A lesson in NFL History. (Class in Session)

Does anyone know who Bobby Douglass is? Over the next 2 or 3 weeks you are going to hear his name on Sportscenter, Inside the NFL and on all your Sunday/Monday/Thursday Broadcast.

You may ask why.

Was it because he was a #2 pick as a QB out of Kansas in 1971?
Was is because he was a QB for the Bears, Packers, Chargers and Saints?
Was it because he was 507 of 1178 for 6493yds 36tds and 64ints?

Has anyone even heard Bobby Douglass's name ever?

Maybe you did back in 1990. His name was brought up a few times that season as well. You see in 1990. Randall Cunningham ran for 942 yds. This was 26 yds short of the NFL Record for Rushing Yards by a QB in a single season. 968 yards. Set in 1972 by Bears QB, Bobby Douglass

If you are following this season. Michael Vick is 99 yds short of the record with 5 games left to go. This record falling is a pretty amazing accomplishment in a pass happy/run second world of the NFL Today. Vick most likely will not only break the record, but will probably end up with around 1200yds rushing. This is a Running QB in a League that 20 years ago asked Doug Williams how long he had been a Black QB. Its a pretty amazing feat.

Other records to look for in the last 5 games. (Trying to scoop Elias by at least a week)

You all know that Shaun Alexander is the Single Season Touchdown Scoring leader with 28tds. LT is on pace to beat that record. If he scores 29tds he will also Tie Paul Hornungs 46 year old record for most points in a season with 176. (I had to include a pic of the Powder Blues...Goose Loves the Powder Blues)

Also Brett Favre with 11 TDS will Break Dan Marinos Record for TD passes in a career. I dont think this will happen unless Brett goes off.

Also here is a little NFL Trivia for you. (Next time you call Stump the Band of Baffle The Bastards...this is a great question)

Who is the only QB to be the Career Passing Yardage leader for two different NFL Teams?

I will post the answer tomorrow. I may provide a few hints along the way

13 Tzameti

Post-Highlights of a rare and awesome MNF Snow game I watched this movie in the dreery twilight of the winter snow. Its called 13 Tzameti. The relevance of the 13 becomes obvious as the story develops. The plot summary online is an ample introduction: Sebastian, a young man, has decided to follow instructions intended for someone else, without knowing where they will take him. Something else he does not know is that Gerard Dorez, a cop on a knife-edge, is tailing him. When he reaches his destination, Sebastian falls into a degenerate, clandestine world of mental chaos behind closed doors in which men gamble on the lives of others men.

Really, I didn't pay too much attention to names in the film. This movie is dark, cold, and flat that forces you to look at every nuance and movement. Flowing in this film is kind of like a bad dream that isn't so much terrifying as it is startlingly numb. The black & white style helps emphasize shots more through the medium. It won a lot of fancy film awards and I recommend it with my empty black heart.

Since this film may be difficult to find you can torrent it hereand get the subs here. The dvd does not release for U.S. audiences until 02.13.07 from Palm films.

High School Football

As this weekend comes and High School Football Championships are taking place, I was sent this Page 2 Article centered around a novel about the commercialization of High School Football. I think I will go out and buy thhis book. The ESPN article is interesting. Its not as much about the book but the feedback that the book has provided in different regions.

Being close to many High School Athletes its interesting to see the "Win at all cost Attitudes" and the affect that it has on young Prep Students.

***From the Article**

All this is happening right now because high school sports is the next gusher in the jock entertainment complex. The ground is already rumbling. It took H.G. Bissinger's classic, "Friday Night Lights," 14 years to make it from the page to the big screen, but now it's a network TV show as well. Its time has come. Hoover High of Birmingham, Ala., arguably the best prep team in the country, has its own MTV show, "Two-A-Days." Last year, an ESPN reality show, "Bound for Glory," featured the football team of Montour High in McKees Rocks, Pa., trying to return to its state championship days with Dick Butkus as coach, Reebok uniforms and a new $40,000 scoreboard.

Its an interesting Read.

