Pitch Talk Thursday on a Sunday Presents: Q & A

Here’s another crack at the most talked about post that never gets commentary (not that there’s anything wrong with that). This week we’re changing formats and hopefully we’ll cover all bases and just for the record I’m currently writing this while watching the replay of ManU vs. Middleborough from yesterday, so please don’t give me the score.

Q: It seems like this really isn’t a Football column, it’s more of a ManU masturbation piece week in and week out? Are you ever planning on writing about more than what happens to you precious Devils and their overpriced wankas?—Miguel (Barcelona)

A: No, but I’ll make sure to keep you updated on what happens in the next round of the Champions League.

Q: How does it feel to be on the losing end of the biggest match in the Premiership this season? ---John T. (Chelsea)

A: Well John, the one point that United gained will definitely have an asterisk the rest of the season (live/delayed column break: Saha, PK, 20th minute, 1-0 Devils). Speaking on behalf of all United supporters we appreciate Mourhino letting us control the 1st half. The boys really did have their star glasses for the men in blue all game, we felt fortunate that they let us play at all. We’ll make sure to return the favor in April.

Q: Che di Fabio Cannavaro? ---Gianfranco Z. (Milan)

A: Yes, what about Fabio Cannavaro? The 2006 winner of the Ballon d’Or (European Footballer of the Year), and just another trophy on the mantle for the extremely talented Italian central defender who added to his countries World Cup Trophy. He has also claimed a Silver Ball award and was a member of the 2006 World Cup All-Star Team.

Currently playing with a collective group of overrated and overpaid talent at Real Madrid, Cannavaro has been one of the only bright spots. Generally I have nothing but contempt and disparaging remarks for all Italian footballers and clubs, but Cannavaro is thhe exception, he plays the back line with a ton of skill and intellect and it also a weapon on set pieces for offense. He’s the world’s best player at his position (CB) and was the best player on the best team during the World Cup. Even if it was fixed.

So open another bottle of Sauvignon on me amico!

Q: So, what do you think of your chances in the Lodge FIFA 2007 Champions League Tournament? ---Jordan L. (West Seattle)

A: All I know is everything depends on the match up. Train and I haven’t been able to come up with an answer to the mighty Dude and if I have to watch him hoist the Lodge Champion Trophy with virtual Liverpool, well I need stop typing before I lose my breakfast. All I know is that I might have found my dark horse for the tourney on Thursday, we’ll see and I’m sure this was by far the most interesting Q & A so far.(end of the 1st half, 1-0 ManU)

Q: Is this column Pants? ---Shawon S.(Sand Point)

A: Well I suppose that depends on who you ask, which is really a way of saying, maybe. I think during the course of these columns I play/write hard for about 65-75%, which matches the effort given by about 95% from the players on Arsenal and Chelsea. I think so far after five and a half columns I’ve probably moved into those Capri-shorts that guys from Southern Europe wear. My goal by the end of the season (May) is to be pant-less like Owen Haregraves versus Portugal this summer.

(Speaking of pants, my favorite all pants player Abel Xavier is currently playing for Middleborough. Seriously, this guy is bad, but his style alone is worth a roster spot.)

Q: What former player, now retired would you bring back to the European game during the January transfer window? ---Diego M. (Argentina)

A: (Live/Delayed game break: Morrison far post 67’ 1-1 ‘Borough/ManU)….(I’m not kidding, Live/Delayed game break: Darren Fletcher header near side 68’ 2-1 ManU)…What was the question, oh yeah…easy…Ruud Van Nistelrooy…(another live/delayed game break, ‘Borough substitution in the 72’, one of the best names in the game, Massimo Maccarone…yes like Kraft Box Pasta)

Q: When are the Dutch going to get some love in the column? ---Joe E. (Green Lake)

Next week…always next week.

I give love to only one Dutch player besides former Total Footballer and current Barca Manager Frank Riikert and that is solely for his hair, which has been covered already. No, I’ve been impressed with the consistent play and professionalism of 36 year-old ManU GK Edwin van der Sar. Nicknamed “The Jolly Green Giant” supposedly because of his expertise in natural Dutch Herb horticulture, van der Sar has goalkeep’d for such International Giant Clubs such as Ajax, Juventus and now ManU. Initially coming through the Ajax youth league, he broke in with the most famous Dutch Club in 1992 and appeared in 226 matches for the club and has served the Dutch national team for over 118 caps (appearances), and of course if he was playing for Chelsea or Liverpool he would be utter-pants, but that goes without saying.

Q: Will there ever be something for me to comment on? ---Jeff S. (Fdub)

A: Hmmm…Morten Anderson nearly missed becoming a member of the Danish Junior National Team, which would’ve certainly denied the NFL of almost 2422 points.

Ok…that’s it for this week’s column, final score ManU 2-Middleborough 1, ugly three points for the Devils, but of course we’ll take it. As always, thanks for reading.

Hey bro'...your column is not pants.....at least I don't think so.

I read 'em everytime...I just don't have much to offer when it comes to insightful comments....but I do read.

I can agree that Cannavaro is the bomb. I don't get to watch much futbol....but of everything I've seen (and granted, a lot of it was the WC), Cannavaro is the shizzle. I think, if I had a soccer team...I'd want him on my back line....hands down.

Throwing a bone to Goose at the end was a nice touch. And it wasn't a Dutch futbol column, but you did give some love to the Giant Devil... so that is a good thing.

Oh, and I've surged ahead of Dude in the Lodge Fantasy Futbol League, thanks to sacking Drogba for footballers that were actually playing in Week 16. Train, you are slipping, my man.
