Hutchinson Gets Tagged

Deadline Thursday - In other local sports news.....the Seahawks informed Steve Hutchinson that they have used the transition tag on him. Interesting move....I'm guessing they are banking on the fact that Guards aren't traditionally given the big buck$, and this eliminates the risk that they would overpay him out of the gate. Hutch has been the model Hawk since he was drafted in 2001. Great person, great attitude, great football team player. The definition of getting it done.

Sadly I think that when they tag a lineman he is treated just the same as a tackle so he is looking to get Walter Jones/Jonathan Ogden money for one year

John "JC" Clayton mentioned in his blog yesterday that Hutchinson is...

"...one of the best offensive linemen in football and even though guards generally aren't on the high end of the pay scale, Hutchinson is expected to command tackle-type money. If no deal is reached by Thursday, the Seahawks won't loose him and they will tag him."

JC, bringing the truth. I'm happy about the move. His signing was a higher priority in my book over Shaun "My next kid will be named Angel" Alexander. Plus, we can now still negotiate for a long term deal and have a longer time frame to do it.

By the way, I found a chart for franchise price tags... turns out that all lineman are lumped together. The chart is on Len Pasquarelli's article here.

I just like that there's a franchise # for Punter AND Kicker...I think they should also add PA announcer and team trainer to the franchise list

How about a tag for the Longsnapper? Or the Holder?