Anyway I hope everyone enjoys their Thanksgiving Holiday. Going with a Goose Family Tradition for years, I welcome anyone over to Casa Goose tomorrow in the event that you dont have somewhere to go. Like Vietnam. No one gets left behind.

Pitch Talk Thursday on Wednesday Presents: Why Scottish Football Doesn't Suck and Glasgow's Favoirte Rising Sun

As with most things in life; to be called an honest supporter of anything from fast food to porn actresses you have to stick through the bad times to feel any sort of joy during the good. I mentioned several weeks ago that I would be covering a section entitled why Scottish Football Doesn’t Suck and I can think of no better time than following the Scottish side, Celtic FC’s 1-0 defeat over my beloved Red Devils of Manchester last night.

Sherman, set the way back machine for November 6th, 1887, where we find Irish Marist brother, Brother Walfrid, formally creating a football club to help support the increasingly large poor-Irish Immigrant community in Glasgow. His fund was named The Poor Children’s Dinner Table, his club was called Celtic.

To say that Celtic is heavily linked to the Irish population around the world would be a slight understatement. Nicknamed “the bhoys” they have come to represent not only The Irish/Scottish community around the world, but also the Catholic community around the world, which is a fairly large fan base. It’s sufficed to say that the Rock may be “The People’s Champion” of American Fake Wrestling, but Celtic are “The International People’s Club.”

It should be noted that the legend of Celtic is helped by their cross-town rivals, Rangers F.C. who represent the original Glasgow club and primarily Scottish and Protestant fan base. The friction between Catholic and Protestant only ups this rivalry to a point beyond The Ohio State and Michigan. It also doesn’t hurt that traditionally both of these squads are usually 1 and 2 in the Scottish Premier League.(SPL).

If you don’t believe the popularity of Celtic FC, take this stat in to account. They play at Glasgow Park in East Glasgow where they seat 60,000+ for every home game. That stadium is the second largest in the UK behind only Old Trafford in Manchester. Celtic not only plays in the smaller SPL, but seats more than uber-English Clubs EPL-clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle.

Why am I mentioning this today? Well last night I saw David trample Goliath in a Match Day 5 Champions League Match at Celtic Park that featuring only one goal, but enough electricity to power the City of Glasgow for the next year. The game was decided in the 81st minute on a free kick taken by our featured player of the week and definitely Duke’s favorite SPL player: Shunsuke Nakamura.

His free kick taken in the 81st was a thing of beauty and his second of the Champions League and second versus Manchester United, proving the Samurai-Skill of his left leg. Here are some accolades for the best Japanese National Player playing in Europe:

*Has won the 2000 and 2004 Asian Cup with the Japanese National Team
*MVP of 2004 Asian Cup
*MVP of J-League (Japanese League) in 2000
*Bronze Shoe Award in 2003 for FIFA Confederations Cup

Nakamura plays the MF position and represents the rising international look of the SPL, but this isn’t a marketing ploy. Shunsuke plays UK-football well, with a great touch from outside the penalty-area with a golden left leg. The three points that he claimed for Celtic and Glasgow last night helped to place them in the top position in their Group, which will almost certainly see them play European Football past the new year.

Oh yeah, and Louis Saha is Pants.

il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo: The Husky Football Season Review

Thanks to everyone for coming out on Saturday and watching the Dawgs stop the Apple Cup streak and putting up with me falling all over the place like some Capitol Hill dance company (and sorry for not making an official invite, I was pretty burnt out by Thurday night). As my buddy Raj used to tell say: “you’re F’n up left and right”…yes…yes I was, but I felt that I had a good reason and here is your Season Review titled after the Greatest Spaghetti Western ever.

Il Cattivo (the ugly):

There’s so much material her, but I’m going to try and condense it to just the main points:

Every minute of game-play from the interception in OT versus CAL to the 67 yard Cody Ellis grab Saturday:

Unfortunately this included four consecutive losses that reflected a team reverting to the failures of the past instead of the integrity of the future.

