You know, it's funny. Out there I hated them, but in here, well, sometimes you need your **** sucked.
About three-four weeks ago I decided to stop posting for a while and try to become more “focused” at work…well it didn’t lead to becoming more focus at work, but it did build into a fairly heavy dose of writer’s block…so here I am trying to write my way out of it similar to Jack Torrence at the Overlook…”Have you ever thought about MY RESPONSIBILITIES?”…so here goes:
Yes the quote that is present today and tomorrow was actually written on Walker: Texas Ranger’s Website in response to the funniest email I’ve ever read…and I think I’m going to order the book just to double-check the facts…and the title “Against All Odds” refers to his childhood, much like 2.0’s, were he grew up a poor Asian child in the ghetto’s of Hong Kong
If you haven’t gotten the chance yet, please check out Klosterman’s latest article for Page 2 where he breaks down the Bird/Morrison comparison that moves far beyond sport and into the realms of Rex Chapman’s soul factor, which apparently is somewhere around Chef…(just a note on Klosterman, by far the best writer I’ve read since…well I don’t read that much so I don’t know, but a review on Sex, Drugs and Coco-Puffs is coming just as soon, as will the passing of the best book I’ve read since “I Had Troubles Getting to Solla Sollew”)
To add on to our discussion of Albums from ’05, thanks be to KEXP for giving us the top 90.3 records of the year so that I know which albums to pirate and right now, M83’s Before the Dawn Heal’s Us might have been the most overlooked record of the year…I will admit that this record won’t fit the majority, but if you espouse an opened-minded belief on music and dig haunting-electronic-synth with aggressive drumming than I think you might feel the same way…and bonus points to Pontiac for giving M83 the capitalist exposure they/he deserves….also brownie points to Sleater-Kinney’s The Woods, best record by far from one of the most underrated groups of the past 15 years…new producer + remote location=excellent rock despite their Evergreen heritage… very similar formula to when Nirvana recorded “In Utero” with Steve Albini, but on a much smaller scale and honestly “The Woods” is a better record…
This is a late addition only because it's rare when the Lodge kicks DC talk other than our collective disdain for the Redskins, but these Alito trials are killing me!!!
"wait, you mean if I put that I was part of a misogynistic, racist Ivy league society and I this as a reference in my application for the Reagan Administration, all I have to do 20 years later is say that I don't remember and the majority of the senator's are cool with that? f-yeah...well let me tell you about the time I was at this Klan rally that I forgot... "
On to the main course:
Train commented about 01.11.06 episode of “Lost” and regardless of where you stand on the show or that episode, there are some things that need to be discussed. First, is the underrated element of adding new cast members with quality back stories, as Train mentioned, “Lost” will only succeed as long as the back story on the characters continues to be intriguing…oh yeah, and for anyone not watching this show…shame on you…go out and get season one this weekend, bring a catheter and don’t leave the couch until you’re up to speed…this is not a request….
Question: Over the course of TV History, how many actors have moved from one successful show to another and brought completely different aspects to their respective rolese/shows? Let’s do a little check and feel free to bring up a list of you own:
Michael Landon: Bonanza---Little House----Highway to Heaven…not really a jump between any of these….the sensitive father-figure w/ understanding and compassion that teaches morals and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….don’t get me wrong…I have a soft-spot for the man, but really brought the same thing to three relatively successful shows
David Caruso: Caruso sucks…moving on
Jimmy Smits: Personal favorite of a Lodge regular, but the pilot of Vice, Cop Rock, LA Law and West Wing bring a different dynamic…the latter two definitely show that he is upper echelon of TV actors, haven’t seen him on WW yet to really comment
William Shatner: next
Dirk Benedict: Faceman and Lt. Starbuck…if anyone comes close to bringing something different to two successful franchises it’s this guy or is it? Because sometimes you feel like a Benedict sometimes you feel like a:
Hasselhoff:(that website is not for the faint of heart and probably not suitable for work) I don’t have to explain this do I?
Obviously I could take this list into the next blog over, so I’ll save you the time, the actor that I’m referencing is the hot man of the hour:
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje: two remarkable TV shows…two remarkable roles:
OZ as Simon Adebisi the crazy African that quite simply made the season 3 & 4 and not surprisingly lowered the series once he exited stage left (don’t want to give away spoilers, although the show falls within the 5 year rule, so no excuses). Oz was a once-in-a-lifetime show that only could have been accomplished via HBO and we’re talking about an actor that put fear into a community of serving-life inmates at a maximum security prison, that takes something, I don’t know what, but something. I always thought he was an underrated factor on an underrated show, which was why I was happy to see him added to the very overrated (this is not a bash, just the facts) show such as: LOST.
