for a double album, only a buck or two more than a normal CD these days), but is amazing. Both Sides of the Gun does not disappoint. Disk 1 is mellower than a pot smoker at a Hempfest, filled with lullaby's and acoustic wonders. Disk 2 reminds you of the classic albums and sound of what the Rolling Stones used to crank out in the 60's and 70's. Seriously, Harper brought the rock on this disk. Pure rock n' roll. Both sides get better with every listen too, an underrated feature some overlook.
3. Tiny Cities -- by Sun Kil Moon
Mark Kozelek is Sun Kil Moon. Kozelek was the frontman for Red House Painters in the 1990's, putting out 6 albums of great success. The Red House Painters song "Have You Forgotten" was on the Vanilly Sky Soundtrack, for those of you that might know. Kozelek also has released 3 albums under is own name, but it's hard to spell and you'll have to admit that the bandname Sun Kil Moon sounds way better.
Anyhoo, the first Sun Kil Moon release in 2003 was friggin rad called Ghosts of the Great Highway, and this album follows up nicely. Although Ghosts was an original album, a lot of Kozelek's albums are cover albums. This one is full of Modest Mouse covers. Weird band that I am on and off about, but Sun Kil Moon puts a mellow twist on the tunes that makes great study, reading or dinner music.
4. Fox Confessor Brings the Flood -- by Neko Case
Neko Case's last album was 2002's Blacklisted. Since then she's put her efforts into touring and collaborating with the excellent band, The New Pornographers. Fox Confessor Brings the Flood doesn't blast full throttle like a The New Pornographers output, and the twangy alt-country style of Blacklisted has been toned down for this one. I think her songwriting is stronger on this album. So if you enjoyed her debut, then you'll love Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.

Nice review. Thanks again for helping me out with the tunes.
I am sure we will be meeting up soon. Just let me know when you want to do a pick up.
Nice call on the Iron & Wine/Calexico album (released last year though).
....I just got this a few weeks ago and have since picked up every Iron & Wine album available.....good, good shite.
Good call. It was released last year. Thanks for the correction. I have all of Iron & Wine's album and EP's. Shawon, if you want the EP's, let me know and I'll burn ya a disk. Some of my favorite songs of his are on the EP's.
I'd be interested in the Harper record...big fan for a while, however, his three records have converted him into a full-fledged christian rock act...which is cool, but not what I'm going to listen to, let me know if he's headed back in the secular direction
there should be a "last" after his and before three
I before E except after C
Whooooooo, who's pumped for some M's baseball?? can you feel the exrement? I mean excitement?
30,000+ families eating there dippin' dots and have a fun time because in the end that's what it's all about...
I'd like to be eating dippin' dops with Neko Case...that's for sure
I hear you on the Neko Case dots comment. And 3 records? This is Harper's 7th studio release. He may have a spiritual side ... but the man did pen one of the greatest smoke-out songs in recent history with Burn One Down + hasn't sold out to anyone because of his beliefs.
Dippin Dops? :)
I would be eatin' more then Dippin' Dots with Case... if you know what i mean and i know you know what i mean cause many woman wish to be carnal with me....
Seattle 1st Inning Summary:

- R. Ibanez struck out swinging
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)
2.0~ Diamonds on the Inside should've been labled, Jesus on the Inside...Will to Live and Burn to Shine was about half and half...and burning Indo doesn't indicate an anti-religous stance (not to get into religous/politics)...I believe its what Rastafarnism is based on...sitting back w/ Jah and a field of the goods
...because I am most supreme dancer yes?
Mmm... Train apparently loves him some Neko. [WARNING! Don't click unless the boss isn't looking]
Don't worry this is Sammy Davis jr jr... it is Grandpa's seeing eye b!$ch
On another note.....I have been listening to the new Snow Patrol record that is due out in another month.......sounds promising so far.
I'm gonna need to get a copy of that, Shawon. Wanna trade?
Snow Patrol in Gaelic means Lilith Fair
HA HA HA HA - nice, Jim will be here all week
sidenote - Johjima took a wack at the 1st pitch... gotta love the aggresiveness.... Move over Ichiro I got a new favorite player from the land of the Rising Sun.
I'm up for a trade.....I've got that Flaming Lips disc for you also.....
Since this has turned into a semi-live M's chat as well....I thought I would point out that Johjima hit a Long-Duc-Dong to right field in his second at bat.......welcome to Seatown Kenji!
Kenji-mania is here...Train's driving the bandwagon, still plenty of seats available...
Mark it...Nuno Betancourt just got 1 of his 20 RBI this year
oh...and MLB.com has the best gamecast out there...
its a new year...the M's were 3 runs down and actually showed enough O to come back...
...and sexson flies out to go 0-fer-three so far.....way to go richie!
Bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th. M's fail to score. Situational play apparently is a foreign concept to Grover.
George Sherril BLOWS.....he sucked all spring and you put him in on opening day with the score tied.....I guess I follow the logic there.
well they showed gumption with being able to tie it, I just get the feeling that we will have a 30-40% chance of winning in 1 run ballgames...between the lack of arms in the pen and the manager calling the shots...