1-The Cal interception, in hindsight this game should never have gone to OT if TY had followed the rule that you go for two after the Miracle Hail Mary. Initially I was against the two-point conversion, but what difference does a loss in OT have? The way that Lynch was cranked up in the 4th quarter and Cal's offensive line finding inspiration, there was no way our Defense was going to handle the college overtime format, which benefits dominate offensive line play. I put this one on Lappano and Ty for not thinking beyond the next play following the Marlon Wood catch.

2-ASU, OT/Bonnell injury/Johnny D-time, This game had a little different twist, however UW was once again riding momentum going into the OT after trailing by two touchdowns to begin the 4th quarter. Once again, UW is unable to control the line in an OT contest and is forced to kick a 45+yard field goal and then on the very first play from ASU give up a wide open wheel route to the TE. Deflating loss that was made possible by a mis-read by the LB's that seemed to be a theme for the team during this time period , oh yeah and that loss lead to:

3-The preview to the worst UW football game I’ve ever seen. UW goes to Eugene and can not formulate even a decent offensive game plan. With UO dominating the running game and killing the clock UW consistently drops third down passes and is unable to rush for more than 50 yards in the entire game. Not sure why we are unable to get creative in the 10th game of the year when you knew you weren't going to be able to go through the tackles. The result of that de-moralizing loss set up:

4-The worst UW football game I’ve ever seen. Yes, even worse than the spanking that Miami gave UW after the Apple Cup four or five years ago. Three points versus the Stanford Defense? Really? Three Points? And One of their TD’s came on an interception the other came on a 65+ yard play that involved one of the worse whiff’s in college football. Man, just writing about this game pisses me off…this was definitely the lowest point of the season and made every fan take a look in the mirror and ask why they keep subjecting themselves to this. This loss is placed solely on the shoulders of Ty, even though each coach and players should've been asking themselves some serious questions, the lack of emotion and execution in the last home game and final game for the seniors made me pray that Ty recruits tougher players from a mental and physical aspect.

Next before I throw up again:

Il Brutto (the bad)

These games were less gut-wrenching than the ugly, but were consistently frustrating to witness and experience seemingly over and over again.

1-Oregon State-in hindsight, OSU actually was a fairly decent team, proving this by stopping USC’s Pac 10 winning streak in Corvallis. However, at the time UW had the opportunity to put the Beav’s away and were unable to consistently make first downs and turn the pressure up. On the other end of the ball, the defensive scheme for the game was horrible, allowing Evanson Bernard the ability to chew up seven to eight yards a handoff. This was the game that the Beavers got their Groove back thanks to Ken Baer putting confidence back in Matt Moore by allowing the Beavers to create a running game and then play-action to big gains. Oh yeah, we also lost our on field general mid-way through the season….that was brutto.

2-USC-I don’t have a lot of critique about this game, because the team played over it’s head for about 55 of the required 60 minutes and who knows if they got hosed on the last call or not. The downside to this game was the hangover it caused the next week versus OSU.

3-Oklahoma-27-13, UW has the ball at the OU 3 yard line with 4 plays to punch it in and change the complexion of the game….and….what happens?.....yeah that’s right a fumble by the QB and bam any chance we had at a big time upset is gone. This game wasn’t completely ugly because they came out and played tough in the first half and went into the break even, but failed to show up in the third quarter, when good teams usually win games.

Overall, the bad games usually carried with them a glimmer of hope, but the end result was another L in the record column, which automatically takes away from them falling under the good. I left out the Cal game, because I believe it led to a mentality of losing that crushed the team spirit.

A trend from all of the bad games that separates them from the ugly games is how the game usually came down to one play. One stop, one first down, one turnover that seemed to kill the mental stability of the team. I think if just one of these things had turned around for us, especially early, the season has a different look. Call me crazy.

Il Buono (the Good) :

So I just gave you seven games that ended with losses and were separated by whether they were “ugly” losses or just “bad” losses. Well, this group is obviously for the wins and there is never an “ugly” or “bad” win when you’ve won a combined three games the previous two years.