The problems that LOST is going to face moving forward is why a show like this is hard to make in the first place. Everyone saw Gilligan’s Island, yes I like it when the Globetrotters came to the Island, yes I like Mary-Ann, yes the Cpt and Gilligan were bunk-mates, but no I never believed they were on an island. When you create a premise where you’re selling an Island plot, you better have plenty of fill time and good sense of pacing so that you can get the TV minimum of 5 seasons (this seems to be the over/under on longevity or the capacity for quality except for a rare few shows).
What does this have to do with Adebisi? Well, after watching OZ I was positive that I would only view Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje from there on as….Adebisi…much like Michael Landon and David Caruso, well not Caruso because he sucks, but maybe Jimmy Smits….well, I was wrong…the character of Mr. Eko has revitalized (yes it needed to be revitalized even after one season because of the Gilligan premise) a series that was slowly slipping or the writers allowed us to believe it was slipping. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a continuing series where the writers introduce a character post-season one and that character slowly becomes the main, if not one of the top 3 characters in the show? The compelling intrigue of the character via the writing and acting is elevating the show into a new stratosphere, something rarely done by a drama on something other than HBO.
So what’s the point? Should we anoint Adewale as the next Brando of TV and begin construction on a more powerful Death Star…well possibly…but not quite yet. Just trying to give props to a guy that’s slowly rising the levels of props and entering into the legendary with his eyes on "epic" status. Oh yeah, also check out his debut role as Kahega the guide from Congo.
So that’s it…first one out of the block in almost a month and I feel a little like Hartnett in “40 days, 40 nights” , you ever see that one MCP? And yes, I just made a Josh Hartnett reference, yes, I’m ok with that…
Oh, before I forget (damn 2.0 stole my thunder, first come first serve on the Chewbacca line I suppose)

First off...yeah, I saw 40 Days 40 Nights...actually I own it. I'm not proud, but whatever.
"The internet man...it's all on the internet".
Anyhow, I'm totally with you on the "Lost" comments. It's without a doubt the best show currently on TV. Although I do have some reservations about how much they're giving away. The Damon Lindeloff has often stated that they have plans for this show to go at least 4-5 seasons, so I'm a little worried about how much they're giving away (I really didn't expect to see the monsters this season).
I'll have to post some season spoilers later....
As for the Shatner thing, I have to disagree with you. This is a guy who is known to millions as Captain Kirk. But on the show "Boston Legal" he's amazing. I used to think Shatner couldn't actually act, but after seeing this show, he's totally blown me away.
Looks like I stole your thunder on more than just the Chewy pic, Jimbo. I linked the Klosterman article earlier also. Sucks for you. That said, I still want to borrow the Cocoa Puffs book when you are finished reading it.
The M83 album almost made my Top-5 list & would have made my Top-10. It's probably not as good as their previous disc called Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, but it's a solid spin.
Adewale probably shouldn't claim his role in Congo, since it's possibly the worse movie ever made... and not even in the unintentional comedy way, it's just terrible. To this day, Congo is the only movie I've ever walked out of.
As far as actors changing shows and bringing it completely different, I nominate:
Peter Krause (I)
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0470244/
Krause went from Sports Night to Six Feet Under, playing a wise-cracking Sports Anchor named Casey McCall to the depressed Emmy-nominated Mortician Nate Fisher. The two parts are pretty polarized & I think you have a front-runner for the award.
Train. You are getting a little hyperlink happy
Actually, Goose, this post was made by Jimbo. I guess it'd been a few weeks since he'd make a post so he blew his load.
I'm glad the over-linking wasn't wasted on anyone...and valid point on the Peter Krause, although I've seen 1 episode of sports night and probably 1 episode combined of six fee under...neither one of those shows is claims the fraction of popularity of "Lost"...so I think Shatner is a better analogy even though I think the TJ Hooker transition should not be overlooked for his preformance on "Boston Legal", another show I've never seen...
oh yeah...and 2.0 you linked the Klosterman article, but you explain nothing...something I believe you critized MCP for in his all-time Seahawk article...we're about opinions here boys and Train...
Okay, forgetting Krause can be forgiven since you've never seen Sports Night or Six Feet Under -- but only if you forgive me for never seeing a single episode of Lost. I'm planning on borrowing Train's DVD's one of these days (Jordan has tried to pimp them like gold the past 3 times I've been over there, frantically explaining, "Dude, it's the best show on T.V. How could you have never watched it? Plus, the chicks are hot!").
you know Train don't go or watch unless the "chicks or hot/ he can wear their breasts as a hat" or there's a midget involved....
