Are you ready for Wednesday's Matchup?...well, are you?
Today's matchup comes from one of the Lodge's top 5 movies of all-time and pits Egg Chen v. Lo Pan: that's right its Victor Wong vs. James Hong in a battle for Chinese-American that-guy's: (In a new format I ask everyone to vote on one of these guys so they can move on to the next round, while last week's that guy JK Simmons get a bye, and an eventual matchup) career highlights will be provided below(my apologies that my html skills are not all there yet):
This one won't be easy, two tough competitors, two impressive resumes, let's break them down shall we:
Victor Wong:
Films Include: Big Trouble in Little China, Golden Child, Bloodsport, Tremors, Seven Years in the Theater sorry Tibet and who can forget the 3 Ninja series including: the original, 3 Ninja's Kick Back and 3 Ninja's: High Noon at Mega Mountain
other curious facts from our good friends at Fametracker :
-originally considered for the voice of Yoda
-captured the wise Chinese grandfather/mentor trophy for 18 years in a row from '81-'99
-legend has it that he once beat Pat Morita within an inch of his life for the role of Mr. Miagi, but ended up turning it down to concentrate on Egg Chen
James Hong
Films Include: Big Trouble in Little China, TV's Kung Fu, Chinatown/Two Jakes, Airplane!, Blade Runner, Missing In Action, Golden Child, The Karen Carpenter Story, Tango & Cash, Wayne's World 2, Tank Girl, Bloodsport 2 and the upcoming film The Adventures of Johnny Tao: Rock Around the Dragon this doesn't even come close to the entire catalogue
Curious Facts:
-versatility in not only being the head bad guy for Chinese Crime Syndicates, but also head Viet Cong generals, this kind of depth is not usually found with character actors
-in the running for That-Guy record with 121 films and no count on TV appearences to his record, places him near the top in films done,
-contractually obligated to complete 5 films a year, now has been pressed into action on the VG circuit
-one word: INDEED!!!!
So give me your favorite Wong or Hong story and make sure to vote so that we can eventually crown a that guy champion: honorable mention to Endo, who missed out on our Asian That-Guy round by a few votes, but could re-emerge in our deadly torture, crazy guy with weapons That-Guy round...

5 Comments:
James Hong all the way. The guy was in Blade Runner...what more could you want?
"Hey, say you a Blade Runner" -
Hong gets my vote just on that line alone. He in effect sets up the whole movie.
Consider the audience
James Hong played "Wan Chu" in the A-team episode: "The Maltese Cow"
Add in TV roles in
Magnum PI, TJ Hooker, Dukes of Hazzard, Starsky and Hutch, SWAT, Different Strokes, Hawaii 5-0 and the Fall guy with Lee Majors.
there is no contest.
James Hong is the man.
I think hands down it's James Hong. Think of all the great roles and type casting he has experienced.
great roles including Wayne's World 2...Tango and Cash, Hot to Trot, and cameos in MacGyver and Seinfeld...
No contest on this one...
We have a winner by an easy margin, he'll move on eventually to face a tougher opponent, just so Wong doesn't feel left out I'm casting a vote for him...and the MCP's vote doesn't count, sort of like Alaska in the Presidential Election...