1-San Jose State, the first time this team had been over .500 in quite sometime even though it still went down to a last second play and they gave up 29 points to a middle of pack WAC team. Bottom line: “never look a “W” in the mouth.”

2-Fresno State, another middle to bottom of the pack WAC team that we win by just a hair or blocked PAT. This was a good win early for the team, putting us back over .500 and giving us some confidence going into Pac 10 play. I think we were helped by Oregon taking FSU to the limit the week before in an emotional game, but whatever, a win is a win, even though Fresno is going to end up winning probably 3-4 games at best. Baer called a great second half to this game, after being dominated on the line through the first half.

3-UCLA, talk about the feel good game of the season. Stanback has his best game as a QB, Dan Howell returns a pick to ice the game, the heart of the team to come from behind. This was definitely the peak of the season for the team, getting only their 2nd Pac 10 win in three seasons and their first against UCLA since 2000, which lead directly to:

4-Arizona, in one of the oddest settings of the year, watching the game from the BoA with 7,000 other win-starved Dawg fans, we saw an offensive explosion during the 2nd quarter that resulted in a 21-3 hafltime lead and eventual W. In hindsight, I’m glad we got UA early after seeing them tear up WSU, Cal and UO in respective weeks. See what happens when your job is on the line? Stoops? Riley?

5-WSU, to the best W of the year and the only win inside the "NW championship." Does the W in the final week against your rivals negate the six previous weeks of futility? You bet your ass it does. Am I bitter that this team finished under .500 after starting 4-1, sure? Of course.. but somehow beating the Cougs is like pulling from a bottle of Early Times in five degree weather, is it still cold as sh*t outside? Sure, but the engine is getting revved and your ready to go.

Things that stood out in the Good Category:

a) UW was able to run the football, this is huge at any level of the game, this helped Lappano call a better game and work the play-action.

b) Defensive-stops, when they needed them, they made them and even created turnovers, something they’ve slowly improved upon in the last three seasons.

c) Special Team Execution, it doesn’t have to be stellar every game, but when you don’t have dominate line play, you can’t afford for the Special Teams to hurt you.

d) Offensive play calling, Lappano reminded me of Rain Man most of the season, occasionally calling innovative plays, but mixed in with a ton of redundancy and lack of creativity. Part of this was player execution, but part was not calling plays to the strength of your team and not spreading the QB out and running misdirection to hide the weakness and inexperience of the offensive line. I still think this fact alone costs us two to three games.

e) Defensive play calling. I was satisfied with most of Baer’s schemes throughout the season with the exception of OSU, and in the wins I thought he mixed pressure and coverage well to keep the offenses guessing.

This is running long and I have more that I want to cover including position by position breakdown and what the spring and 2007 season look like. Stay Tuned for a Fistful of Locker….

If you forget me again I will give you the Lando Treatment

The Seneca Wallace era rolls on.....

Freaky deeky of the Weekly

Following on tangent of one our more recent topics I give you the story of the International Order of Old Bastards, exotic dancers, and police. They have a wonderful history, most members are in their sixties but you must be at least 35 to join with no other restrictions. From what I've researched online they seem to be big in the U.S. and Australia. The order has about 1 million members in 4,600 chapters around the world.

Mainly I like this story because, these guys have the best club name EVER. Also, strippers and fraternal organizations go together like bread and butter. Why is the civic government so hardcore these days?

The police halted a strip show at a recent Old Bastard gathering. The AP gives us a few more details: MONONA, Wis. - No more bare bodies for the old boys. Police on Monday stripped the local chapter of the International Order of Old Bastards of the exotic dancers who have performed at their meetings for decades.

"This is for elderly people who just want to have a good time with their peers," Story, a 60-year-old retired engineer and tavern owner, told the Wisconsin State Journal for Wednesday's editions.
But police showed up at Monday's quarterly meeting at the Eastside Businessman's Association and warned them that they needed an adult entertainment permit to have strippers. The State Journal said police learned about the strippers after one of the paper's reporters started asking about it in June.

When Story told the audience the strippers were canceled, many members left, the report said. Aside from a cynical "thanks" one of them uttered to police on the way out, members left peacefully, the report said.

