Third Times a Charm?

Last week I got on a Mad Max kick and even broke out the old VHS tapes to watch my copy of Beyond Thunder Dome. Which I am sure you are all a where is the last installment of the Max trilogy. After two great post apocalyptic road movies this film deteriorates into a massive pile. This seems to happen on to many occasions when a studio decides to green light a third installment of a movie series. The budget is increased the story is rushed and the final killer is the “let’s grab the big name star power”.

All these factors have killed too many quality movies and I fear it is going to kill the third X-men.

Look at other 3rd installment movies from the past.

Return of the Jedi- Blasphemy you say... Well look at it. We are just getting a rehash of the first movie. A second death star people, you don’t think the Empire might have had something else up there sleeve?

Lethal Weapon 3 and 4- Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, Weak storyline, Donner loosing interesting after making sure his check cleared the bank; In 4 they add Rock and Lei to up the star wattage. In my book the movies needed to end at 2. How can you top, a near death of Riggs after battling a partied.

I can go on and on about bad 3rd movies but I am just trying to get at when you look at the formula for a bad 3rd movie you get X-men 3. A change in direction, adding a cast of thousands of mutants; I don’t see anything that Ratner has done in the past that makes me think this one is going to pan out. He doesn’t have Chris Tucker to bail him out with comedy. Can he direct and action scene? I am going to this movie under extreme caution. I am expecting to be let down. I guess I have Mad Max to thank for this. Damn, you MasterBlaster….

Stan Lee and the Road Warrior say you are WRONG about X-MEN 3.

One of the only good 3rd installments that I can remember is The Last Crusade. 3rd time is apparently not the charm with movies. Of course, sequels are a bad idea pretty much every time. The reason why they worked with Star Wars is because they were written as a trilogy.

exceptions...Crusade, Rocky III, Return of the King(I know, doesn't count)...but Superman III (Pryor?), Karate Kid III?, Revolutions?, Batman and Robin?, Godfather III?, etc... more than prove the Train's theory...

X3 mashes up some of the best, epic, and defining mutant storylines:

The cosmic entity known as the Phoenix force Uncanny X-men #100-101.

The appearance of frikkin Omega Red from X-men #4.

Jeans first encounter with the Juggernaut from Uncanny X-Men #13.

My man Gambit - X-Factors dumb but sarcastic Multiple Man, and my junior high sweet heart Jubilation Lee. Hello, its going to be cool.

Sorry Duke, I just dont think that those story lines are going to pull through.

I heard from Jayne that the Dark Phoenix storyline is not developed well and it is really just a Wolverine and Storm show with all the rest of the mutants playing around in the background.

We're gonna have to settle this old school style. Train, I challenge you to a game of Magic.

See, that whole mish-mash idea is what scares me.

The Dark Pheonix saga is a big enough story that it could be a movie all in its own (even if they just did the ultimate version, which is more like the excorcist than the whole intergalactic thing).

Add onto that the fact that they're stealing from Joss Whedon's storyline about the mutant cure, bringing in a ton of new characters, and suddenly you have more stuff than a 2 hour action flick can hold.

Omega Red? I'm sorry...Kind of a lame villian. I loved the way he was handled over in Ultimate Spider-man...classic stuff.

A full out, drag out fight w/Juggernaut would have been awesome, but do you really think he's going to get much screen time? (Although I do love that they included the line "I'm the Juggernaut B*tch!")

Gambit's cameo will be fleeting @ best. He was actually supposed to have a cameo in X2 that was cut, that would have been EPIC. It was to occue during a scene when Xavier was being manipulated into killing the mutants. There was supposed to be a montage of mutants powers flaring up for the first time. We cut to a scene of a guy playing poker in a bar. He's looking at his cards, when suddenly they power up & explode. Knowing Bryan Singer, it would have been cool.