Thanksfully the Lodge is free of illegal activity, or it is well hidden.

Someone was going to do it

Its the little things that Goose misses about coaching youth football

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) -- Authorities are considering charges against a Pee Wee football coach who was caught on videotape attacking a referee after being told to stop cursing on the sidelines in front of his 5- and 6-year-old players, police said.

The amateur video of the Nov. 4 incident shows the coach charging onto a field and tackling the 18-year-old referee, who police Capt. John Houston said was briefly knocked unconscious.

"The coach had been warned several times about cursing on the sidelines. When the referee ejected him from the game, that's when he rushed him," Houston said.

A crowd of parents ran onto the field and surrounded the pair, he said.

For any of you who have ever had to do sales.....

Celebrating the class of 2006

On Monday (11/13/2006), the NHL enshrined two players and a couple guys known as builders of the game. Two names really stick out: Herb Brooks and Patrick Roy. So I want to quickly address the other players before going into detail about Brooks and Roy.

Terrance "Dick" Duff: Played from 1956 to 1972. He played for eight seasons for the Toronto Maple Leafs, traded to the Rangers and was also traded to the Canadians. He finished his career with the Kings and the Sabres. He raised the cup twice with the Leafs ('62 & '63) and four more times with the Canadians ('65, '66, '68, and '69). He was a seven time All-Star. He hit the 20 goal mark eight times and had a career high in goals with 29 in 58-59 season.

Harley Hotchkiss: Harley was one of the men responsible for bringing the Flames to Calgary. The Flames came up north in 1980 from Atlanta. He was also responsible for the building of the Saddledome (home of the Flames). The Flames won the Cup in 1989 and was in the Cup final in 2004 losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Hotchkiss was also valuable commodity in settling the labor dispute in 2004.

Herb Brooks: Most noticably known for the Miracle on Ice team (Gold Metal Winning 1980 USA Team), See Miracle, was one of the builders enshrined. Herb Brooks died a couple of years ago in a car accident but had a long list of accomplishments, many included hockey. Brooks was part of 1964 and '68 Olympic Teams. He was also a coach for the University of Minnesota and guided them to three national championships ('74, '76, & '79). Brooks went on to coach the USA National Team in 1980. Surprisingly, he wasn't the first choice for the head coaching job. I guess the second choice paid off. Brooks went on coach four different teams in the NHL (NYR, Min, NJ, and Pitts). Brooks finished with a record of 219-222-66 and a 19-21 record in the playoffs. Herb will be forever be linked to the USA team in 1980 but was still involved in hockey until he died. He forsaw the problems in the NHL in the late 90's and outlined some changes he wanted to see which became fact after the strike of 2005. Brooks had the best thoughts for the NHL and modernizing the US style to catch up with the European/Russian style of hockey. He also made hockey popular in the States as well. Brooks was certainly a builder and a worthy addition to the Hall of Fame.

The final inductee was Patrick Roy. The first goalie that really stuck out to me whenever I saw highlights as a kid. Roy had a 19 year career with the Montreal Canadians and Colorado Avalanche. He is a 3-time Conn Smythe winner ('86, '93, and '01), which is given to the MVP of the Stanley Cup. He was also a winner of the William M. Jennings award, given to goalies who allow the least amount of goals during the season. Roy won the award several times ('87,'88,'89,'92, and 2002). Patrick was a 11 time All-Star and 4 time Stanley Cup Champion ('86, '93, '96, and 2001. One final interesting fact is that Roy is the only goalie to win at least 200 games for two different teams and he is the winningest goalie of all time withj 551 wins. Patrick Roy is in a class with tons of great goal scorers and now he is in the elite club that all hockey players strive their careers for. He is currently coaching for the Quebec Remparts.

Other Hockey News:

  • Blue Jackets fired their head coach today, they have the second worst point total in the league behind the Flyers and Phoenix.
  • Points Leader: Mirian Hossa: ATL with 30 points.
  • Best Record: Eastern Conference - Buffalo 14-1-1 Western - Anaheim 13-1-4
  • Best Team in the last 10 games: Nashville and Buffalo are 8-1-1

A whole new attitude: GONE WRONG

Rock after all was born out of country...

Veteran Bands & Forgotten Brothers

So as I type and type at my computer crunching numbers I have a wonderful WWII miniseries playing in the background. Its Band of Brothers, which was excellently made and an instant classic. Besides being a truth to authenticity, its further impacting since throughout the series there are interviews from the remaining members of the prestigious Easy Company, which the series features. Easy Company was the 5th company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, U.S. 101st Airborne Division during World War II on the frontlines in the European Theater. Apart from landing on D-day, Operation Market Garden, and freeing victims of the Holocaust, they also held out at Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge. I'm currently watching the Concentration Camp episode titled "Why We Fight" which is less battle heavy and much more sorrowful. Besides the media glorification of this group, the shiny veneer is kept to a tedium with the truer aspects of the history with the interviews and the dramatic realities of their time.

I remember getting into war films as a kid through Patton. He's credited with saving the 101st from Bastogne. Easy Company sees this history as a false truth. Unfortunately, for a long time I was enamored with "heroic war", in retrospect with my little maturity I am understanding that war is a necessary evil at times. War is not pretty but heroes come out of that darkness. There are a lot more truths than what we are able to see on screens.

Its always a lot easier to revere the movies and action, its a lot harder to notice reality and history. I moved out of my family's traditional home last year. It's the place where 4 generations of my family (maybe 5 now) have grown up and lived together. Its mainly a holiday house now as many old homes become. I had the attic room for a while and there were medals and an old Army hat. I found out it was my great-grandfathers from WWII, and I started to remember that I've taken for granted that several of my family members were in the Armed services over that same time period. The hat got lost in the shuffle when I moved out and my cousin moved to NYC. She was upset since she wanted to take it with her as a touchstone. We'll find it again. As with the movies, history forgets my Uncles and forefathers. In 1934 Filipinos were drafted by the U.S. government. We were after all U.S. citizens as part of the Commonwealth not foreigners, which is why we have a long-standing history in Seattle. Of the troops from 66 countries recognized for their military service under the U.S. flag, American Filipino soldiers are the only group yet to be fully recognized. In a means to correct this with legislation over the latter part of the century Congress has denied recognition to American Filipino veterans several times since.

In my church I had a brief but interesting conversation with Gene. Remarking on his jacket's many buttoned regalia we started talking about WWII and Patton. I found out he's also part of a lesser known group: the Veterans of Underage. This is extremely remarkable as I'm sure with the fervor of patriotism and the lack of I.D. many young people could willingly just walk into a draft office. I was just excited about getting a license at 16 and getting a date for Tolo. These guys became men by choice ahead of their time through duty. Yet, its another sad fact of obscurity; What do we choose to notice in society? - whether it be political or social filtering. So in passing of Veterans Day this weekend, and in viewing of Easy Company's exploits, I'll be reality checking and considering service done by those less recognized and knowing that Armed Service is much more than glory and blood and brotherhood. Service leaves a legacy that deserves to be remembered with respect.

The Husky Football Experience

So tomorrow after living in Seattle since 1995 I will be attending my 1st Husky Football game. And dont call me a bandwagon fan. My reasoning is for 10 years, I like Ty W have coached every Saturday in the fall. I will be taking the Gosslings to the 206 with me and need to know all the rules of the road from the experienced "Dawgs"

Where does a Lodge man meet fellow Lodge mates for a Brew and a Dog in the parking lot? I need the best place for a Lodge man to Tailgate

Tips on Husky game ethics or traditions?

Rules for Pulling down the goalposts while carrying a 2 and 5 year old?

All these things are of importance to me as I raise two boys who will learn good and bad things from Jimbo as he teaches them his pearl of Wisdom...."You never forget your 1st time"

GO DAWGS!!!! (

(I'd color it Purple or Gold howver 2.0 needs to adapt his HTML post to include how to code in color)
